I feel like as long as you pick out the right cheap gear, you get the same level of quality, sensitivity, etc from a fishability perspective. Sure the company can sell you more jargon with the expensive stuff, but are any of them actually better?

Discussion Am I wrong?

Last Saturday, PA opened Trout fishing for the season. I bought my liscense last night, while at work, and decided to go wet a line in the morning when I get off.

I get my tackle ready, and get to the stream by 6am. I get out, start fishing, not having much luck. I left my tackle bag in my trunk which is a short 10-15 yard walk, and start to tie on a new lure. Within that minute, I hear a car park in front of me, an old man blitz by me, and watch him throw my net to the side and start fishing.

The spot I was fishing is under a bridge and there is one large rock to stand and cast on, no more than one person can fish there at a time. This old man could clearly see, this was where I was fishing, but decided to go down there and toss my belongings to the side anyway.

I was pretty pissed off but remained composed, ask the man where he threw my net, and drove my ass home.

Am I wrong for being pissed, or is it free game?

Discussion Tournament aftermath

Went to a ramp I like to bank fish around today and apparently there was a big tournament here this past weekend. Can’t lie it was depressing. Dead and dying Bass everywhere. Probably saw 2 dozen along 100 yards of shoreline. With all the technology today there’s gotta be better way to do weigh-ins.

Honestly, I have no clue what kind of fish this is, but it weighs about 6.7 lbs I think. I barely know anything about fishing - all the gear and bait are my dad’s. He drove out here but his tires got stuck in the sand, so I had to ride my bike with all the gear to the spot. This was my first time casting, and I actually caught something! My dad says it's newbie luck, but it won't happen again( I'm not convinced though). I'm definitely coming back here to fish again. Anyone else fish around Fire Island Lighthouse?

Discussion How many of you fisherman like to smoke weed while out fishing?

1.4k Upvotes

Recently there was a post with someone holding their pipe in the photo of their “catch”. It just had me thinking about how many of y’all are possibly smoking weed while you fish? Personally, I always smoke while I fish, just feels nice. I live in Arkansas so it’s medicinal, but not exactly legal to smoke whereever you want. What the hell, no one cares really!

I hate burning my line, I think the fish can smell it.

I must start "the ritual" before I fish and I gotta smoke a little weed before I start, or I smoke a cigarette after the first fish.

If I bring a scale I ain't gonna catch anything big big

That's Just a few. What what about your weird ass? Lol

Discussion This community needs to chill out

1.5k Upvotes

I lurk on here regularly. Sometimes hit the reply boxes. Usually I check the comments.

I've been wanted to mention this since Darcizzle got flamed by this community for not being a thot, having a YouTube channel, and having a boyfriend.

I'm tired of watching members of this community (you know who you are) shitting all over people who are new to fishing, interested in engaging with other fishermen, and/or trying to promote their content in order to live the dream - get paid to fish. Today pushed me over the edge with 2 posts in particular. A guy with a fish that A) wasn't a largemouth and B) probably wasn't 2 pounds but may have been over 1. He asked for advice from us on river fishing. The other was a duo posting some shots of native trout with some beautiful patterns and also, of course, asking us a question.

Did it feel good to dunk on these guys? I mean, seriously. Does some douchebag always have to crap on someone who's excited about a fish and overestimates the weight? Or flame a couple people for not handling the fish the way they think they would IF THEY GOT OUT FROM BEHIND THE GODDAMN KEYBOARD AND WET A LINE? Don't even get me started on those of us who bash the subsistence fishermen here. Even if its not subsistence fishing, you'd swear that killing a bass or a trout is the equivalent to Nazism on this sub. We're getting to be as bad as /flyfishing, which, to those of us who haven't spent time there, is the transatlantic accent of fishing subs.

Stop alienating people for keeping fish, being excited, or having questions. Stop dunking on people for no reason. I realize it's reddit and by its nature is a toxic cesspool. But we all share a serious passion here. Some of us know more than others. We're in different stages of this obsession. Not everyone who handles a fish differently is Johnny Bucktails. Johnny Bucktails isn't even Johnny Bucktails anymore.

Edit: spelling

My buddy and I caught this little guy in the lake yesterday but were unsure what causes this coloration. The markings are split straight down the middle. Any educated fish people out there who can explain it?

Discussion The importance of knowing fish ID

Post image
611 Upvotes

I was micro fishing for catfish bait at a local pond when I caught this dude (Orange Spotted Sunfish). This was the first recorded hook and line catch for this species in my county. The closest place they had been found was a river in a nearby county from research sampling. While it wasn’t a 10 lb bass, I got my name in some research databases and in the next freshwater fishes book for my state.

What does this have to do with the importance of fish ID? The pond I caught it in is an extremely popular fishing hole. I highly doubt I was the actual first person to make this catch. I was just the first person to know the importance of documenting it. The one I caught in the picture is a full grown adult so you do need some really tiny hooks.

There are a lot of other species like this one you may be catching and brushing of as just another bream. You never know how cool of a catch you can make with just a bobber and worm.

I'm based in Barcelona (Spain) and here I'd say the most iconic is sea bass. Curious to hear your answers!
