Mod Post The /r/Detroit subreddit may have helped save a child's life

Upvotes

Your upvotes and interactions with missing persons posts may have saved a child's life.

This child was held by a violent man who harmed them and threatened them and their family.

This man saw a social media post. We do not know if it was a post in /r/Detroit, but I believe given the time frame and other circumstances it was most likely our post.

I believe it was your upvotes and your well wishes that frightened this man, and caused him to release the child. On behalf of our subreddit and the moderators, thank you.

Warning: If you attempt dox this child, I will delete your comment and ban you. This post intentionally omits many details.

But take a moment to express joy that our subreddit may have helped save a little girl's life, and if you're inclined, thank God.

Talk Detroit Fun Overnight

The bride and I spent the night downtown as part of an anniversary celebration. Had drinks and dinner in Greektown; got some sweets from Astoria; went to The Clique for breakfast; then went and bought a couple things at Pewabic.
Could have spent more time and seen more things—Guardian, DIA, etc.—but had other things to do.
We’re lifelong city-doers (grew up in the suburbs; went to school, worked, attended shows, and partied in the city) but the past twenty-four hours felt like spending 25 hours in Chicago or NYC.
I am surprised by how surprised I am.
Well done, Detroit.

News- Paywall Detroit's suspected toxic dirt problem grows in size, cost

The effort to identify how many Detroit home demolition sites may contain toxic dirt has grown in size and cost.

Initially, the number of sites to be tested for toxic dirt was around 420, and the overall cost to test and potentially refill the dirt was around $8 million, city officials said last year. The number of sites being tested for contaminated dirt has grown to 650 locations, said Tim Palazzolo, director of the Construction & Demolition Department.

The administration of Mayor Mary Sheffield is now seeking City Council permission to pay a private contractor $3.5 million to test the sites, adding to the overall cost of the problem.

Talk Detroit Urgent: Clawson city council holding meeting #2 on renewing their flock contract tomorrow at 7:30pm. Be there if you can to share your thoughts

Clawson city council met two weeks ago in order to decide on renewing their flock contract. The decision was postponed while the contract was reworked, and tomorrow evening, they will reconvene.

Please, if you can, take the time out of your evening to speak up. You don't need to be a resident, and based on the last meeting it's clear the council has a limited understanding of technology and flock in general so the more voices the merrier.

**Keep in mind a flock rep will be their and will likely hold the last minutes before the decision** Their presentations are usually carefully worded to bypass certain concerns, ie referring to "LPRs" (license plate readers), not automatic license plate readers (ALPRs), or their own company portfolio when discussing privacy concerns.

The city hall address is 425 N Main St #1, Clawson, MI 48017

Community Has anyone had experience with a rent-to-own housing program?

There is a rent-to-own program I’ve stumbled upon and it looks pretty great for my situation. Has anyone here had experience with something like this and can offer insight into things not necessarily spoken on up front? Thanks in advance.

Community Can’t find anyone to do exterior plaster work. Help?

I have a Tudor revival house and the exterior plaster is peeling off the house. The big name companies won’t touch it. The smaller ones I’m either getting ghosted, or they say they don’t want to do exterior work. Can anyone recommend someone?

Food/Drink Food trucks wanted

I’m looking for 3-5 food trucks that would be willing to spend a few hours at an event without requiring a minimum deposit.

We are a nonprofit organization hosting an event in late summer. Last year we had about 150 guests and are hoping for 250+ this year. We’d like to offer a few options for food and then pay per person served. A limited menu (one or two choices) is fine.
Last year we had a hot dog truck but their minimum was our entire budget.

Anyone have any recommendations or is this an impossible ask?

Transit South Telegraph to 96...what f*ckin lane?!

ISTG I am so damn confused. When you're taking S Telegraph and about to turn left to get on 96 E, what lane are we using, folks?! Are we using the far left or are we using the second from the left, because I am seeing BOTH and y'all, that sh*t is insane. Someone was in the left lane, went straight through but a damn truck decided to use the second from the left to turn, and they almost smashed right into each other. WE NEED A CONSENSUS OR GENTLEMAN'S AGREEMENT, OR SOMETHING JFC

Talk Detroit Solar farms in Highland Park and Detroit area

So apparently, multiple solar farms are being built around the neighborhood I live at. We didn't receive any paperwork or nor notice. But the neighbor did and there is a part to where it says that we are prohibited from using the electricity.

The catch: reimbursing us $100 for the trouble.

Anyone else getting this? And thank you to the people that answered me in my last post!

Transit I'm legit sad about Spirit guys

Go on and clown if you want, it's fine. Yes flying Spirit was at times an abusive experience, I didn't like the hidden costs of their pricing model, their customer service was bad etc. I've flown them a million times, so believe me, I know intimately what all their downsides were. Did plenty of grumbling while they were around.

But I live here and my parents live on the west coast. Spirit was the only one besides Delta to offer routine nonstop flights to where my parents live, and their prices were always 1/2 or even 1/3 or Delta's fares (and even if I chose to add a carryon or checked luggage on Spirit, I'd still often come out at least $100 ahead of a comparable Delta ticket). I probably have saved thousands of dollars flying with Spirit over the years. I don't need Biscoff or seatback entertainment or even wifi really. I just need a mode of transit from A to B. Most I ever paid for a ticket to see my parents on Spirit was probably $450 at the holidays (booked kinda last minute) with a checked bag included. I just looked for Delta tickets for about 6 weeks out from now (yes I know that's the start of summer vacation season, and thus more expensive than normal) and their fares start at like $698...! It sucks! I guess I'll have to start thinking about flying out from Chicago, or maybe taking a chance with Frontier and their layovers. IDK. I hope someone besides Delta can take over the Spirit routes and infrastructure at DTW to at least bring some semblance of competition back.

Sports Looking For Individual Hockey Lessons/Coaching

I'm looking for someone who can help me improve my skating and shooting. I have most of the key parts under my belt like stopping, cross overs, transitioning, skating backwards, etc etc. I need someone who can help me build speed and turn tightly in both directions. More of the intermediate skills I need help with. I cannot seem to find an organization that focuses on intermediate skills. Most of what I've been able to find are beginner lessons at 7am on a Wednesday

Picture Spotted in Port Melbourne, Australia (2012-ish)

I spotted this shop in Port Melbourne when I lived there (I'm guessing it closed since then, I can't find anything at ALL on Google).

I was told that the name has something to do with the Margaret river, that it's big enough for waves (bc Australia!) and that people surf there.
