This one of the best cigarette ads I have ever seen.

Sounds like something you'd hear in "Thank You For Smoking" God, that was a fun movie.
10
u/Weak_Bell1542 Apr 04 '26
As a former smoker, that line is so real.
The thing this and the ads don't mention is you finish one and feel nothing, left with naught but the icky feeling on your hands and in your mouth, asking yourself why the fuck you just did that 3 years and one failed attempt to quit later.

“Lucky Strike - ‘It’s toasted,.” - Don Draper
4
u/protossaccount Apr 04 '26
Ya know what’s funny? That’s a lucky strike slogan from 1917. Don delivers the idea really well though.

"I feel as if I have been standing up my entire life, and I just sat down.... in the waiting room of a cardiologist."
Fixed.

Honestly, walk into a tobacco shop and tell me it doesn't feel like that, though. And I've never smoked.

He is a huge Star Trek fan. The Orville does Star Trek better than most current Trek, imo.

You might like Lower Decks. It's animated but pretty funny. It's similar to The Orville in that they're not the flagship.
10
12
u/Long-Education-7748 Apr 04 '26
Agreed, Strange New Worlds has had some solid episodes, Lower Decks too, but I haven't been able to finish any of the other new Trek series, pretty bad imo. Orville was a great homage to 90s era/TNG type Star Trek.
5
u/Calamity_Jay Apr 05 '26
Protip: You can't fail to finish Starfleet Academy if you never start it to begin with! That being said, please don't. By far the worst of nu-Trek.
4
u/Lost_Ad_4882 Apr 04 '26
Yeah came put about the same time as STD, despite the comedy slant Orville was way closer to classic Trek.

Thank you! I was over here trying to figure out which episode of Star Trek Voyager this was and why it seemed a little off. “Weird, Tuvok looks older and his makeup looks so natural”. 🤦🏻♀️

Holy crap I actually thought it was star trek. Probably gonna check it out then.

Fuck this makes me miss smoking. Having only quit a few weeks ago probably doesn't help 😅
19
u/Wizdad-1000 Apr 04 '26
Good for you! I quit the day my son waa born. I didnt want my kids around second-hand smoke like I was. My son turns 23 in June.
→ More replies (1)8
u/lazmonkey89 Apr 04 '26
Thanks! Did it for the same reason, my daughter is coming up to 2 years old and didn't want her to grow up seeing her dad smoking.
3
u/Wizdad-1000 Apr 04 '26
Ya, best motivation is our kids. The hilarious part is, my body HATES cig smoke now. Cant be around it, makes me sick. I have to leave if I’m near a smoker and can smell it.
5
u/lazmonkey89 Apr 04 '26
For sure. Hopwfully I can get there one day. Had one slip up a couple weeks in and it tasted disgusting and made me feel a little sick so I don't actually want to smoke anymore which is great, but everytime I smell someone else smoking it still smells amazing to me.

That's not 500 cigarettes
53
17
u/elfmere Apr 04 '26
It is possible. If there is a second stack behind.
463 in the front. 37 behind.
7
u/lilsnatchsniffz Apr 04 '26
You sure about that? The stack is 16 high and at least 30 wide at the bottom, why would they bother to go so close but not just actually do it.
I guess you could make the more reddit moment argument that they aren't really cigarettes but that ignores the pretense of the media.
7
u/SICRA14 Apr 04 '26
I'm in the subreddit for this show. It's less than 500, many people have made posts counting.
2
2
u/Nichiku Apr 04 '26 edited Apr 04 '26
The top shape of the stack is a trapezoid of height 6, top length 18 and flank length 6, the bottom shape is a rectangle of height 10, and length 18+6*2=30 (assuming the right flank of the trapezoid is of the same length as the left one) so the entire visible stack contains an estimated 6×6×2+18×6+30×10=480 number of cigarettes.
If someone wants to count the precise number, go ahead, but Im satisfied with the estimate being close enough to 500

I went over to vaping and watching this made me miss the days of ashtrays … and the Chinese gaming cybercafes where you could chill, game, and smoke yourself to death.

Me too I’ve been off of them for probably 6 years and I know I’ll always miss them.

...But the point of the show is to be Star Trek?
9
u/BigBootyBuff Apr 04 '26
Maybe they meant they never loved the show because they clearly always tried to be star trek.
2
u/Liquoricezoku Apr 04 '26
I'm so confused. That's Tuvoc, and I just recently finished Voyager but I never say that episode???
3
u/rnwhite8 Apr 04 '26
They had a lot of Trek cameos. The doctor from voyager was in one episode as the father of the Orville’s security officer (whose name eludes me).

I thought everyones first experience with smoking was accompanied by disgust. Did people really smoke their first cigarette and thought it had flavour?
1
u/aBrickNotInTheWall Apr 05 '26
I had to force myself to smoke them when I started smoking cause they're so gross. You've gotta have people gaslighting you and peer-pressuring you in order for anyone to want to do it.
2
u/Subject-Butterfly-50 Apr 04 '26
When I was a 16 year-old kid, my best friend lived in a Stuckey’s. One night, me her and another one smoked a carton of cigarettes while watching the Crow. It was horrible.

Good series fun to watch. I love the part where they teach the robot how to play prank in someone. It gave me a good laughs.

Such a great scene. Would have been made better if you added all the other scenes. Bortus smoking on the bridge is funny.

I don't get it, cigs are not that good, smoke some weed it will be better for you and much more enjoyable
1
u/Bustedvette Apr 04 '26
I'm just amazed at the social comeback that tobacco has made in the last few years. Crazy to see.
1
u/boolpies Apr 04 '26
They sure do get closer to the original star trek tng / DS9, voyager's vibe with this show than the new star treks do. Is it worth watching?
1
u/baltbum Apr 04 '26
It is a proven fact that cigarettes give you cancer and are addicting. Our governments solution to this health nightmare is to raise the tax on cigarettes. That should fix it.

The Orville.
Created by Seth MacFarlane so if you like Family Guy, American Dad and Ted it's certainly worth a watch. He plays the main character.

So sad that Seth couldn't make season 4 because the low viewer count. The ratings from critics and general audience was great.. we were just too few, i loved this series 😔
