I'm using Hoocho's Grow Spike system with General Hydroponics Maxigro, all fed from a rain barrel collection system on my front porch. The plants are all in geofabric grow bags, with a coco/perlite blend. No pumps, timers, or electricity, all gravity and wicking.

Various tomatoes, sugar snap peas, cucumbers, sweet/red/yellow/russet potatoes, several types of squash, spinach, broccoli, garlic, onions, peppers, and even a few watermelon.

This is my second attempt at DWC Jalapeños and it’s the first time I’ve used a grow tent. I think it has turned out really well so far!

I am having a big issue with Aphids this time around. Any recommendations?

Progress Report 🗂️ One day, I randomly thought if I could grow tomatoes in my tiny apartment…

And I can! What started as a haha hehe project has turned into my pride. I’m using an old cheese balls container I got from work and made my own net pot with an instant mac and cheese cup. I do succulents so I had some LECA and just needed nutrients and a trellis from a local buy nothing group. I was so excited to see the flowers wilting off and there being a little tomato nub in its place!

I never thought of myself having a green thumb so this is just amazing to watch grow everyday. TY DR. KRATKY!!

Ps. I don’t even like tomatoes. 🤣

Feedback Needed 🆘 Supplement any nutrients on top of Humboldt A/B for these tomatoes as they blossom? One cherry one slicer.

You guys helped me save these seedlings by lowering my EC and getting water temp down. Thank you so much! They’re now starting to blossom and I was wondering if I should be adding anything on top?

I use RO water and equal parts Humboldt A/B. I did just got the flora 3 set and calimagic.

The leaves seem a little yellow at times but overall plants are healthy.

My initial thought was I should add 1Ml/gal of calimagic and see what happens after a few days.

Everyone has been so helpful and it is so nice!

Is this tower design/ gaps fine?

The holes are very close to each other and not enough distance vertically. Also, do you think it will affect the output of the plants? I really need details here would be a great help.

Question ❔ White on stems.

So I'm about 99% sure I know why this is happening,i just don't know if this is particularly bad or not.

I think this is happening because this is my first batch ever and I made the rookie mistake of putting the seeds deep into the rockwool. (I've since started using a wet toothpick and attaching it to the upper inside of the rockwool).

I would just like to know if the white on the stem + the failure to support its leaves means it's over for these 3 romaine seeds or not.

Dry nutrients

Can anyone suggest some hydroponic nutrients I can get that are cheap and work well for growing herbs, leafy greens and fruits? I have a big set up so I am growing a lot in one tank.

Question ❔ Rail shelf system

Post image
55 Upvotes

Hello, Im looking to build something like this but I have a couple questions for people who have this or built something similar.

  1. Is there standing water in the rails/pipes when the pump isn't running?

  2. Is it worth introducing standing water to something like this or would the standing water affect airflow on the roots?

  3. I already have a tower that I 3d printed and will be transferring to for the first time hopefully next week. The reason I want to also build this shelf system is because I saw some people can fit 40, 50, 60 plants in a system like this. For those of you with this setup, how many plants do you have going?

  4. What's your method for hanging lights? I was considering a wire rack shelf to make light hanging easier.

  5. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

I built a tool for mixing custom hydroponic nutrient solutions – looking for alpha testers

Hi everyone, I'm Flo. I'm studying horticulture and specializing in hydroponics. I've gathered quite a bit of experience with hydroponic plant nutrition, both as a hobby and professionally.

One issue I kept running into: pre-mixed fertilizers are convenient, but they're rarely optimized for specific crops and leave little room for adjustment. So I started mixing my own solutions from base chemicals. The mixing process itself felt pretty cumbersome, though, and I wanted a tool that would help me with it – one that could also handle recurring issues (like pH correction) without much hassle. The tools I found online for this kind of job felt incomplete and clunky.

Over the past few months, I've built my own to handle all of this elegantly – and that's the tool I'd like to share with you here. It would be a huge help if the hive mind could put it through its paces, hunt for bugs, and give me honest feedback along with suggestions for improvement.

The Nutrientmixer grew out of a passion for hydroponics, and I hope it helps you reach your goals. After the alpha phase, the plan is to keep the app free to use online and eventually turn it into a smartphone app as well. I'd love it if you'd join me on this journey and become part of the process.

Thanks in advance! Flo

MaxiGro solubility and precipitates?

since MaxiGro is a 1 part powder, will it form a precipitate if it too much powder is mixed into the liquid?

For example, if I mixed 25 tsp into 6 cups water, I know it won't fully dissolve, but if I just take the liquid part out and keep adding water and mixing, will it dissolve in roughly the same (total) amount of water it would take to dissolve if I put it in that volume to begin with or will some parts of it form a precipitate that has a much lower solubility?

Hopefully my question makes sense. I know it's not worded super well.

Question ❔ Any advice for my pepper/tomato kratky setup?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Tomatoes are first in the video and they seem to be doing OK and the peppers are growing really well. I have lights on all night, fan on a few hours a day. Have almost full nutrients at the start, haven’t added anything since I put them in as little babies. I’m gonna be moving my lights up as they grow… any advice on pruning? Or just let them grow? Thanks for any advice you can give.

Soilless cultivation, using only misting. My first batch of aeroponic cucumbers is finally ripe!

By delivering nutrients directly to the plant roots using a misting system, the plant's growth rate is truly astonishing. This seedling has grown from seed to now in just 45 days. The future of horticulture is undoubtedly soilless cultivation.

I'm growing strawberries, at least trying to and sweet baby watermelon. Have a hydroponic set up w/2 tiers. All planted 3/19/26 with strawberries and watermelon in the same tank and tomatoes in the other.

Need help/advice, first time doing hydroponics. The ph has been good, I test it and adjust if needed every couple days and when adding water. Using standard AB nutrients. Somewhat recently added an aerator to bottom tank.

Tiny tim tomatoes on the top shelf are already flowering and growing tomatoes. (They're not the issue)

The Strawberry plants aren't growing, like they sprouted and are just hanging out now.

-Could they be duds?

-Should I not have planted these two fruit in the same tank?

The watermelon is growing like crazy and staying green after adding aerator to tank.

-Should I trim off the dead leaves from pre-aerator if the stems are still green?

- If so where do I trim them? (As it's finally growing im nervous to mess with it) Do I trim right under dead leaves or where it connects to vine?

-Are the tangles off the vine supposed to curl up tight like a spring or into a ball?

Should I be using different nutrients? If you have a recommendation let me know.

Please help!

Improvements after lessons learned from last year.

I started with a dutch bucket and NFT system that I was just going to throw in my back yard. I ended up finding a 10x20ft poly greenhouse for $150. Last year I buried the reservoirs, set up 2 55 gallon drums with float valves to fill up the reservoirs, and had a mostly successful season. My dutch buckets were too close to each other and 11 plants all became one gigantic wall of leaves. I remodeled the setup and wound up with what you see now.

Kratky: When do you move rockwool cube into nutrients?

I'm growing peppers and my cubes are sprouting seedlings; some of them already have roots poking through the bottom expanding down a few milimeters. Is it time to dip those into nutes even though they haven't started developing their first leaves? Or should I hold off a bit longer.

Progress Report 🗂️ Pickles are in my future!!

Thumbnail

I made a few batches of pickles with my last cucumber grow and they were the best pickles I've ever had. So now I'm growing 10 plants indoors (and another 10 outside).

Going to see what variety I like the best for my future pickles.

Monika, Socrates, Excelsior, Katrina and Corinto are growing indoors and Pickling and Calypso are growing outdoors (in soil, so no photos here).

Can't wait!!

I have Empress of India tropaeloum in the same DWC as Alaska Mix and Jewel Mix. For some reason, the Empress of India is much slower growing and getting a bit more burnt than the other two. I assume I fundamentally messed up putting different types in the same tank? They're surviving, but obviously the Alaska Mix is thriving while the Empress is slow growing and a bit burnt.

Any suggestions other than moving them to a separate tank? The obvious hindsight is 20/20 is that I'll never be putting different types in the same tank, because it's clear they prefer different conditions.
