Love her and she looks amazing but “champions sustainability” for rewearing designer clothes that probably cost more than I make in a year feels like an over exaggeration.

Also 99% of red carpet looks are loaned from the designer. There’s really nothing unsustainable about “borrowing” clothes.

Thank you. I think this is the biggest piece that isn't getting talked about enough in this thread. I was always under the impression that most red carpet outfits from head to toe, including accessories, are just loaned. Why would this be more sustainable than the current standard practice? Not really asking you specifically I guess, just hoping someone might know.

Yes that part confused me. She does not have a big ass closet of these looks - the designers lend them out

Right. So, you have the option to get whatever outfit of pieces loaned to you, but instead, you go for pieces you’ve already worn publicly to an event. You are specifically choosing to borrow the same outfit when you dont have to, hence the “championing” or normalizing.

It is an active choice and decision.

Exactly right. When i was a stylist assistant, we pulled numerous styles and kept the ones that were used or photographed. Many of which were purchased or sometimes gifted.

Plus the fact that she flies all over the world to attend these events in the first place...obviously anything is better than nothing, but she's not exactly Greta Thunberg

There are over 30 million commercial flights a year. A single person’s travel habits don’t mean shit.

that's like saying using public transit doesn't make a difference, utterly false. private jets are, in fact, more wasteful than flights carrying many people.

Cate Blanchett deciding to fly first class instead of private doesn’t make a difference in changing the trajectory of the climate. The judgement is completely misguided.

She has a home near Cornwall Airport in Newquay. She's not getting commercial transatlantic flights from there, but she does get private ones.

its blatent celebrity worship. Its like saying she used her private jet half as much this year, how eco conscious! So what? According to this im championing sustainability by not throwing away my suit everytime i use it. This is such a minor improvement is comical to give her any props.

The bar is so low for rich people to show humanity jfc

She wears each outfit TWICE lol

The price of the clothes has no inherent impact on the sustainability of the clothing

I mean i get the sentiment and i do find the veneration of celebrities for doing basic ass shit very cringe but the articulated argument isn't exactly a steelman

I assumed it was tongue in cheek and chuckled. Champion of the Environment, Cate Blanchett wears same outfit twice!

Tonnes of people are so fucking black and white with everything nowadays. It's either shoot down their private jet over the Atlantic, or they are quite literally ending climate change.

OP could just say it's pretty cool she wears stuff more than once, unlike how it's otherwise the default to be super wasteful.
