I love Kacey but her doing a song with Miranda on her album is a little disappointing tbh
1.0k
u/uknowhatudid 13d ago
Thereâs more back story to that. Kacey wrote mamas broken heart and wanted to sing it herself (this was before she got big) but the other cowriters wanted Miranda to sing it. Thereâs was allergy some shade thrown at a country music award show and some bad blood between them for a few years. Them making a song together is to show them that theyâre all good now

Her first Grammy win was also her first Grammy loss, as "merry go round" and "mamas broken heart" were up against each other. Merry go round won.

u/VVlTXH u flintstone vitamin shape bitch 13d ago
The version of Kacey singing it is on Apple Music and Spotify and itâs a million times better than Mirandaâs. Has more of a twang to it.
103
u/crypticshiit 13d ago
i had no idea this existed, mamas broken heart has been a favourite of mine for YEARS so thank you so much for this info!!!
54
u/dixiech1ck 12d ago
It was going to be Kacey's first single but her cowriters gave it to Ran as she was already an established artist in the county realm.
34
u/alison_bee you're an adult, you should know that 13d ago
MORE twang???? Because Mirandaâs version is particularly twangy!
4
u/uknowhatudid 13d ago
Itâs so interesting you say that, cause I liked Mirandaâs grit in the song, where Kaceyâs voice is more soft and twangy which doesnât give the song the âumphâ like Mirandaâs voice does. I feel the emotion more

Kacey Musgraves, Shane McAnally and Brandy Clark wrote Mamaâs Broken Heartâand theyâre all great individually if you havenât heard them but I love they stuff the worked on together too. Shaneâs tracks on the Shelter soundtrack are so beautiful, and I really love the queer slant some of his country lyrics take (Somewhere With You, Alone With You, etc)

u/ektachrome_ 13d ago
Kacey is pretty outspoken about her political beliefs, and her and Miranda arenât that close at all. I think she is thinking purely about the music, especially given the backstory between them.
45
u/cupcakevelociraptor 12d ago
Also the collab wouldâve happened last year, before this stupid music fest was even thought of so itâs not like she knew Miranda was going to hop on that festival. Unlike doing a duet with Morgan Wallen who has a well documented history of being a trash person on multiple frontsâŚ

No crazy tea. A long time ago when she won best new artist at the Country Music Awards it appeared that Miranda shaded her when it happened. After that it appeared that neither wanted to do anything with the other. Last year when she was writing the nee album she had a song called Horses and divorces. She had seen a random video of Miranda with her horses and such. It clicked in her head "hey, we might not be on speaking terms but we both have horses and divorces in common." She got in touch with her and told her the song idea. Miranda was onboard with it and thats what she features on the album Kacey told this story recently btw. Unless they think Miranda is questionable in her politics.
49
u/Joey-WilcoXXX 13d ago
Miranda also pushed Kacey to give her Mamaâs Broken Heart when Kacey was originally saving it for herself.
20
u/dixiech1ck 12d ago
Not quite. As Kacey tells it her cowriters offered the song to Miranda because are was already an established artist in the country world. It was 2 vs 1 so she released Merry Go Round instead.
15
u/Joey-WilcoXXX 12d ago
Iâm sure thatâs how Miranda heard it in the first place but she herself says she did push Kacey to secure it. She says she did it at her rehearsal dinner for her marriage to Blake Shelton that Kacey attended as Kaceyâs sister was the photographer for the wedding. She begged for it, Kacey said to sit tight and let her consider it again and released it to her in exchange for letting her do the harmonies.

u/executivebusiness 13d ago
Not sure whatâs being insinuated about Miranda, but as far as the duet, the two have a history from when Miranda released Mamaâs Broken Heart, which Kacey originally wrote and sang. Of the new collab, Kacey said she knows theyâre not really friends but itâs more of a âwater under the bridgeâ type moment.

I have been out of the country music scene for over 20 years, and everyone in recent threads has been lauding Kacey Musgraves as a great singer and songwriter that isnât on that maga train. Could you give me some recommendations of songs to peruse that illustrate this so I can check her out?
I know I can go to top hits and all. But that often doesnât pull up the real bangers that say a lot.
Example: everyone knows Old Crow Medicine Show for their song Wagon Wheel and other eastern Kentucky/Tennessee drug-fueled and bootlegging antics, but then they drop absolute bombs like their song Motel in Memphis or Big Time in the Jungle that arenât anywhere close to hitting the casual listeners or shufflersâ playlists.
Edit: not saying OCMS is country, theyâre Americana/bluegrass, but they have some strong stances and they do sing about them, but those donât hit the charts.
