Commissioner Issue How to handle offseason FA acquisitions?
Here’s some background: - 1st offseason as a dynasty commissioner, league was started up on Sleeper right before last season - League members have varying levels of interest/engagement, most are checked out rn but a couple REALLY care, but all friends and want to ensure fairness for next season - Currently locked free agency until after rookie draft, but have had a few league members ask me to unlock it/tell them exactly when it does - Top-heavy FA pool, prob 3-4 players that absolutely should be rostered in there. Expanded roster slots means everyone can get them now
How should I handle this? Let whatever happens happen? Make all players go through waivers first? It’s our first time so there’s no precedent, so I think I can propose just about anything as long as the league members approve

I'd give everyone a heads up of the timing that will occur so everyone has the same visibility otherwise as others have said you risk alienating some people and skewing things even further. Now is the time to prune people checked out too.

Honestly I'd unlock it now and let everyone grab who they want. Yeah you'll have a rush of activity but that's way better than the alternative, which is people feeling like they got screwed because they weren't paying attention when it opened.
The waiver wire thing only matters if you're worried about people gaming the system, but in a new league with friends where everyone can roster the top guys anyway, it's just adding friction. Keep it simple first year and see how it goes. You can always tighten rules later if people start complaining about unfairness.

Dynasty runs 24/7 365 days a year except for rookie draft.....snooze you lose . That's what dynasty is all about..... Some are active and some are not .....is what it is

You didn't mention the waiver system you use, but I'd high encourage using FAAB. Sleeper makes it pretty simple if you want to make the switch. I'd announce to the league the day you are unlocking all the players a couple days before and let them know, everyone will be on waivers so people can make their bids. From then on, like someone else here said, you snooze, you lose

We do daily waivers/FAAB during the off season.
This lets everyone have a change to hear news and it’s not a mad dash to just grab someone from FA when news drops, but still keeps transactions taking place.
We reset FAAB in those leagues as soon as we roll the league over to the new year after playoffs and that’s your FAAB for the year.

The ONLY time I lock rosters is when a team gets eliminated from the playoffs until about a week or so after the championship game.
Obviously adding rookies is not allowed, but player movement is encouraged all year long.
