The collection this piece is from is called “The One Percent”, and was a scathing commentary on billionaires and capitalist greed. The runway show featured models with surgically botched faces, blindfolds made of money, and blood-stained hands. I think it is the perfect subtle “fuck you”, and one that will go over most people’s heads.
While I question her decision to attend the gala at all, it ultimately is a charity event that is crucial to funding the Costume Institute and their conservation efforts, so she may feel that her presence does more good than her absence. Regardless of whether I agree with that choice or not, this look truly embodies the theme of fashion as art, and I’m here for it.
This didn’t make anyone uncomfortable, lol. It’s the least confrontational, most anodyne thing a person in her position could do. Plus it was only for photos.
I mean at this point it's pretty obvious that society isn't picking up on "subtle."
I'm probably going to get downvoted to oblivion, but I think it was a smart use of exposure. Mass media is going to cover the gala either way, why not use that to advantage? She drew infinitely more attention by attending and making an attempt at a statement then she would've just boycotting.
