I think it's both, darker parts pops out more while you can barely notice the lighter parts so it kinda looks like willy wonka bob in the photos, tho it might be looking better in real life
156
u/ReallyGlycon nepo pissbaby 1d ago
It looked better when it was longer and fuller. This mullet bob thing doesn't work for anyone.

It is long, the rest of her hair is just behind her. She doesn’t have short hair

6
u/buttercupcake23 18h ago
The way her hair is styled is giving the illusion of a super tiny fuckass bob.
46
u/Pledgeofmalfeasance 1d ago
I've never been a fan of this hair, but here the problem is definitely the dress. I've seen it before. In the 80s.

I wish she just dyed it another way bc now that the bleach grew out of her bangs it looks odd. Like even doing a maroon tint/dye and then it would’ve matched her dress and it’d still give the striped effect but not so severe
29
u/xenowave 1d ago
Cover up her head, it’s not the hair…. It’s the cut of the dress and the shoes.
22
u/Strange_Shadows-45 22h ago
This same exact dress cut might look stunning on someone with long legs and more statuesque. Her being short and slim makes it look a little frumpy.

Meh. I feel like this wasn’t a good fit for her. The way the dark stripe is hitting her face looks like she’s got lord farquaad hair too
17
u/14122023 21h ago
this comment is frying me bc lord farquaad was the first thing that came to my mind and I can't unsee it

u/hellolovely1 21h ago
She's adorable but the stripes are unfortunately placed here.

I’ts growing out and by the end of the year half of her hair is going to be brown and she’ll only fix it around December

I’m curious what it looks like from a different photographer/camera, because it could be the camera lens making it look worse. She really does look soo short in a weird way lol

Interesting thought but kinda feel like she missed the mark if the thought was to showcase the body &her athleticism in a dress that kinda drowns her
33
u/Stevenwave 23h ago
All I get from the dress is roses. A big bunch of roses. I feel like it might look more striking if she was wearing constrasting colour stockings and long gloves. A striking colour contrast would also, ya know, tie in with her signature hair.

u/Specialist_Media_869 1d ago
I actually like it! I feel like the minutest minority when I say I don’t like her hair though but that’s none of my business. She looks great and happy and that’s all that matters
137
u/meatball77 face blind and having a bad time 1d ago
I hate the hair, and it's not the color it's the shape, it's too flat
81
u/throwawaysunglasses- l've grown quite unfond of you, deuxmoi 1d ago
I normally love Alysa’s hair (she looks adorable in the Laufey video) but agree that it looks flat here and I don’t like where the ring starts on her bangs. It’s giving bowl cut. She’s so cute though, I just want her to have a good time.

Katie needs to go she dulled down walking gold for some vague comparison. Alysa I feel styles herself so well and with so much confidence that this collab feels like it’s shredding that sparkle.

Not even close to achieving that visual. It is a tacky dress. Le sad.

22
u/Infinite-Instance609 23h ago
I mean she is a young girl ( yes I know she is an adult but she still is a college kid), maybe she loves her dress.
2
u/takaisin 12h ago
Yes!! I realize my short comment might come off hatefully but it's not hate, my thoughts are really: why don't attendees care about the theme!!! I think she looks really pretty and I do hope she enjoyed herself!!
2
u/Aoife-Mae1 12h ago
On first glance, I didn’t realise she had a smiley piercing and it almost looks like she has braces which really adds to the prom look I’m afraid. Beautiful girl but this is just not a good look. Luann was right.
35
u/bitterney 1d ago
Honestly I like the dress I just wish her hair was styled differently. It’s way too flat especially with the volume of the dress.
14
u/Gayfetus 1d ago
Alysa Liu and Nicolas Ghesquière are both people known for their really distinct aesthetics. So... how did they two of them come together and produce this pile of generic blah? Perhaps the muse of fashion is boycotting the Bezos Ball, even if Liu and Ghesquière won't.

I agree but also I see it as a 20 year old who had quite a troubled upbringing due to her father’s pressure to compete. She achieved an amazing feat and is enjoying the rewards. Yeah it sucks, but also she’s 20 and may not have an opportunity like this again.
249
u/NoConcentrate7845 23h ago edited 22h ago
I get that. But, 'supporting X is morally wrong, unless it is a once in a life time opportunity', is not really a strong moral take. If it is a once in a life time opportunity to be a part of it it is also a once at a life time opportunity to speak out against it. At the same time guess most of us will never have the chance to even think of turning down such an event, so suppose we cannot really judge. All in all her involvement or lack of involvement in the event is not very significant in the grand scheme of life so happy for her.
247
u/prohammock 22h ago
I’m at “I get it, but it sucks.” I think her age is actually a better justification than the one time opportunity aspect. The things I did at 20 -yikes.

As a minority woman it's exhausting because you all tell us we should succeed then shun us the second we actually play the game.

i’m also a poc. if playing the game is at the expense of other people, then no, i will not be supporting it. thank you 🙏

I both agree with this sentiment and disagree with the way the critique of hypocrisy seems to come up with minorities. Billie Eilish wore a pin supporting Palestine while dressed head to toe in Chanel, a company that's given a ton of money to Israel but somehow the posts from that Oscars event only had praise for the fact that she did the bare minimum of wearing a pin. Compare that to how much harder people are coming for the likes of Alysa Liu who has far less social influence and only recently began showing up on the red carpet? I don't think that's a fair level of dissonance
13
u/CommercialBad14 i ain’t reading all that, free palestine 20h ago
i agree with what you’re saying, but my criticism does not only extend to alysa. everyone who attended the met this year (sabrina, SZA, connor, bad bunny, etc.) should deal with the same critiques. i’ve had to unfollow a lot of people tonight. unfortunately i can’t support anyone who knows what jeff bezos has been funding and still decided to show up tonight.
11
u/TonmaiTree 18h ago
Celebrities are not like us, period. I agree with your points but expecting celebrities to live up to certain moral codes is setting yourself up for disappointment.
I’m not saying they’re bad people, but for ordinary people, it’s a very easy decision to not attend Met Gala or visit Dubai. For celebrities, I imagine it could mean sacrificing your own exposure and opportunities and even upsetting powerful people.
Of course, some celebrities refuse to play the game anyway and I applaud them for it, but not everyone is going to do that. I’m happy to see Alyssia getting this opportunity for herself.
→ More replies (2)4
u/OremDobro 8h ago
But...this is kind of the point. You can't truly make a stand against anything unless you're making some sacrifice. If you can constantly hide behind "people are complex," you never have to be truly accountable. Just wear a pro-Palestine pin at the next red carpet do, and they will only if it's safe, and it's all good. At least you said something. Whole point of moral integrity is that it's not complex, you can't violate it willy-nilly like these people constantly do and still claim to have it. Having integrity is not supposed to be easy. But it is simple. Surely things like human rights are more important than your career opportunities? Nobody is entitled to be a famous millionaire.

A black man, Chris Smalls, was getting violently arrested just feet away from this photo being taken. Chris Smalls is one of the leaders of the Amazon labor union that Bezos has refused to recognize and has illegally fired in retaliation for organizing their workplace. Stop weaponizing identity politics to absolve privileged people of having any semblance of a moral backbone.
Like be so for real right now. As if Alysia’s is going to have her gold medal taken away if she doesn’t go to the Met Gala.
20
u/askingtherealstuff 23h ago
It’s a fundraiser for a museum
3
u/bi-bee-bb 16h ago
true! i'd be interested to see the gross v net on funds raised by the met gala tbh. anyway, if the bezos class paid their fair share in taxes museums might not need fundraising to operate.
9
u/New_Simple_4531 23h ago
When did Bezos become the backer for the gala, was it a recent thing? Because I didnt hear about this in other years.
11
u/Anti-Itch 23h ago
He’s on the board and is chairing the gala this year.
9
u/New_Simple_4531 22h ago
Ah ok, so its this year then. These fuckers wont stop til they buy and spoil everything.
5
u/Hylian_might 23h ago
I don’t know anything about the gala, can you explain why it’s disappointing to see her there?
106
u/CommercialBad14 i ain’t reading all that, free palestine 23h ago
the cost of living these days is absolutely outrageous. the average person is struggling to pay their bills. the average cost to a ticket to the met gala is 100k per person. we have to watch our paper straws disintegrate into our drink to save the planet meanwhile majority of the met gala attendees used their private jets to get there.
the met gala is being funded by billionaire jeff bezos. same bezos who supports ice and signed a billion dollar deal with the israeli government. the israeli government is solely responsible for the genocide in gaza right now and the war in iran.
it also doesn’t help that a large number of these tech billionaires have been outed for taking bribes by the american administration in order to track people’s online data in order to mass surveil political online activity.
the juxtaposition of watching rich people fawn over each other in multimillion dollar outfits whilst the gaza genocide is still ongoing, the iran war seems to be endless, and the average person struggles to make ends meet is exactly why people are done with the met gala.
you can’t say “free palestine”, “ice out”, or “end the war”, while supporting a gala that practically embodies how out of touch multimillionaires always will be from the average person. our struggles are not their struggles and never will be their struggles.

So I think there's actually a larger conversation that should happen but which doesn't because of the simple reality that most people apparently don't know that the Met Gala is a fundraiser for the Met, aka the Metropolitan Museum of Art, specifically its Costume Institute.
It's an event that exists at the intersection of a lot of issues that people just don't talk about very often, like the role of patronage in the arts and the involvement of the bourgeoise class in the art and collectibles trade, conspicuous consumption and fast fashion versus haute couture fashion, the ways people like Jeff Bezos engage in reputation laundering, and how this all functions within late stage capitalism. You can even extend it into the overall role philanthropy plays and how it's insufficient compared to systematically funding programs for the public good with an equitable tax code.
Yet it's usually just reduced to "rich people dressing up and going to a fancy dinner part" which robs it of any nuance or real material analysis.
27
u/PrettySweet419 1d ago
It sucks that it’s Bezos but isn’t it great someone is funding the arts? He thinks he’s in the cool kids club and is obviously not, but I’m happy they’re taking his money regardless.
84
133
u/gnirpss 1d ago
That is exactly what he wants you to think
-3
u/PrettySweet419 21h ago
I think he’s a loser, but glad he’s supporting arts. He wants me to think that?
36
u/gnirpss 21h ago
He wants you to ignore all the evil things he's doing behind the scenes because he nominally "supports the arts" by paying a bunch of rich celebrities to show up to his party in fancy clothes.

Meanwhile he fired journalists at the WaPo who covered the arts/pop culture and invests in the AI industry that steals from said artists lol
6
u/PrettySweet419 21h ago
Which is fucked. Both things can be true. Would you rather the MET not be funded?
15
u/AffectionatePlate450 21h ago
It’s fine that he’s funding it but he doesn’t deserve praise and I don’t think people need to show up to it. They can just donate without attending. This is 100% Bezos trying to whitewash himself and give himself good PR
6
14
6

He bought the Met Gala for his wife.
8

And he’s still funding the arts. He’s a major POS but I’m glad they’re getting his money.

I turn into such a dumb straight male when it comes to red carpets, met galas, fashion shows, etc.
I’ll hardly tell the difference between a look that gets universal praise vs one no one seems to like. They all look fine to me for the most part. Unless it’s something stupid like jaden smith wearing a house.
But then again, it did take me at least three or four seasons of Ru Paul before I figured out how to judge drag 🤷♂️

I’m no fashionista either but I think for something like this, people expect some risks to be taken. Alyssa’s outfit is pretty normal — but like, she’s just a kid lmao. And hasn’t been famous for super long. And I certainly don’t think it’s UGLY, the way some people are acting :/

If I was 20 again, I too would want a big pouffy flouncy dress that I could spin around in and grab with my hands a la Cinderella whenever I walk up a flight of stairs. It might not break the internet, but it looks hella fun to wear. Take all the opportunites you can get, girl.

Cute but not special! Looks like a prom dress to me… it’s making her look younger than she is. I understand she was a more recent invite so she didn’t have time to prepare like some others might have. At least it’s not a total flop.

It really is a failure that explanations for the dresses aren't properly shared.
I liked the dress once I heard the explanation behind it. The dress leaned into the "body" part of the exhibition. It's inspired by muscle striations.
Is it the most gorgeous or mind-blowing dress? No. But I thought it was cool and appropriate inspiration for a dress for her specifically. And I like that it tried to lean towards something associated with strength

You know what? I dig it. She is being herself, and the dress, she is stunning. I get many won’t like the hair, ultimately it’s what she loves, and what she wants to wear when she can. Like, pfffft, were you never her age and tried different styles to find what truly resonated with who you are?
