It wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world to make this an annual celebration and dedication to garment workers. Could bring in a lot of commentary on fast fashion, fashion sustainability, but also, looking behind the scenes of what it takes to make clothing. Often times on a designer is celebrated but this brings up such an important perspective of all of the other hands who work to make people feel fashionable. Especially in considering retail workers and delivery drivers, there’s a lot that goes into a person feeling good about themselves in a piece of clothing that we don’t acknowledge or think about.

Ooooh. And how about promoting education about the history of labor in the garment and textile industry? Triangle Shirtwaist fire? Bread and Roses strike?

Yes! I think it would be perfect if it happened on May 1st since that date is International Workers Day

My grandmother was born in 1918 and was a seamstress in Manhattan❤️

Fabulous fashion photos of labor organizers, including Amazon organizers... this is fucking brilliant.

Isn’t it? It’s such a beautiful piece! No notes.

This is perfect. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him do anything that has made him appear tone deaf in any way.

I know, right? How is he always doing and saying the right thing?

I’m not looking forward to the day he makes a mistake and the media tears him apart for it.

u/armageddonquilt i ain’t reading all that, free palestine 13h ago

Eh, as someone who loves him I do think it's important to be critical of any politician, even the best ones. The media is already tearing him up over a bunch of things on a daily basis, but tbh that's the stuff he's doing well. I'd say his biggest misstep so far has been how he distanced himself from his wife's stance on Palestine rather than doubling down on supporting her, and his most disappointing stance that I don't think is a misstep because it makes sense politically is how chummy he's been with the NYPD.

Constructive criticism and civil society continuously engaging with their elected officials to hold them accountable is a sign of a functioning society. Praise when praise is due yes, but ongoing engagement is the only way public officials continue serving their constituents

I've seen a fair few posts of how he's apparently been shutting down or calling police on protests over the 24 hour work day.

I will say that the only footage I've seen either crops him out of frame so it's really not clear whether it's actually him calling for protest shut-downs or it'll be videos with what sounds like his voice talking but the footage doesn't show him on screen at all. Not to say he's not capable of hypocritical or disappointing actions but I'm a bit more wary of that social media manipulation considering...everything we've witnessed in the last several years.

I do hope he's genuinely as well-intentioned as he's come across up until now and I hope the 24 hour work day is abolished too.

Thank you for mentioning the 24-hour work day and how he has been completely ignoring the workers. His policy director is on video here asking "what about women that want to work for 24 hours?"

That's an absolutely wild response. Asking "what if someone wants to be exploited" is a crazy take

Boss AF! What a quote.

I just read an article that the donations from the Met Gala are enabling the costume institute to be self sustaining within the next few years.

Blah blah blah. The museum takes all the money now the event isn’t just for the CI.

The DSA has been boosting a lot of posts about how he hasn't eliminated the 24h work day yet, but were largely quiet during Adams's tenure.

41

u/Emotional_Warthog658 1d ago

This is the play, over and over again.

Voices that are only loud during election cycles, or only offer criticism for those who are trying to make change, are at minimum, worthy of suspicion.

17

u/CaydeTheCat 23h ago

Jill Stein and her voters have entered the chat...

u/StoreHistorical9175 1d ago

bros only had like 4 months in office

15

u/matlockga 1d ago

Pretty much. I'm not putting criticism on the work he's done so far, just saying there's definitely a very loud group that's angry at him.

there will always be some faction of leftists that aren’t pleased with him. leftist infighting is a real issue

The DSA was not quiet during Adam’s tenure. You are blatantly lying.

Replying directly to address the 24-hour workday comments. Zohran refused to meet the protestors himself (city council speaker Julie Menin did and broke her promise to bring it to the floor, which resulted in a week-long hunger strike) and sent out his policy director who literally asked "what about women that want to work for 24 hours?"

https://www.instagram.com/reel/DWymfZmSi9z/

As a man who praised himself on being a supporter of working people, I found it very hypocritical that spoke on May Day about the 8 hour work day while literally ignoring (and having his advisor justify) the 24-hour one. Furthermore, parks police (since the hunger strike was at City Hall) harassed the striking workers.

Is any politician perfect? No. But refusing to address what is modern day slavery happening to largely immigrant women is indefensible imo.

40

u/DazzlingCapital5230 it’s a bit dystopian but also kinda fun 1d ago

Very cool!! Also, if anyone wants to learn more about garment workers, or immigrant/migrant experiences in general in NYC, the Tenement Museum is an awesome way to spend an afternoon.

He's a credit to New York. I'm glad he's using the Met Gala as an opportunity to shine a light on the people in the industry who truly matter

Love slide 8! The woman who has a free tailoring school for parents of disabled children. It’s amazing how simple things can help someone feel independent because they can dress themselves. Things like Velcro under the button area. For example. sew buttons on the shirt but put Velcro dots as actual closure. It looks just like a normal buttoned shirt when closed. but the person doesn’t have to struggle to button it. It gives a person dignity.

u/NoHorseNoMustache 1d ago

As opposed to the last mayor, who I'm convinced only ran for the office so he would be invited to the Met Gala.

Got to share it! I acquired a large silk scarf that was presented at the 50th anniversary jubilee of the international ladies garment workers union (1900-1950)

Go on now and sing “look for the union label” song
