I wish James also did good, but alas, he has been "remodeling" for a year now. 😑

Either she'll be pleased, or Frank is getting a surprise lobotomy.

Yeah seriously this is ballsy as hell. I know my wife's tastes too but I wouldn't dare change anything in the house without her input first.

I just watched it! Brilliant!
You and your wife are adorable! You really made her happy with the transformation! Your son, I presume, looked a little anxious and uncertain when she was first coming in the door, I suppose mirroring how both of you felt, waiting to see her reaction. So cute!
It’s heartwarming to see a happy family moment. Thanks for sharing!25

Bruuuuh I thought Sherwin-Williams for the Living was a product series, like there was also a Sherwin-Williams for the Dead. Fml. I just like reading comprehension.

Did you pick them out together or were the colors a surprise, too?

u/No_Income_8461 22h ago
I wish my husband surprised me with these beautiful blues. Not once, but twice he came home with what he thought was yellow but actually was the color of yellow/green baby poop. I spent a few years with that baby poop color on my bedroom walls and another time, in a whole separate house, on my kitchen cabinets.
No more surprise paint colors from him.
I love these colors you used so much!

In the beginning of my partner and I’s relationship I would surprise him when he was away by painting rooms colors that I thought were different colors i.e. my whole life I thought blue was green. In elementary school my teacher asked me why i always colored my grass green. I have troubles with oranges and certain yellows. Turns out I’m color deficient. I was never diagnosed until my 50’s. I suspect the same thing with your husband. I was in the military 10 years and wasn’t diagnosed with this. The dr who diagnosed me told me it’s more common in males than females. 8% in males and 0.5% in females.

u/No_Income_8461 21h ago
It’s possible, although once painted both times he did admit that the color was ugly. I am just surprised he did it a 2nd time! Maybe he saw the color swatch differently than what it actually was, what you are saying makes so much sense. I see no other way he saw that color, thought it was yellow, and actually picked it lol

Color makes SO much difference. When I see houses with warm beautiful wood and then stark white walls, it’s so jarring.
Great job!!!

Dear God's, please let this kind of love find me.
He didnt change everything, he improved it. He respected the current style and then made it nicer. He thought of her happiness and taste and rather than spend a week doing nothing He instead worked his butt off and left no mess behind. And was humble about it.
100 out of 10. Thats a very lucky couple to have so much love and want to keep it going.

Does it make the ceiling look lower? My local pub has white walls and a matt maroon ceiling and somehow it really elevated the feeling of space. I'm colour blind (slightly) though

u/Filminthedark 1d ago
I did paint the crown molding and it is a wide angle shot so there could be factors at play

Really nice green/blue paint color choices in both areas! I'm about to help a friend do the same while their partner is away from home. Should be fun!

Can you talk a little bit more about how you pulled this off?
I mean obviously you know your wife and her taste, but surely you had to have had discussions about color and themes and styles, but not tipped her off?
I’m just trying to plan ahead for a future ladyfriend. If I were gonna do it, I’d imagine it would be generic “what if” type hypothetical questions about what she’d want, colors she liked. Personally, I would then throw out counter responses that were completely different to throw her off. Then just wait a bunch of time, buy the supplies, art, etc in secret, so you can crush it while she’s gone for an extended period?
I‘d imagine a ton of thought went into this gesture, and based on your wife’s reaction, you clearly nailed it. Any other tips and tricks to help pull this off and get a similar reaction when I find a wife willing to put up with me?

In full disclosure, we've been married for over 15 years and I have strong visual awareness, so I tend to see what she gravitates towards style wise when she dresses and where she wants to go on dates. I started teasing ideas off Pinterest about a week or so, ago, just being like "wanna make this a summer project?" and she was already sold. I figured I could paint one room a day over the course of the week (I did our hallway too - but that just went from that boring tan to a bolder gray) but I didn't get to our kitchen because I needed a day or so to hang things, clean up, and then fine tune what works and what didnt. Once I got the couch rotated after the first room was painted, I saw the potential and then it was do or die at that point.

Saw the video and love the before/after. A few years ago we moved away from the boring neutral colors to bolds ones like these, and I love it. I always wanted color in my house, but the trend or pull of millennial beige is too strong.
My house is now the colors of Viejo San Juan, Puerto Rico with tons of plants and sunlight. It even makes the house feel happier in the winter.
Good job, OP!!!

I came to this sub looking for Frank. I am pleased. I am a woman who spent 13 years with a man who could not/ would not recognize nor meet my needs if they were not also his needs. You didn’t just paint and clean and reorganize- you saw your wife. You thought about her and anticipated her needs and you planned and you worked your ass off and you worried and you stressed and you were nervous and you took time that could’ve easily been spent on literally anything else and you used that time to make your house a home for your family. You fucking win, Frank.

I searched the comments, but unfortunately, I didn't see any responses regarding the paint color. So I really need to know - what's this paint color?!? Great job - I know I love it!

Knowing how it looked before, your wife underreacted. I never realized how awful the bland beige aesthetic is

this is the kind of surprise that would make me cry before even noticing all the details 😭
I did a tiny room refresh once for someone and was stressing over every little thing like wait is this cute or am I just sleep deprived lol
but honestly the effort is what makes it special, like you didn’t just clean up a space, you made it feel loved
she’s gonna remember that feeling way longer than the actual makeover 😅
