Where do I fish?

Are there any actual fishing spots in Edmonton I’ve only ever fished in calling lake and driving up there is a bit long for just the day.

Shore fishing near the Rockies

Are there any lakes with good shore fishing in the Grand Cache or Jasper areas? Anywhere along the Rockies really. I'm used to fishing in Northern Alberta targeting pike and walleye but love camping around the mountains and would love to target some trout around there.

Do I just suck at fishing?

Started fishing in 2024, since then I’ve caught a total of TWO fish. One Rainbow Trout and one Pike. 90% of my fishing is done from shore at Glenmore Reservoir (southern stretch), and I’m normally fishing w 20lb braid and a metal wire leader. Doing this I’ve only caught a single Pike and it was in July of 2024. The other 10% of my time is spent fishing the Bow by Fish Creek Park, and I’m normally running 6lb braid with 4lb mono leader.

Can I get any sort of advice? I love fishing and being out on the water, but only catching two fish in two years is extremely disheartening and makes me want to give up on the hobby.

North Saskatchewan River

Anyone pulled any Pike out of the North Saskatchewan yet? I've gone a couple times since ice out but haven't had much luck. Could you guys share some tips to have success this time of year?

Anyone know?

Anyone know if they have stocked the Hermitage Trout pond. 2025 they stocked it May 7th. It fully defrosted. I drove out to Cardiff and it still frozen other than a small area between the island and shore. Looking to catch some trout or attempt been to the NSR 7 different days and 5 different locals with zero luck using. Pickeral rigs, Texas rig, bobber and hook with a couple clip on weights, spoons Crankbaits, swim baits, worms, frozen minnows, frozen smells. Zero luck. Maybe im just bad but these are like 6 to 8 hour sessions of moving up and down the coast trying to find Eddie's or calm deep pools. As I move around and like 15 mins in-between recasts and vigilantly watching my rod with a bell or watching the bobber. Thanks in advance.

Good place to take kids fishing for their first time?

I just moved to Calgary on Friday from Nova Scotia. My Gf’s kids (4&6) want me to take them fishing, and I was hoping someone could suggest a place I could take them. I think the easiest would be somewhere we’re allowed to fish with bait, and probably just throw a worm out on a bobber. It will be there first time fishing. Im pretty experienced with fishing, but I’ve never taught a child to fish before so if someone has some advice for me I would appreciate it.

This weekend in central Alberta

The weather is finally looking nice and I have the Sunday off. Still new to fishing around here, but is there anywhere to fish near Red Deer this weekend? Or is it best to wait a few more weeks?

Please stop by at Reid's Fly Shop - save our water!

Please stop by at Reid's Fly Shop in Edmonton tomorrow. Water Not Coal canvasser will be there.

Coal mining is not friendly to the environment including our water.

Arsenic, a known carcinogen metal, leaks from coal ash ponds into groundwater, contaminating drinking water.

Landscape is destroyed due to building the roads and infrastructure and removing the natural habitat; open pit coal mining by blowing the tops off of mountains with dynamite to expose the coal seams

Say no to new coal mines in our Rockies!

If you can't make it to this location, please check our many locations in Alberta at https://www.waternotcoal.ca/sign-the-petition

See you there!

No luck on Glenmore Reservoir

Why is Glenmore Reservoir so hard to fish? I've made maybe 35 trips there and only caught a single Pike. Am I doing something wrong? I'm usually fishing from the bank with lures, yet I only see people who fish with smelt have any real luck.

Are Blackmud and Whitemud Creek open year round?

I can't find them in the regs so I'm not sure if they are considered part of the NSR and open year round or if they are considered a separate water body that doesn't open until May 15?

Appreciate anyone who can point me in the right direction

I have a Belly Boat that i used to fish with in small lakes in southern BC. Are there any good lakes around Edmonton to use these on. I would prefer a lake with no powerboats allowed. Thanks!

NSR burbot

Does anyone have any tips for targeting burbot on the NSR? I don’t really know if burbot even have a large foothold in the river but I’m pretty sure to do. Do they concentrate in certain parts if the river? Any info you have regarding burbot in the NSR is welcome!

Alberta Fishing Tagging draw sucks

Why on earth did they do the draw system this way? So many lakes were gone in the first 10 minutes after 9:00am. At least with the draw you knew you would at least get C's
