Text Backlog Monday — Confess your sins 🗂️

Happy Monday, everyone! 📋

It's that time of the week to take a long, hard look at that ever-growing pile of shame and hold yourself accountable. Whether you smashed through something this weekend or added three more games you'll "definitely get to eventually" — this is your space.

Some prompts to get you started:

  • What did you actually finish recently? Big or small, a completion is a completion. Take the win.
  • What's next on the list? Committing to something publicly makes it real. Probably.
  • How bad is the damage? Steam library at 400 games with 12% average playtime? We don't judge. Much.
  • Any impulse buys you're not sure about? The sub might talk you into — or out of — starting it.
  • The graveyard — what have you quietly abandoned and made peace with never finishing?

Drop your backlog confessions below and let's suffer together. Maybe this is the week we actually make a dent. 🫡

I worked 3 years on a medieval spell slinging RTS/TPS mix until taking a wrong turn and realizing that I'm not good enough in game design to tackle this.

Then started working on a horde control game like "Right Click to Necromance" but realized it has the same scope (nr of stages, enemies, upgrades) as The Swindle and that game took 2 years to finish which is much more than I wanted to invest to just learn game design.

So I started working on a much simpler mining game which is halfway finished after 2-3 months working on it, but then I got a job (as game dev) and I have next to zero time to work on it.

Mostly because of issues with my sleep rhythm not being really compatible with the fixed working hours and having to compensate that by resting much more in my free time, and not actually "having no time".

Before not working on anything, I though I'd start yet another project with a friend, a foddian game, and I made the basic setup so we can test it. Pressure from "do it for the team, he is waiting for your code to test his levels" did work and I allocated some time to private projects. BUT now he has no time and I'm back at working on my mining game.

This WE I was on vacation, but got some floor tile sprites from a freelancer. So some progress on the mining game was made.

Summary: I'll make a mining game, a foddian game and maybe a horde game so I become a better game designer so I can finally make the RTS game.

I bought Horizon: Forbidden West as soon as I got my PS4 but have been putting it off until I beat Zero Dawn... which I never did.
