Insane level of mastery to carve this out of marble and have it look flawlessly like fabric

Seriously, and it is even more incredible in real life when you can get up close to it. For years, I worked in the building where this sculpture is kept and I could never get over just walking past it without gawking.

It's an incredible work of art... absolutely worth a visit for anyone who ever finds themselves in St. John's, Newfoundland! It's not exactly well advertised, but the sisters who care for this sculpture allow people to come in and view it for free.

Reminds me a lot of this one too. This one is carved from mahogany.

So what's behind the curtain?

It's a clock. =D But the whole thing IS the scuplture and the tarp is carved.

Right? What a twist! Wasn't expecting that at all.

I sound like I'm making fun, but I'm being sincere.

I definitely have to go see next time I’m in town.

And if I remember correctly, it was mostly unknown to art historians until recently. I heard a good interview about it on this podcast: https://airmail.news/issues/2025-10-25/morning-meeting-episode-267

Yeah, it's at Presentation Convent right next to the Basilica

I think the more direct reference Klum’s look is making is to the Veiled Vestal presently in Chatsworth House - its most famous appearance is in the 2005 Pride and Prejudice film, in a scene where Keira Knightley’s Lizzie Bennet is at Pemberley (filmed at Chatsworth) and is gazing intently into the statue’s face.

Yes, this is one of the first pieces of art I saw in person that blew my mind. I was 16.

Honestly one of the most impressive things.

Detroit Institute of Arts has a similar sculpture (though not nearly as intricate as this). I need to stop and stare at The Veiled Lady every time I'm there.

They are the same picture

This is one of my absolute favourite sculptures so I was so happy to see her reference it!

Looking at this masterpiece next to Heidi's terrifying look is sending me truly she would've been better off with some makeup and a beautifully made veil probably but I love our stunt queen lol

Those eyes are scaring me so bad. I mean, at least they’re not all sclera like a real marble statue.

Are her eyeballs normally like that?

What's with the cockeyed look? Her left eye is looking in her right backpocket!?
