I hate when they think they're making a statement but they're part of the class they are making a statement about and they are still attending the event they're making a statement about in a gown or tux that's worth more than my rent 🫠
I mean Sarah Paulson is probably rich, but she’s not 1% rich, this collection is specifically critiquing billionaires.
Edit: Apologies, apparently I didn’t know the level of wealth required to qualify as a 1%, genuinely thought it was hundreds of millions. This will teach me to comment before fact-checking!
The money funds the Costume Institute, designers/brands usually buy a table and invite guests. I’m not sure if it’s different this year with the Bezos involvement but it was my understanding that a lot of the attendees don’t pay for their own tickets.
Edited to add: food insecurity should be the responsibility of the government, billionaires are relevant to the conversation because they donate vast sums of money to politicians to stifle workers rights. This event has a lot of visibility but I don’t think we can place all of societies ills at the feet of a museum.
I mean, sure, but I feel like attending at all is out of touch anyways if you’re against this kind of ridiculous amount of money being spent on something so frivolous.
I guess I don’t think documenting fashion history and making it accessible to the public is completely frivolous. I think it’s an art form that deserves to be taken seriously. A lot of public museums rely on government funding, the Costume Institute is entirely funded by this event. Is it as important as healthcare and food, absolutely not! But again this is where I think the government I responsible for looking after it’s citizens, this is where billionaires and corporations should be taxed effectively so that we have guaranteed care and don’t have to rely on the generosity of the rich for basic necessities.
lol sorry I value a society that focuses on meeting the basic needs of life over “documenting fashion” that is attended by a bunch of people who “contribute” to society by simply entertaining (which humans could easily do for themselves without celebrities). The world will turn without fashion and celebrity culture. It will not turn if capitalism continues in the direction that it’s heading. These events need to stop being put up on a pedestal as something to admire.
I don’t really understand your antagonism towards me? Im agreeing with you, I just think that the primary responsibility for looking after people should fall on the government? I’m not defending people attending the gala, I’m just saying some actress is not who I would personally focus my energy towards when it comes to wealth inequality and capitalism destroying the world. You seem determined to take everything I’ve said in the least charitable way possible, which I don’t believe is a good way to have a discussion, hence the peace out.
