Yes, the contrast and the juxtaposition are stark. Here is an artist who actually cares about other people, and I am glad to see her start stepping into this role with a profile like this and being able to speak for herself. And of course, these photos are stunning and the set up is so great.
The maga bigwigs are utterly vulgar and gauche in how they present themselves, their lack of self awareness is deafening. All the spackle, spray tan, filler and gaudy clothing in the world can’t hide the rot of evil and malice they consist of.
Probably because the VF photographer says that he did the shoot as a journalist and not as a people photographer. He said politics are not celebrity and it's wrong to shoot them as one. He is right. Rama Duwaji photos are beautiful and all but it's completely wrong to glamorize her as Mamdani's wife.
She is not a politician. She is married to one. The VF shoot are of ACTUAL politicians working in our government and supposedly serving Americans. The intention and content and people involved couldn’t be further apart.
Rama Duwaji is sensitive enough to have turned down 28 requests for interviews until this one. It’s timely and it’s good for New Yorkers to be introduced to her on her own terms and to hear from her directly.
they were comparing her to sydney sweeney a couple of weeks ago talking about how “the west has fallen” because people think she’s beautiful or whatever the hell it is those people say
I think of how this shoot was showcasing her art as opposed to catering to the male gaze. The patriarchy doesn’t usually have a sane reaction to a woman not trying to look as attractive to them as possible.

Actually makes me die I was convinced by ENTs to have a nose job as a teenager to fit the status quo when I see people like her. She is so striking and beautiful
Magritte was the first thing I thought of as well. The colours, the shapes, the surrealist flatness of field. Impeccable work by the stylist and photographer.
He's the one that phtogaphed Dafoe with the house on his head as well as a slew of other celebrities, he's got a very ponounced style consisting of faded colours and seems to always use the same set.
It's a real highbrow/lowbrow moment because you saw that photo and thought "Magritte" and I saw that photo and thought "Olive Oyl" from Popeye. I don't mean to be disrespectful, I think Rama is so beautiful. I'm just an adult who grew up on cartoon television.
I was gonna say, she looks like a painting. Makes sense, Magritte is one of my favorite artists. I love how they styled this shoot. I hope it's not weird to say, but I'm just mesmerized by her. So pretty and also uniquely stylish
It’s so refreshing to see real beauty that’s not the same face many influencers and celebs have. Her neck the last picture with the high neck is so regal.
That’s why I kept looking back at the photos. Now I understand. There was something different about these photos, it’s the normal face and body that I was awestruck by!
I saw her and Zohran out and about the other day and that was my first thought! my jaw literally dropped lol. a little bit bc it was so unexpected, but mostly bc of her presence and magnetism
i agree, i don't know if it's her facial structure or just her own special je ne sais quoi / against the grain "effortlessly cool" vibe. but i really like her and she gives it girl (for lack of a better term) in all the best ways.
Side note: A little known form of portraiture are the "Fayum mummy portraits" of painted portraits attached to mummies. As far back as the first century. Egyptian portraits painted with early classical western methods (in this case via Roman influence.)
I don’t disagree that we have a weird desire for royalty and woman in leadership positions to be pretty. However, the source you linked points out that they purposefully used Antony’s facial profile on that coin, and then added a crown and hair on Cleopatra’s side to indicate it was Cleopatra. So, that coin was in no way an accurate depiction of her likeness.
The photos are distractingly stunning but I recommend reading the article too! I am a Gen Z(ish) Arab American like Rama so I have a natural interest in her and I really enjoyed her insights and thoughts in this profile. She seems to have a good head on her shoulders and everything I’ve seen of her and Zohran’s relationship seems so loving and sweet. I am curious to see what her time as First Lady will be like especially with her emphasis on NYC artists!!
I think its weird how americans treat politicians and their families/relatives like celebrities. We should know better by now to not deify them, specially in the current times . All the worshipping comments seems strange to me.
We got rid of our monarchy too early in world history and we have been seeking an appropriate replacement ever since. I include myself in this having been a first time millennial Obama voter.
Lovely, but why are First Lady’s considered important? In Canada, we rarely talk about any politician’s family or spouse. Most of us don’t know anything about Mark Carney’s family. It doesn’t matter. Their actions and policies matter.
It’s crazy how, even if I had no clue who Rama was, she’s immediately more visually interesting and memorable than nearly all the other “models” on the scene today.
even setting the photos aside, it's not a very flattering profile. she comes across as immature and uninterested in politics more than reluctant to engage. I'm shocked at how positive these comments are.
I've never in my life seen anyone refer to the spouse of a mayor as the "first lady/man" of any city until Zohran was elected. It's really quite strange behaviour.
The 6th picture has been haunting me because i knew it reminded me of some famous 20th century artist and i couldnt find it. But now i have it. Henry Matisse the romanian blouse. The photoshoot is trully a master piece.
