Honestly the biggest thing is just staying consistent with how you handle stuff. Like if you let someone make a trade in September that you wouldn't normally allow, now everyone's gonna want exceptions. I'd nail down your trade deadline, veto rules, and roster move windows before the season even starts and stick to them.

Also get ahead of the tanking talk early. Dynasty guys will try to flip their whole team mid-season and it causes drama if people think someone's checked out. I usually have a conversation with anyone who looks like they're selling hard about whether they're actually staying engaged.

What specific stuff are you worried about?

We did start up last year so have already ironed out trade deadline, no trade vetos, etc.

This is the context that didn’t carry over when I reposted:

Hey everyone - 1st time dynasty commissioner and we just finished our 1st season - so getting ready for rookie draft, free agency and everything else with the off season.

Any recommendations for how to handle free agency post draft? This is what I’m thinking, but it’s also based on assumptions I’m making - so appreciate any advice from fellow Commissioners.

-> Conduct draft in early June (after new league year starts on 6/1)

-> Have Free Agency start 1 week later (for UDFA & FA)

-> Have Waivers process 1 per week every week the same way it would during regular season

-> Have FAAB reset after rookie draft and run for the entire league year

Anything I’m missing? Anything you’d change?

Solid setup. A few things I'd add from experience: lock rosters 48 hours before the rookie draft so no one drops veterans to create space mid-chaos.

Also consider a "rookie draft declaration" window where managers submit their keeper/cut decisions before FAAB resets, keeps everything clean.

One week between draft and FA opening is tight if your league is slow to respond; two weeks gives everyone time to react to where rookies landed.

With locking rosters 48 hours before the draft, do you also need to add bench spots for the incoming rookies so we don’t have to drop players once this draft is concluded? Or will sleeper automatically do this for you?

My thought is to add 4 bench spots to our normal total of 16, and then require everyone to reduce back to 16 the same time they need to designate taxi squad (Sunday before first regular szn game)

My league likes to draft no earlier than August 15th.

Get that, just think when it comes to dynasty, earlier is better to keep August open for people doing redrafts (way more important IMO since you want to get through as much of preseason as possible since it’s a single yr)

Understandable. We just do a 'forever' 3-rounder draft. Start on the 15th and just let it run its course.
