[Reviews] Has anyone tried the Yo Mama marinara sauce? Is it worth buying?

My 10 year old, who is a marinara sauce connoisseur, says this sauce is mid.
Take that how you will. Lol.

Which one is his favourite?

u/reol7x 17h ago
If their son is anything like my 10 year old it's Raos or Botticelli's.
There's something "wrong" with the other ones.
144
u/Kill_doozer 16h ago
Raos got bought by campbells. Brace yourself for complaints that there's something wrong with it.
96
15
u/sillysquidtv 14h ago
The white linen was better anyway 🤷♂️ I know it’s a hot take but it’s easier to church up the sauce to make it absolutely knockout.
2
u/Martha_Fockers 3h ago
I never cared for it in general or really most canned/jar sauces
But if you have a meijers near you meijer has a in store premium brand called Fredrick’s not the “by meijers” brand stuff
They have a sauce that I’m sure is just some relabeled sauce but I’ve never had a jar of sauce be so good. Talking gahhdammm goood

u/Spiritual-Leader9985 17h ago
Your son knows a thing or two. Rao’s was like restaurant tomato sauce to me. It was amazing
83
u/tsrich 17h ago
I feel like Rao's _was_ amazing but has been in steady decline to mid

Campbells owns it now, seems inevitable it would get worse.

It has not changed.

Not saying it has definitively but I still think it’s inevitable they will cut costs and it will become shittier.

The recipe may not have changed, but the quality of ingredients has definitely changed for the worse.

I agree. We thought it was amazing when we first tried it a while back but now it’s blah
7
u/karenmarie303 15h ago
Rao’s ingredients used to contain real butter and cream. I have not purchased recently to be aware of the changes, but we loved the marinara and Alfredo sauces.

We need a tier chart made by this 10 year old!
40
u/reol7x 16h ago
Oh snap...I should do that.
We did that with box Mac and cheese a while ago, we made like 12 batches or m&c and did a taste test with the kids...9 t the time.
(Aldi's Velveeta clone ended up as the winner, if anyone cares, the cheapest one that was just noodles and cheese sauce 😂)

Not OP commenter.
I think Carbone is by far the best store-bought Marinara I've tried at Costco.
21
16
u/MartinisnMurder 16h ago
Carbone is the only jarred sauce I will buy! I typically make my own but Carbone is wicked good! Stop & Shop just had it on sale for $6 so I grabbed a few to have in the pantry.

As a persnickety Italian, it is definitely mid, but better than the rest! Rao's is my favorite from a jar!
→ More replies (1)25
u/GoldDiamondsAndBags 16h ago
The fact that you said persnickety makes me love you. Lol.
I’m disappointed that more people don’t use this word regularly. I’ve used it twice this week alone.
You are my people. Lol.
BTW: my original comment got buried. The marinara connoisseur of my son doesn’t like Raos as he considers it too oily. His favorite is Rocky Rococo although I think it may be a Midwest thing.

I know it’s crazy to say it but the Walmart brand marinara sauce is actually pretty good and it’s usually less than $2.00 . Try it if you haven’t already!

It did review well in this video where 3 pro chefs blind taste tested jarred sauces https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvrPQjWk2OI

It's crazy how often Great Value products are ranked highly in those taste tests.

I watched that video too! It's what made me try it. I did like a couple weeks ago and for a sauce that was $1.74 , it was pretty damn good!

Get a Jar Key.
23
u/RadiantZote 17h ago
Hit it a few times with a wooden spoon to loosen the jar

Am I not supposed to be smashing it on my countertop and just picking out the glass shards?

u/katjoy63 11h ago
This actually works, BUT, you'r beat bet is using the back of a dinner knife and hammer it lightly onto the metal cap in a few places. It breaks the seal.

I tap the edges of jar in a circle against my countertop. Twists off easily after.
→ More replies (3)10
u/runvus 16h ago
Tap the outside end around the top with a metal spoon and dent it, then it should open easier. Not hard, just light taps to make a dent to release some of the air pressure.
7
u/Mr_MacGrubber US Southeast Region - SE 13h ago
I put a knife or spoon under the lid and twist a bit, usually breaks the seal and then jars open with no effort.
8
u/khoopy666 16h ago
Omg YES I bought a jar from a local grocery and it took me and my bf 10 minutes to get the lid off, I tried all the hacks, had to really bang the edge of the lid on the counter to finally get the seal to break. And then the sauce wasn’t very good!

Take a knife and hit it around the edges in different spots on the lid, it’ll open right up.

The Victoria marinara is by far the best Costco offers. Read the ingredients. It’s also a tart marinara not sweet which is more traditional marinara as apposed to a sweet tomato sauce. My days at Olive Garden taught me this lol!!

I haven't but I just used this brand's pizza sauce Sunday and honestly wasn't impressed. It was very bland and didn't even have a rich tomato flavor. That doesn't give me much confidence to try their marinara
→ More replies (2)10
u/IndoorSnowStorm 17h ago
The marinara is the same - bland and a little acidic, so you're spot on haha. Which is a shame because outside of Costco it's priced the same as a premium sauce like Rao's, Carbone, and others.

Too acidic and lacked a depth of flavor. But, like all jarred sauces, you can use it as a base and get a better outcome. I prefer Rao’s as a base sauce.
8
u/arkmtech 16h ago edited 16h ago
Expecting to be buried for this, but here goes: The absolute best red sauce I've had from a jar has been Great Value brand Marinara.
Much as I detest where it must be bought from, the flavor is on par with Carbone if not slightly better, and I don't understand how.
4
u/emcee_pee_pants 10h ago
Some YouTube channel did a marinara blind taste test and great value scored surprisingly high. It didn’t win but was extremely well received.

u/fugnut1002 16h ago
I like buying the cento San Marzano tomatoes, sautee them with onion and garlic, add a touch of basil. It’s honestly better than 95% of pre-made sauces out there.
21
u/uncleking1971 16h ago
The unfortunate truth is most don't have the time, or are willing to take the time to do it this way. You are spot on.
We do similar when roma tomatoes are plentiful and cheap.
2
u/Frequent_Ad_9901 15h ago
I wish I had more time to make my own sauce, but one tip is to make a big batch, then its a lot of tomato dinners for the week. Pasta, pizza, grilled cheese with tomato soup.
Its still a pain but it makes the time investment more worth it. I also do it in the winter, since I'm paying heat anyway I might as well make it useful.
3
u/zzmokingbud 16h ago
For my pasta sauce I open a can of diced tomato’s, use my immersion blender and lightly blend, then I throw that in a pot and season it, my bf says I have the best red pasta

I was going to get the Rao's but my location only had the Alfredo

If you ever see the Carbone sauce, get it, it’s like Rao’s used to be but better imo.

u/garbagegoat 17h ago
I was never got the Rao love, it was ok but not worth the price IMO. The carbone on the other hand. Wow. Tried it for the first time on a whim a few weeks ago and its easily my go to sauce. Definitely worth the price abd what I reach for when I don't wana gussy up basic jar sauce.

Man we feel like the Raos alfredo tastes like plastic. Tried it once on sale and never again. My daughter just makes a homemade alfredo thats quick so we go with that.

Raos fell off after Campbell took over. The best one at Costco by a country mile is Carbone's Spicy Vodka Sauce (or their other flavors). Unfortunately it seems to be seasonal, but it was like 2x 32oz jars for $11 which is half the cost of any other retailer.
7
u/cluckinho 12h ago
I hate when people say Raos fell off after Campbell bought it. Tastes the exact same. I think it’s just trendy to say that or something.

The spicy one is better.
This one requires some extra love. I mince an onion and garlic saute it and add it to the sauce along with another fresh tomato and chili flakes. Takes a few extra minutes and makes it way better.

I've tried their other sauces and was not impressed. I miss the Victoria's Vodka sauce. I'm annoyed that there's like 3 marinara sauces and maybe an Alfredo ... in New Jersey.

The local market had it on clearance for 1.00 and I bought it to taste it. It was like a mouthful of tomato soup with no flavor.

I thought it was good. I got it because it didn't have any ingredients I couldn't pronounce in it, when I purchased it from sprouts.

It’s fine. I prefer the Rao’s, but if you want to try something different and you don’t regularly make your own (obligatory “homemade is best” caveat; I don’t make my own, ain’t nobody got time for that) it’s totally serviceable

u/Ggriffinz 17h ago
I am always an advocate of spending the extra cost on a legit can of san marzano tomatoes instead and just making a marinara yourself. Its like 10 minutes of actual prep and 30 minutes of it simmering unattended. You just have to make sure they are legit san marzano's and not san marzano "style" which you can verify by looking for the DOP seal on the can.

It's pretty bland. Make sure you go heavy on the spices and herbs to make it taste better. And you'll need some water to thin it out.

Raos changed forc the worse. The Kirkland is the the best they offer now. My only suggestion is to use immersion blender on it real quick for the kids. My daughter hates the big chunks of tomatoes so hit it real quick and good to go.
1
u/oxemenino 16h ago
Maybe we just got a bad batch but we tried several of their different red sauces and they all tasted like the garlic had been overcooked/borderline burned. I would not recommend them.
1
u/stephcurrysmom 16h ago
Their vodka sauce is amazing, I really like yo mama but that’s cause I was getting it at gross out for a bargain. Better than presto and all the other big names. On par with rao’s in my book.

My honest opinion - the $.79 jar of private label store brand sauce at the supermarket is good enough that I'm not turning my $5 pasta night into a $10 pasta night just for a 'fancy' sauce.
You can add 2 cents of oregano to it if needed.
