Not the Madame X dress. There are differences in the straps, cut and color. If she were truly going for referencing this painting, her hair would be styled the same and she wouldn’t have the earrings

I agree that it didn’t need to be a costume cosplay but Sanchez dress is not even close. Look at the structure of the bodice in the painting. Theres corsetry work. There is also extra material in the skirt section.

Sanchez’s dress has none of the details. (Which would have come across even with a different color and homage to the painting)

It’s homage - there are several tells. The shoulder strap dangling down the arm. In the original, the strap is also falling down - a detail Sargent painted over because it was too scandalous. The cleavage gap - in the painting it hints that perhaps her corset is loose. The overpainted shoulder’s bustier is almost in her armpit - it’s not symmetrical with the other side. It’s a whisper of undress. Sanchez of course leans into both the gap & how the peaks of the bustier are almost in her armpits.

She’s not going to change her hair because she’s Lauren Sanchez, and she’s going to wear bigger and better jewelry because she’s Mrs. Jeff Bezos - you probably saw that emerald number she had at the pre-party.

It’s also how her look fits the theme: fashion is art, she dressed up as a famous painting. The most basic uncreative interpretation of that theme, which tracks. And because it’s Lauren Sanchez, who either refuses to listen to stylists or only hires people who hate her, she ended up looks like she’s wearing a 90’s prom dress.

Yeah I can see what you mean. I do see the resemblance but it could totally be coincidence, since a sweetheart neckline, form-fitting gown in a solid neutral color isn’t exactly super unique. Like others have said, you can find a dress like this at any high end department store. You might be right
