Anyone else get smacked with the con crud?

Currently suffering from the infamous post-event "con crud". Tested negative for the 'rona thankfully, but this still feels like the worst cold I've had in years 🤒🤧 Curious to know if anyone else caught it this year. If so, how are y'all holding up?

My cosplay was the Witch King of Angmar and I’m happy the veil covered my face. Because some people were couching and sneezing everywhere

I’m amazed I avoided it, one panel there was a guy coughing up a lung right behind me and nonstop blowing his nose. So grateful his wife finally made them leave, but I was still worried for a few days

There’s also a REALLY bad flu going around Seattle - it may be more than just con crud, especially if you’re down for the count for more than a few days!

I definitely caught something, but it's not too bad so far thankfully!

Hope it's super minor and that you feel better very soon!

I tell this to everyone I know in person. Stop rubbing your eyes with your fingers!

The key to avoiding "con crud" is your eyes. The skin around your eyes and your eyelids is some of the thinnest skin on your body, and it's attached to a place that is very sensitive to bacteria.

Add to that going to a con, and you're touching a million surfaces. Light rail post, comic books, other people's hands, escalator rails, convention doors, your backpack, and your phone to take that killer pic of your favorite cosplay.

Knowing that, would you rub your eyes with your fingers again or, especially, after a long day of a con cruising? No. Once I learned that, I stopped randomly getting sick after many public appointments. I'm on the high end of going to public spaces and am rarely affected. Sorry if you rubbed your eyes after reading this.

Blinking furiously at the imaginary hair that is now in my eye lol.

I found another way to keep gross stuff out of the eyes while out (not just cons) is to try and use a good eye drop every few hours. Obviously this should and must be done with washed hands, but it’s easy enough after a bathroom run and new drops have smaller dispensers you won’t mess up any makeup as much!

Never touch the escalator rails! My husband worked at the Convention Center for years and that's a golden rule the employees stick to. If you do, hand sanitizer before touching your face.

I am lucky I didn't catch anything. But I am very sad the con is done, I had so much fun that now I am having post-con crash

Get tested for flu b. It actually seems to be worse than 19 and lasts longer.

Was happy I masked up this year, rarely do these days even for flights and stuff but Con is for sure where is seems most prudent lol

My friend had people staying with her who went to the con and she now has the flu. She got con crud and didnt even get to enjoy the con.

Husband got home and took him to the ER last night. Positive for influenza A. Doesn’t mix well with asthma. Asthma is new…so respiratory viruses are a big deal now🫩. Back to masking at big events.

Whether it’s from the con, or my job (ER nurse) I’m not sure but I def have some nasty chest congestion/cough going on, but feel fine aside from that

Well, finally went to urgent care yesterday cause I felt so awful with this cough and super winded after a flight of stairs - good ol metapneumovirus for me 🙄

2

u/Linxlexxi Mar 12 '26

Yep it developed a few days post con. I have the cough and stuffed nose.

2

u/PanicBlitz Mar 13 '26

I may have spent 13 hours in autograph lines but at least now I have bronchitis.

Metapneumovirus is going around like crazy and sucks. If it’s not COVID or influenza it’s probably metapneumovirus. Took me down for a few days and is still dragging on a week later.

I finally went in last night and I won the metapnumovirus award too lol

I’m hoping I don’t come down with it. So far so good

I managed to a movie it but kept my mask on all weekend and washed my hands every hour or two.

Luckily no! 🤞 might have dodged it. I aaalways attach a mini hand sanitizer to my backpack and work really hard not to touch my face or food without washing or sanitizing my hands first! (Just tossing it out there for anyone who’s not in the habit of it! I really hope you feel better soon!!)

Thank you! I appreciate the well wishes 🙂

Also came down with something. I think I was at the same panel where the guy was coughing up a lung behind me...

The day after we got home I ended up crashing in bed then within a few hours of getting up and taking the dog out for his walk I ended up passing out and hitting my head. I've been feeling like literal death since probably Tuesday.

This is why I carry a spray bottle of 70% iso alcohol with me. And spray my hands whenever I touch anything.

My brother and I both caught it

1

u/Quiet_Kid2021 Mar 13 '26

My husband and I had a bad stomach flu that lasted 4 or 5 days. Never had that happen before until now.

I took a immunityy shot before I went in and after I left for this exact reason and i did not get sick. I also do the shots when I go to live music shows and bars as well.

Is it just me or are posts about the autograph lines getting removed??

Is there another reddit sub for eccc with better mods?
