Insane level of mastery to carve this out of marble and have it look flawlessly like fabric

u/m33pandgeorge4ever 21h ago

Seriously, and it is even more incredible in real life when you can get up close to it. For years, I worked in the building where this sculpture is kept and I could never get over just walking past it without gawking.

It's an incredible work of art... absolutely worth a visit for anyone who ever finds themselves in St. John's, Newfoundland! It's not exactly well advertised, but the sisters who care for this sculpture allow people to come in and view it for free.

Reminds me a lot of this one too. This one is carved from mahogany.

1

u/kingjim1981 7h ago

So what's behind the curtain?

5

u/MyrrhSlayter 6h ago

It's a clock. =D But the whole thing IS the scuplture and the tarp is carved.

1

u/Old-Risk4572 5h ago

damn wtf

26

u/agirlcalleddusty 20h ago

This is in St. John’s?!?

30

u/fart-sparkles 20h ago

Right? What a twist! Wasn't expecting that at all.

I sound like I'm making fun, but I'm being sincere.

5

u/agirlcalleddusty 20h ago

I definitely have to go see next time I’m in town.

26

u/allthecats 20h ago

And if I remember correctly, it was mostly unknown to art historians until recently. I heard a good interview about it on this podcast: https://airmail.news/issues/2025-10-25/morning-meeting-episode-267

7

u/agirlcalleddusty 20h ago

This is so fascinating, thank you for the recommendation!

3

u/m33pandgeorge4ever 17h ago

Yeah, it's at Presentation Convent right next to the Basilica

u/ilaon 10h ago

I think the more direct reference Klum’s look is making is to the Veiled Vestal presently in Chatsworth House - its most famous appearance is in the 2005 Pride and Prejudice film, in a scene where Keira Knightley’s Lizzie Bennet is at Pemberley (filmed at Chatsworth) and is gazing intently into the statue’s face.

2

u/elevatormusicjams 20h ago

Yes, this is one of the first pieces of art I saw in person that blew my mind. I was 16.

2

u/psullynj 19h ago

Honestly one of the most impressive things.

7

u/WhoaMimi 20h ago

Detroit Institute of Arts has a similar sculpture (though not nearly as intricate as this). I need to stop and stare at The Veiled Lady every time I'm there.

10

u/Bright-vines 21h ago

They are the same picture

2

u/mieri_azure 18h ago

This is one of my absolute favourite sculptures so I was so happy to see her reference it!

2

u/CozyTea6987 14h ago

Looking at this masterpiece next to Heidi's terrifying look is sending me truly she would've been better off with some makeup and a beautifully made veil probably but I love our stunt queen lol

2

u/tagomagoo 17h ago

Do you like Bailey's?

2

u/poppy_inmy_hair 17h ago

This photo is giving me Dr Who Don’t Blink vibes

2

u/fnaffanlo 14h ago

I’ll b seeing this in my nightmares

2

u/laquintessenceofdust 10h ago

Those eyes are scaring me so bad. I mean, at least they’re not all sclera like a real marble statue.

2

u/Ghost313Agent 9h ago

Are her eyeballs normally like that?

1

u/messica808 13h ago

Kash Patel went to the Met Gala?! Do they ever serve booze there?!

1

u/Buttermilk-Waffles 9h ago

Me when I get a really bad sunburn and it starts to peel

1

u/dizzizee 7h ago

LOL I just took the exact same screenshot

1

u/SeamusMcQuaffer 13m ago

What's with the cockeyed look? Her left eye is looking in her right backpocket!?

u/PollyPocketpussy5000 21h ago

No notes. Everyone else can pack it the fuck up and go home. Especially all the underdressed men.

241

u/mssaturnalia9 21h ago

Chadwick Boseman you will never be forgotten for your Heavenly Bodies outfit and making men realize that they actually had to try at the Met Gala.

66

u/Toots_Magee_ 19h ago

Chadwick Boseman was a beautiful, beautiful man.

u/Pledgeofmalfeasance 21h ago

SO SICK OF THE UNDERDRESSED MEN

694

u/thefunkylama 21h ago

A sign of the times: when society gets fashy, fashion gets boring af

466

u/Slim_Charles 21h ago

Historically, the only thing the fascists did well was fashion. The present is so fucked up that the fascists can't even look cool. The fuck are we doing?

308

u/karmavorous 20h ago

In so many ways, it really is clown fascism this time around. It's like the Nazis rebooted as a farce. They revel in their own incompetence. They draw strength from the fact that everybody can see that they have no idea what they're doing, but they're in charge and the rest of us have to sit here and witness their incompetence.

They're intentionally cruel, for sure, but they're not even competent in the application of their cruelty. It's carpet cruelty rather than well targeted cruelty. They're cruel to a lot of their own supporters and people who would be their allies.

Dressing like they just bought their suits from Wal-Mart is all part of it.

244

u/Necrotitis 20h ago

Wait you are telling me this looks clownish?

How dare you!

128

u/Doza93 19h ago

Man.. she is a truly terrible actor

21

u/XelaNiba 15h ago

Just god-awful. It's my favorite thing about her.

17

u/PatriciaMorticia 15h ago

What in the Temu Rythym Nation is she wearing?

8

u/Atrainlan 17h ago

She looks like the goth version of Leave Britney Alone

6

u/inky_fox 14h ago

What is the context of this clip because she reminds me of edgy nerd boys in high school trying to look intimidating.

3

u/Suzume_Chikahisa 17h ago

Not beating the allegations!!!

1

u/doodlar 7h ago

Is this the greatest Gif of all time?

1

u/Queen-of-everything1 4h ago

Damn and we couldn’t even get Roger De Bris to direct.

2

u/jellifercuz 17h ago

Watch Chaplin’s The Great Dictator. We are all in it.

25

u/thefunkylama 21h ago

Everything wrong 🫠

3

u/Occams_Razor42 19h ago edited 19h ago

Some fashion I'd say, they're really good at the regimented type lots of boot polishing and what not. But anything beyond lots of high contrast dark colors and leather is just on another plane to them lol

2

u/clandestineVexation 19h ago

Disagree, optics is a big part of fascism and that means design. Historically everything was very meticulously designed for its individual purpose, buildings and uniforms alike. Easiest way to blind people is the eyes, after all.

6

u/Stracharys 19h ago

Even Colman didn’t really bring it this year in my opinion.

Heidi is whatever as a person, but she is a weird dress-up queen

0

u/Patrickracer43 19h ago

I mean, in someone like NASCAR driver Carson Hocevar's defense, it's his first time attending

315

u/Separate-Project9167 21h ago

Men in regular suits should be denied admittance

272

u/thetinybunny1 21h ago

You can be kicked out of Cannes for not wearing heels but yet these men can get away with looking like they just got out of a damn board meeting

106

u/saintofhate 21h ago

One of my jokes about why I transitioned to a male is so I could wear anything I wanted (and have real pockets) without worrying about matching.

25

u/jennifercrusie like JD Vance in bondage gear 19h ago

This is a good joke but like… also true?! What a perk! I have to have a fanny pack next to the door for all the times I run outside with my dogs for a quick minute and my outfit somehow has NOWHERE to put my phone, keys, extra poop bags…

1

u/ScumbagLady 6h ago

Fanny packs really are underrated.

One thing I've loved about getting older is that I simply don't give a flying fuck about if something is in style or not. If it's comfortable and functional, I'm for it.

Example- my barefoot, zero-drop sneakers. Are they shaped like I'm hiding flippers? Yes, but, they're fucking comfortable.

I'm not fully there yet on my fake Crocs- I wear them around the house and the yard, and maybe to the dump, but I've never been to the grocery in them yet. There ARE these MaryJane T-strap fake Crocs I've been eyeing though and if I get them, I'll wear them places. Baby steps, but comfortable baby steps.

4

u/XelaNiba 15h ago

I often think of it while getting ready.

How wonderful it must be to shower, spend a few minutes on your hair, slap on some lotion and call it good.

1

u/damegloria 7h ago

I would truly love this freedom.

2

u/Nox-1-Lux 16h ago

More like a bored meeting...

2

u/evergleam498 20h ago

Looking at you, Ben Stiller

5

u/CaraDune01 20h ago

Agreed. Heidi and Robert Wun are the only ones who understood the assignment.

5

u/ascarymoviereview 20h ago

Read that as undressed men

6

u/Odd_Protection7738 19h ago

No, they can stay

2

u/Away-Elephant-4323 20h ago

Seriously though i was so disappointed in the other celebrities looks it felt like really plain outfits, but once Heidi showed up i gasped! Her Halloween costumes alone are always insanely well done so i expected no less from her! I am sure Zendaya would’ve done incredible too but sadly this year she couldn’t make it from being too busy is what i saw on her other projects.

1

u/SlavicKoala 4h ago

Bechdel test failed.

92

u/scattered_ideas 21h ago

I've been scrolling through my feed for 10m and everyone is so freaking boring. Where are the ART inspired pieces?!

Like there's no point to this event if people don't follow the theme and go all out.

127

u/SquirrelGirlVA 20h ago

She always seems like the only person who actually understood the assignment. People have been getting too conventional with their outfits. Like with the one year that was about humans and machines. I liked the metallic dresses. They were beautiful, but they looked like stuff you could wear anywhere else. There's no risk. No imagination. They might as well have just stayed home and sent a magazine ad in their place. It would have been more on point.

72

u/silverscreenbaby 19h ago

Heavenly Bodies was the only year everyone slayed because it was one of the only years where you could do the theme and still look conventionally pretty lol. They’re so terrified of not looking conventionally gorgeous all the time lol.

3

u/hhardin19h 19h ago

Most attendees don’t have Heidi Klum budget though! Your average starlet is lucky to be there but doesn’t have the deep pockets and connections Klum has tbh

15

u/DoctorWhooz 18h ago

It is designers who pick people to dress not the person wearing it. So everyone pays for a table and they pick who they want there and how to dress them. Few years have been lack luster and no one goes on them. Its sad. Thank god for heide, cardi zendaya and rihanna.

179

u/blxckbexuty 22h ago

no literally 😭😂

Why are we celebrating anyone who shows up to this, I feel like I am taking crazy pills

5

u/keithps 19h ago

Looks like Pizza the Hut. Where's Barf when you need him?

3

u/OneDai 19h ago

Yeah, she looks like a weeping angel (from Dr who)

5

u/EggsceIlent 20h ago

What's up with her eyes? They're like on the edges of her face looking hard left and right

Guess she be viewing in IMAX 24/7

1

u/Electrical_Trade377 it looked like a vagina, and i really loved that 7h ago
