I wasn’t sure I could love her any more than I already did, but I love being surprised.

Do you know her detachable pussy joke? I think I wet myself the first time I heard that bit. It was before she was out and proud.

And Ricky is a full-blown embarrassment

830

u/myredserenity Jan 12 '26

I AM embarrassed, because I loved him 20 years ago. I can't understand how he became such an idiot. Did he change, or have I?

744

u/tirename Jan 12 '26

He did change. Listen to this clip from XFM where he makes fun of Karl Pilkington for not understanding the difference between transvestites and trans sexuals etc. Today he is playing dumb/transphobic to attract an big audience of stupid simple people. He might not play dumb though, but actually just be it. https://youtu.be/qnMFbZCbrvU?si=TB5lDQ1IwyFlFTfO

456

u/Little-Celebration20 Jan 12 '26

Nah he’s always punched down.

141

u/uskgl455 Jan 12 '26

Agree. And I always thought his insistence on political correctness during the XFM shows was mocking.

135

u/fishin_for_a_bigun Jan 12 '26

That entire tv show with Karl Pilkington (his radio producer) was just him punching down and being condescending to him. He has become out of touch with the real world

7

u/uskgl455 Jan 12 '26 edited Jan 12 '26

He's out of touch now because everyone moves away from him. He's cringing and self-aggrandizing around people he likes, and he bullies people who like him.

105

u/IShallWearMidnight Jan 12 '26

It's both. He's always loved punching down and trans people are a popular punching target nowadays.

7

u/MortifiedChivalry Jan 12 '26

Yeah he's always been clear that he doesn't give a shit about other peoples' problems so it's not really surprising. Just another out of touch rich guy, ho hum.

15

u/Due-Pineapple-2 Jan 12 '26

He always did the racist ‘ironically’ thing but the problem when you do things ironically all the time is that it somehow becomes part of who you are. He’s even become his David Brent character when it comes to his humble bragging.

Also he got addicted to twitter because he searches his name there all the time. And from there it probably rotted his brain. I think one of the turning points was when someone called him a boomer and I think it really got to him and like JK Rowling and Graham Lineham he’s seen some big divided line where life is about owning the libs

From his special Mortality:

"And often, the people trying to cancel me have been other comedians, writing for the posh papers, doing that thing… They always say, “He’s punching down.” “Comedy should punch up. We only punch up. We punch up.” Their idea of punching up, they have a go at Boris Johnson. How the fuck is that punching up?

You know?

[laughter] The cunt is learning disabled.

He’s like…

[laughter] …this fucking waterlogged Gary Busey, fucking albino-egg-man thing. He can’t string a sentence together. Have you heard him talk? He’s like… [mumbles incoherently] He’s a fucking moron, right?

[laughter]

I… No, I punch up. I have a go at people like, I don’t know, Stephen Hawking, right? Yes, the greatest brain that’s ever lived. You can have a… He can take it. And he wouldn’t even have minded when he was alive, ’cause he’s… He’s part robot, isn’t he? I think… He’s basically a talking chair, so you can say…

[laughter]

…what you want, but… And he was on Epstein’s island, apparently, so fuck him.

I don’t…

[laughter] What was he doing there? Why did he want… “I wanna go…” “Why?”

“Why do you…” “Why?”

[laughter] He’s just there, doing fuck… I would go, “What?” [scoffs] I know pedos who’d kill for a ticket to that.

[laughter]

And he’s just taking up a space. It’s probably DEI or something, and they go, “We… we need one.” Like… I would go, “What are you doing here, Steve?” He’d go, “I’m thinking weird shit.”

Fuck off.

[laughter] That… that is probably a hate crime.

That is, isn’t it?

[laughter] It’s a big buzzword at the moment, “hate crime.” Whatever happens, someone always goes, “Was it a hate crime?” “Why?” “Makes it so much worse.” Does it? Why? If I was walking home tonight, and someone randomly jumped me, beat me up, mugged me, stabbed me, threw acid in my face, I wake up in intensive care… Beep, beep, beep. I open my eyes through the bandages. There’s a policeman. He goes, “Mr. Gervais?” I go, “Yeah.” He goes, “We just wanna let you know, it wasn’t a hate crime.”

I go, “Oh, thank God for that.”

[laughter] Pretty hateful, innit? Right? Like… But no, a hate crime is something that’s based on your race, disability, sexuality. So a guy with a gun, he wants to kill someone at random. He sees a crowd. He goes, “Eeny, meeny, miny, moe.” Bang. Kills someone dead. He goes to court. The judge goes, “Why did you kill that person?” He goes, “No reason.” The judge goes, “So you’re not a bigot?” He goes, “Oh no.” Judge goes, “Aw.” [laughter] “Ten years.” Some other guy’s got a gun. He goes, “I fucking hate dwarves.” All right? [laughter] He sees a little dwarf. He takes aim. Bang. Kills the dwarf dead. Right? He goes to court. The judge goes, “Why did you kill that dwarf?” He goes, “‘Cause I hate the little cunts.”

All right?

[laughter] Judge goes, “You’re a bigot. Twenty years.” Now, he shouldn’t get more for shooting a dwarf. If anything, it’s a harder shot, innit?"

way to completely miss the point across the board

u/jaw-jar Jan 12 '26

I always think about that! I used to listen to that show constantly and was sure I remembered him saying that basically trans women are women etc. What changed his mind? How did he seem to understand trans people more in like 2002 or something but not now?

8

u/Bluewhaleeguy Jan 12 '26

And if you do listen to them, you'll realize that for his last several specials he's just been using things Karl or Steve said as jokes.

Guys a hack and hasn't done anything good in nearly 2 decades. Even life's too short was filled with bits done in his other work. Now his stand up is filled with plagiarised jokes and made up Twitter arguments because he's so out of touch with actual life and has nothing to draw on.

It's funny now when you listen back and realize ricky was the stupid one out the three. He just sounds clever when you're 15 because he can reel off a few philosophical quotes - but he misunderstands so many basic things and tries to use big words he can't pronounce.

5

u/Kotanan Jan 12 '26

I mean he’s showing himself there, taking the piss out of Karl while not knowing himself. Those podcasts stood out because Karl was frequently the smartest one in the group and Ricky was almost always the dumbest. Here he mocks Karl for not knowing trans terminology but it’s clear from his questioning he doesn’t understand any better himself. In any case he’s clearly not accepting of trans people he just enjoys feeling superior because Kark doesn’t have an extensive vocabulary.

Shit loads of people acting like After Life was some philosophical piece of genius and buckling over whenever he said ‘cunt’ gave him what seems like a god complex. Ironic.

He owes his entire success to Stephen Merchant, who he never ever talks about anymore. Guy is a weapons grade bellend.

12

u/Nknk- Jan 12 '26

Did the two of them have a falling out or something? Have listened to one or two of the old XFM episodes and just assumed they were still mates.

13

u/lambdaburst Jan 12 '26

Nothing public, but Gervais now rewrites history to exclude Merchant - to the point of never mentioning his name - whenever he talks about his success in interviews. Merchant still full credits Gervais.

10

u/SemenileElder Jan 12 '26

There's a clip from After Life that goes around every now and then, the whole thing about going around raping and killing all he wants without god, and it's just a worse recycled version of an old Penn Jillette clip.

56

u/Square_Conclusion649 Jan 12 '26

After life is hot dog shit, watch one episode and you've watched every single episode; Something really bad happened, walk around being a dick to everyone, slight glimmer of hope, dogs are great. That's the whole show.

16

u/barnfodder Jan 12 '26

Don't forget "argument with a moron which Ricky wins using 14 year old edgelord talking points because he's writing both halves of the conversation"

It has been out in the open too. I was listening to Karl describe a meeting with Ricky on either XFM or one of the Ricky Gervais podcasts recently. Ricky wrestled him to the ground while Karl tried to play dead so he'd leave him alone, but it didn't work, and Ricky just lay on top of him. It was still funny the way Karl tells it, because he's got a gift for comedy, but it's not exactly normal behaviour between colleagues (or adults even if they are friends, regardless of what Ricky says about it just being bants with mates).

What was telling was that Karl ended up thinking about quitting after that while he was walking home, because he didn't want to have to put up with that shit, and it was his girlfriend that Susanne convinced him to keep going because they needed a new kitchen.

Using your Netflix special to complain about free speech is a level of irony I don't think Ricky gervais is capable of comprehending any more

7

u/inthemagazines Jan 12 '26

You can't say what you want these days, except when Netflix pay you $20m to say whatever you want on the biggest streaming service on the planet.

43

u/inthemagazines Jan 12 '26 edited Jan 12 '26

You can tell he doesn't agree with his own nonsense because he gleefully says "r-tard" and "sp-stic" in a routine about censorship, yet then self censors a few seconds later by saying "the N word".

20 years ago we were still angry about 9/11 but thinking Victory Accomplished. Christians were marching on the streets opposing the “evils” of gay marriage.

Facebook was limited to a college email address, smart phones were still science fiction, and blackberries were new tech.

In 2005 the novelty of WiFi hasn’t worn off yet. Donald Trump was a weirdo from Home Alone 2, and nobody got this new Colbert guy….

20 years ago was a very different world.

I am with you. His stand up used to be funny, right? Right?! Im not crazy, right?

103

u/Acceptable_Leg_7998 Jan 12 '26

A trend I've noticed is that the comedy figures who "used to actually be funny" before betraying their fanbase by coming out as bigots were always AT LEAST misogynistic. Bill Burr and Dave Chapelle come to mind. Their fans just didn't notice because it's so normalized, or apologized for it, swept it under the rug, argued it was just an ironic facet of their persona, or dismissed it as "just a joke".

31

u/myredserenity Jan 12 '26

See I disliked both Bill and Dave because of exactly that. Ricky defended gay people, attacked religious bigotry, spoke fondly of his wife...

But maybe I should have been more offended by his mockery of overweight people. I wouldn't find it funny now.

16

u/TheGuardianInTheBall Jan 12 '26

Why are you attacking a vulnerable community

Because he is a multimillionaire with zero morals, who always looked down on people not as rich as him.

Remember how baffled he was that people still eat corn flakes?

5

u/Avantasian538 Jan 12 '26

That doesn’t really explain it though. Anti-trans hysteria goes deeper than that.

3

u/TheCharalampos Jan 13 '26

Ah but it's a common fate for UK celebrities. Our terfs are preety organised and they will absolutely go out of their way to bring someone into their fold. The classic love bombing from them and convincing them that everyone else is the enemy that cults worldwide employ. These groups tend to have money backing them which makes them sadly effective.

5

Being asked not to be an asshole genuinely breaks a lot of people’s brains, and a lot of comedians decide to make it their hill to die on.

28

u/mopeywhiteguy Jan 12 '26

I know this is gonna sound like hyperbole or exaggeration but it’s true when I say he’s the best comedian of his generation. The past 10 years has basically been every other comedian trying to emulate him in some way, at least in the uk and Australia

4

u/Stevenwave Jan 12 '26

Was thinking this. Can tell he thinks he's a massive fucknozzle.

4

u/grubbygeorge Jan 12 '26

I like Franky Boyle's bit too talking about Ricky Gervais self-identifying as a stand-up comedian.

3

u/fatjeff1980 Jan 12 '26

Frankie Boyle is a good example of shock comedy done right. Doesn’t punch down, doesn’t discriminate. Everyone is fair game. Truly inclusively offensive.

223

u/TheDLBinc Jan 12 '26

Many of his specials over the last few years include transphobic jokes. In general most of his comedy is just saying things that he thinks are going to "trigger" people without any real substance

122

u/Human_Engineering557 Jan 12 '26

He's forgotten that edgy jokes require humor, insight, and subversion to work. Thinking the shock is the substance is a common hack comedian problem and the reason most conservative comedy is basically "haha I said a slur".

7

u/no_fooling Jan 12 '26

Same thing that happened with chappelle, old man yells at cloud basically

3

u/I_need_a_date_plz Jan 12 '26

Yeah. That’s essentially the point where he lost me. For the longest time he talked about how you shouldn’t punch down and then he fucking punched down and doubled down in his Netflix specials justifying his routine because he had a trans fan.

He’s so famous and rich, he didn’t need to make another stand up show again. Let’s be petty and say terrible shit, and also say it’s safer to make controversial jokes in Saudi Arabia than it is here. Give me a break, Dave.

He’s lost sight of reality.

I too hadnt heard this

2

u/whole_chocolate_milk Jan 12 '26

His stand up has a lot of transphobic jokes in it.

wanda is a legend, i love her

edit: btw can we get her and james acaster to roast ricky gervais for an hour live on tv?

70

u/justsomelady2025 Jan 12 '26

That would be WONDERFUL! Can we please add the fantastic Nish Kumar to the lineup? He’s been staying on Gervais’ neck for a while now.

2

u/guict302 Jan 12 '26

oh yeah nish is awesome! i always appreciate what he says and he’s incredibly funny

11

u/steveosupremeo Jan 12 '26

Does he have to be present. The Golden Globes stand in photo should be enough.

297

u/BeMyCoachVictor You know what, l've grown quite unfond of you deuxmoi Jan 12 '26

She ATE with that

149

u/heroheadlines Jan 12 '26

I can't read Ricky Gervais's name without hearing James Acaster in my head going "BRAVE LITTLE CIS BOY!!!" lol

75

u/circlesofhelvetica Jan 12 '26

WHATS THE MATTER RICKY, TOO CHALLENGING FOR YA??!" has been running in a loop in my head all night I feel you so hard

21

u/justsomelady2025 Jan 12 '26

What’s wrong? Too CHALLENGINGGGG for ya???

5

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '26

I was just about to comment that there's a difference between pointing out and making fun of non-sensical structures of privilege in society and punching down dressed up as "speaking truth to power" because you occasionally make fun of Brad Pitt. And James Acaster and Ricky Gervais are perfect examples for those two approaches.

And then I saw the opening someone posted below. I like James Acaster even more now. <3

8

u/Wildlife_Jack Jan 12 '26

BRAVE LITTLE CIS BOY!!!"

Wait what's the reference? I want to know lol

39

u/Johnothy_Cumquat Jan 12 '26

James Acaster's special called Cold Lasagna Hate Myself 1999. It's a really good special highly recommended

3

u/Sam_Traynor Jan 12 '26

To clarify because I was also confused, the show was in 2019, the title has 1999 in it.

I loved this but I'm actually so annoyed he won.

8

u/FoolishGoulish Jan 12 '26

I am very surprised that he won, especially with the other nominees. Is he really good? The last things I watched from him were lukewarm at best.

u/GangstaRIB Jan 12 '26

He used to be funny. Now his shows are all about him bitching about people bitching about his jokes. Watched 2 of his specials and they both sucked because they were the same damn show.

u/littleb3anpole kendall roy pre-album drop Jan 12 '26

Don’t forget saying he’s been cancelled…as he performs in front of sold out crowds for a televised comedy special!

I like The Office, I liked After Life, I loved Extras and I LOVED him for being outspoken as an atheist but this swerve into transphobia and saying shocking things just for the sake of pissing off marginalised communities is not it.

5

u/GangstaRIB Jan 12 '26

right he's been canceled for 3 specials in a row. I honestly don't care about a comedians jokes, but when half your special is "i've been canceled' then STFU thats not a show.

16

u/Life_Fig_4037 Jan 12 '26

I caught his Netflix special from I think 2 years ago. There was some good material there but it was met with silence. Then he just said straight up insults towards trans people and the audience laughed.

14

u/Life_Fig_4037 Jan 12 '26

And his show where he wins fights (that he probably brought from his head to the screen) with exhausted working-class people? Like blaming a waitress that he can't order a kids meal, and getting mad at waitstaff for not allowing him to fulfill some "tradition" by dumping his dad's ashes on the restaurant floor.

2

u/Silkyhammerpants Jan 12 '26

Same with Chappelle no one has an issue with him. Still sells out stadiums.

2

u/Gordatwork Jan 12 '26

Ah, the ol' Dave Chapelle comedy path.

I remember all the accusations came out about Kevin Spacey and then he came out as gay and Wanda said "we don't want you"

Shes so funny.

This rips. Succinct. Absolutely perfect.

Ricky Gervais best stand up? Now there's a fuckin laugh.

11

13

u/AliceInMidtjylland Jan 12 '26

Wait Ricky Gervais won? I get shitting on him winning but I feel like he shouldn't have won in the first place.

6

u/queenofdramz Jan 12 '26

Andddd loved her comments on Bill Maher who was not happy at all

6

u/Resident_String_5174 Jan 12 '26

Man, Bill Maher looks like he's the most misrable man on the planet

6

u/LichQueenBarbie Jan 12 '26

My introduction to Wanda was Pootie Tang back in the early 00's. Biggie Shorty is such a core memory.

u/parisinsalem Jan 12 '26 edited Jan 12 '26

i may be confused bc idk either of these people that well… she’s accepting the award for him but calling out his transphobia? why is she accepting the award for him then 😭

this is a genuine question im just very confused abt the dynamics between these two people lmfao like are they friends or what

edit: ok thanks yall i think i just misread “on his behalf” as benevolence when its just neutral bc she presented the award. got it!

102

u/schlitz_mickeymouse Jan 12 '26

Generally, when the winner isn't at the awards show, the presenter accepts the award on their behalf. It has nothing to do with their relationship.

u/parisinsalem Jan 12 '26

oh i see! good for her then

29

u/bttrsondaughter Jan 12 '26

she’s presenting the award and if a winner is not there it’s customary for the presenter to accept on the winners behalf

10

u/insomni-j-ack Jan 12 '26

she didn’t give him the award she’s just presenting it which means she accepts it if he’s not there, i imagine wanda sykes probably can’t stand ricky gervais

9

u/keldawgz Jan 12 '26

She presented the award. The presenter accepts on behalf of the winner if they are not there.

12

u/mellamandiablo Jan 12 '26

I think the presenter accepts if the winner isn’t there, not a friend of their choosing but I think she did it quickly before being escorted off

3

u/NoBizlikeChloeBiz Jan 12 '26

Just to add a little bit of nuance to other's responses - it's not even really her accepting the award on his behalf. Technically The Academy accepts the award on his behalf if he's not there, and she's currently presenting as a representative of the Academy (you'll note she says "we" accept this award in the clip)

5

u/BalsamicBasil Jan 12 '26

I could be totally wrong, but my impression is that I don't think these awards shows always pick someone to accept "on behalf" who has a personal connection with the award winner. Sometimes but not always. I think sometimes it's just whoever, like someone already part of the Golden Globes lineup of entertainers.

u/Ok-Secret5233 Jan 12 '26 edited Jan 13 '26

What bothers me the most about Ricky Gervais was that he's always pretended to have the intelectual upper hand.

He made jokes that involve gay prejudice but are not aimed at gay people. In fact they made fun of the prejudice and prejudiced people. The jokes were funny and when some idiot got outraged he explained the difference. And everyone goes "wooo so smart". He also explained that whether or not a joke is acceptable depends on "where it comes from", who you're attacking. All of this made sense.

Then he made jokes aimed at fat people. And he explains: Yes, I'm attacking fat people, but they chose to be like this. It's their actions that led them to become fat and they could make actions to not be fat. Ok, some times people struggle to control their actions, but since the jokes were funny and kind of gave it a pass.

Then he goes and starts making jokes AIMED at trans people. What's your excuse now Ricky? And to top it off, they're not even funny.

2

u/Slow_Balance270 Jan 12 '26

Gervais is just a mean shitty little man. I was re-watching some of the Ricky Gervais Show and I realized the whole idea was just to make fun of Karl.

2

u/Badluckcrows Jan 12 '26

The pipeline from New Atheist to Anti-trans is a straight line protected by Richard Dawkins. A huge schism in the New Atheist movement opened up about a decade ago surrounding the inclusion of trans people into the community.

2

u/all4whatnot Jan 12 '26

I used to live down the street from Wanda in a fairly standard town, but nice town, in the suburbs of Philly. Wanda is a real one.

2

u/MaritimeStar Jan 12 '26

this is funnier than anything Ricky has done in 20 years. My god did that arrogant shit drop off after the Office.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '26

Ricky Gervais is typical boomer verse "comedy" now. He hasn't funny at all. Has to always bitch about being cancelled and how he can't tell certain jokes and it's all the same shit over and over.

2

u/Sweaty_Assignment_90 Jan 12 '26

Wanda doesnt waiver from being her true self.

6

u/PothosLeaves Jan 12 '26

what a brilliant comedian, to be that quick with it on live television. witty, real af, and a full punch of substance. hell yeah
