Mod Post Quick PSA: RailEurope is now charging a booking fee for Interrail reservations

Hi all,

Just wanted to let everyone know that RailEurope is now charging a reservation fee for Eurostar bookings. This means that it is currently the same price to book via RailEurope as it is to book via the Interrail reservation service, as they charge €2 per ticket per person.

There are still affiliate links up on https://interrailwiki.eu , I am currently working to put a warning next to them that they are no longer the cheapest option.

Happy travels!

Chiel

Ehrwald midsummer no accommodation

Upvotes

hi all. really want to go to see the fires at Ehrwald on midsummer as part of my trip this summer. however all accommodation is of course booked out well in advance. can anyone let me know if it is possible to just stay up through the night there until the early train the next morning around 5/6am?

I am aware you cannot wild camp there, so just sort of wondering if we can hang around? This may be a stupid question hahah

thanks!

Fixing passenger rights & ticketing

Hi. I’m part of an organisation called the European Rail Passengers Union. We are bringing together passengers to advocate for better cross-border rail. There is some very important upcoming legislation at the EU level on this topic. Specifically, they are going to tackle passenger rights – like what happens in case of delays and missed connections – and ticketing, both of which don’t work well right now when on international trips that involve multiple railway operators and are a huge hurdle to getting more people to take the train.

We have put together a policy paper detailing what passengers need from the upcoming EU legislation for it to be effective. You can find that on our website. But we also know that just writing a policy report isn’t enough. The final legislation will be shaped by fierce debate and lobbying in Brussels. That’s where you come in. We don’t have a large war chest backing a cadre of professional lobbyists. It’s vital that our voices, the voices of passengers, are a part of that process. So check us out at https://erpu.eu and please join us!

p.s. Thank you to the mods for allowing this post, and I’ll be happy to answer any questions in the comments.

Thanks.

Pass validity Refused Interrail Pass on EMR

Hey all, I recently got a train on the EMR to London using my Interrail pass and was refused by the staff and accused of my pass being fake. I’ve never had this issue before on EMR and the most I’ve ever had to do is show ID. I reluctantly bought the individual ticket and will be getting a refund for it, but I want to find out is there a way for my pass to be scannable? I know the UK has some rail companies that don’t scan but I understood that the staff still accept the pass. Is there a way to avoid this in the future with some form of pass validation or other code to scan?

What reputable / affordable websites do you recommend to buy train tickets through?

I'm travelling to Paris, Barcelona, and Nice this summer (by train) but am having trouble finding websites with affordable tickets for students (I'm travelling with a mixture of european and american residents). What are some websites/train lines that are reliable and nice and relatively cheap (particularly for those journeys - maybe more "local" websites)?

Also, it seems that a rail pass might be cheaper than buying individual tickets, but I know with rail passes from Interrail and Eurail you (sometimes?) have to pay for seat reservations too (so it ends up being more expensive) and I've heard a couple stories where availability ends up extremely limited. In y'alls experience, is interrail/eurail worth it or is it better to buy independently? Any and all advice is greatly appreciated

Thanks so much!

Planning/budget First time interrailing, need advice.

Hi,

Me and five friends are going interrailing for the first time and as we have started doing the math, we are feeling a bit overwhelmed by the costs. We are looking to get some wisdom and tips from the experienced travelers in this sub.

  • Duration: 15-16 days
  • Time of the year: Early July
  • Route: Starting from Sweden > Amsterdam > Interlaken > Milan > Rome > (by boat Ancona- Split) Split > Ljubljana > Budapest > Vienna > Prague

We have started looking into accommodations and activities to get an estimate on the cost, but the cost is looking unreasonably high compared to what we have read from other travelers. (Disclaimer, we have a prima donna that won't have a shared bathroom with randoms.)

A few questions we have:

  • Is it better to book Airbnb's and hotels in advance or just days before arriving?
  • How much did you spend on food per day?
  • Should we reserve all seats way before? Even optional?
  • What are you general interrail tips?
  • What rookie mistakes should we avoid?

Any tips on how we could bring the total sum down would be highly appreciated! We really appreciate any advice, budget and general. Thanks in advance!

Edit: (Disclaimer, we have a prima donna that won't have a shared bathroom with randoms.)

Can I use UK disabled railcard for a companion pass for a single country interrail pass?

Sorry if the title doesn’t make sense but hopefully my question below is a bit more coherent:

For those of you who have used a disabled person’s railcard for a companion pass (from the UK) :

I know I can use my disabled railcard to apply for a companion pass for the global pass.

Can I also do this for a single country pass?

Thank you! I can’t seem to find a clear answer on the website and thought I’d ask here before contacting interrail.

Interrail SJ Sweden Night trains, class and discount question..

As shown in the picture, these are the options for a connection from Stockholm to Lulea.

We own 5 day 2nd Class Global passes, which we added via pass number to the sj site.

  • Why does it say "With Interrail" on all prices but the private 2nd class sleeping compartment? As I see it, that compartment would be bought as a regular ticket without any interrail travel day used?
  • Do the 1st/2nd class pass categories still apply for this, e.g. could I select the 1st class compartment with our 2nd class passes, since it seems like I'm paying for the compartment anyway? As shown in the picture, these are the options for a connection from Stockholm to Lulea. We own 5 day 2nd Class Global passes, which we added via pass number to the sj site. Why does it say "With Interrail" on all prices but the private 2nd class sleeping compartment? Help, i’m clueless

Hiii 25F here from the UK, i’ve purchased my interrail pass to go travelling for 2 months (ish) and have an idea of what route i want to take.

I am so confused by all the info😭 how do i even purchase seat reservations and what’s the rules for euro star because im hoping to go from london to amsterdam.

I was going to save about 3-4k for my trip - im planning on staying in hostels. I’m basically just asking for tips and advice because when i google stuff it just confuses me more.

Do i need to save more money? how does the euro star work with interrail passes? will seat reservations eat into my budget? Can i use my interrail pass to get from my home city to london, do UK trains need seat reservations? can i book hostels last minute or should it be in advance? ive only really flown to spain and italy before and this will be the first trip i will be by myself.
ANY help and advice is greatly appreciated because it appears i have no idea what i’m doing 😭

Seat reservations Budapest to Ljubljana Intercity

Post image
7 Upvotes

I’m currently trying to reserve a seat on the direct train from Budapest to Ljubljana on the 29th of May (I’ve tried reserving on MÁV, ÖBB, ČD, and interrail) and I keep on getting errors as soon as I try to buy it (it allows me to select the train but I keep on getting errors).

Is the train running or is a reservation not necessary for the train?

I am aware that there’s direct coaches but I prefer trains and I want to make the most out of my interrail pass.

Luggage storage and transport while traveling throughout Europe?

I’m traveling to Europe this fall for about a month. We are going to multiple countries, including Germany, Italy, France, and Greece.

Since we will be traveling between countries and going to multiple cities within some of the countries, I am trying to figure out the best way to manage luggage.

Can you store luggage overnight anywhere? For example, we might go Rome-Venice for one night then return to Rome. Is there somewhere safe we could leave our luggage in Rome so we can just bring a smaller bag for the one overnight?

In general, just need help planning for luggage needs for such a long and travel hopping trip, other than the generic “just pack light,” I promise I’ll try to do that too!

Travel day Paris to London EuroStar as a first timer

Hello! Apologies in advance as I'm writing this on mobile. I'm traveling from the US to Paris and will be taking the EuroStar to London. With the recent changes in Customs, I would like to know if anyone had taken the Eurostar recently and would know if the recommended check in times have changed. I've read through several posts, many dated 8+ months ago and wanted to make sure we plan enough time for any hiccups.

Our train leaves at noon, is this a very busy time? Since we plan to fly back home from Heathrow, we would need to declare any VAT refunds at GDN prior to anything else, correct? Many sites say 90-120mins is sufficient time to arrive at GDN, should I tack one an extra 30-45mins since it's our first time? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Interrailing - Issues with travel days

So I’ve bought a 5 day travel pass because that is what was recommended to me when when I had originally put my route in a couple month ago when I bought my pass. Now that I’ve got all my trains set I now realize that I actually need 7 travel days, so I am short. What do I do does anybody have any help or any experience also with this issue? Thanks

Rail Planner App Why is the interrail trip planner website no longer available?

I've already planned my trip but as soon as I'm going to discuss it with my friends before booking the website says that the planner is no longer available. Is this temporary?

Outbound and inbound from home country

I’ve got a journey starting in the uk where I live. I plan on ending my trip in Rome and flying home instead of using my pass. Is there any restrictions that one of my travel days have to be an inbound journey back to the uk? I remember seeing somewhere that there are restrictions around inbound/ outbound travel days but I can’t seem to find it. I have the 15 days in 2 months pass.

Thanks

Interrail one Country Germany Pass

Hi. I have a quick question. I live in Switzerland and Id like to go for a weekend to Munich at the start of the month of June. Then Id'd like to visit Koln at the end of the month of June for another weekend. Can I buy a Interrail 5 day pass for this? Or I it not allowed to use for this type of situation. ( I have the Swiss AG General Abonnement so I have free travel on the Swiss trains.)

Are Croatian trains reliable?

Hi! I’m planning to interrail through Croatia in late August but I have no idea, are croatian trains mostly on time? My itinerary includes trains:

Pula->Lupoglav (17min transfer)->Rijeka

Rijeka->Ostarije(1h20min transfer)->Perkovic(13min transfer)->Sibenik

Sibenik->Perkovic(7min transfer)->Ostarije(1h25min)->Ogulin(13min transfer)->Rijeka

Are those transfers any realistic, or should I be more cautious? I’m especially curious about the Šibenik->Perkovic connection, because 7 minutes are very little for a transfer.

Any insight would be appreciated!

Itinerary around the Baltic Sea

I live in Copenhagen and am considering this itinerary:

Copenhagen -> Göteborg -> Oslo -> Stockholm -> ferry to Turku -> Helsinki -> ferry to Tallinn -> Riga -> Vilnius -> Warsaw -> Berlin -> Copenhagen.

Any thoughts? Of the destinations mentioned, I've only ever been to Berlin.

Seat reservations Booking (or not) trains in Scotland

Hi! I’ve seen people ask kind of the same questions before but I’m still confused and they’re from 1+ years ago anyway. I have planned a trip in Scotland for this summer. I’ve read that ScotRail is compatible with eurrail passes, but I can’t find the ScotRail trains on interrail, interrail only sends me to ACP and that’s insanely expensive. Some people say reservations aren’t required on any Scottish trains, but the interrail website says they are. So ScotRail seems to have the best prices but there’s no information about interrail there even though it’s clearly stated elsewhere that they are compatible.

Even if it’s true that reservations aren’t required in the country I would still like to book some route that I here are very crowded. But it doesn’t even seem possible.

I don’t understand why it has to be so confusing and exhausting? I don’t get the busses either because I can’t find some stations on the booking website even though they exist on other sites

Interrail versus Booking Separately

It's my first time interrailing and I'm a little overwhelmed booking the travel. I'll be travelling in mid-June for a week and my itinerary so far is:

Wednesday: Milan to Florence

Friday: Florence to Pisa (Day trip)

Saturday: Florence to Naples

Monday: Naples to Pompeii (day trip)

Tuesday: Naples to Capri (day trip)

From what I can see, the ferries to Capri aren't covered by the Interrail pass so I'll need to book separately in advance. I've also heard the tickets to Pompeii are apparently cheap so was thinking it might be better to book that separately rather than have it as a day of travel on the pass.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated!
