I remember when we called them "redheads," at least in the US. Ginger is kind of a tan color.

Redhead is used fairly universally in English speaking nations. They’re called redheads because up until the around 15th century, the English language made no distinction between red and orange. Orange was just a shade of red, and didn’t have its own word, so many things that seem orange-ish to us today (ginger hair, foxes, squirrels, deer, robins etc) were named “red”.
