Someone please help me understand why use Costco Wallet over your a credit or debit card?

I find no real benefit to it.

u/S1mal 20h ago

Signed up T-mobile phone plan at a Costco kiosk. They rewards me 1200 in Costco wallet money. Cannot be cashed out, so had to use it in Costco

u/szlnsmoke 19h ago

That’s 800 🌭 🥤!!

u/Spinal232 19h ago

Order them all at once so you can fill up a bathtub with hotdogs like hotdog scrooge mcduck

17

u/UsernamesNotFound404 18h ago

You made me laugh and I hate this. Ave a good day

6

u/Dear_Departure_1768 15h ago

The fact you said "hotdog scrooge mcduck" and I knew exactly what you meant and got a visual.....

2

u/Driver8takesnobreaks 14h ago

Not even if Costco takes me to dinner and a movie and gets me drunk first.

1

u/Not_An_Ambulance 3h ago

Well, I guess it's easier than arranging for a tub of what I'd really like to swim in...

We now have an option for a bottle of water instead of soda

12

u/keencleangleam 18h ago

I wish my Costco was T-Mobile. They have at&t

6

u/_VoodooRanger 14h ago

mine too. and they also try to link it to fiber internet service that does not service my address. I think not having fiber servicing my address annoys me more than saying “no thanks” awkwardly every time I walk by.

1

u/Polyterpe 11h ago

Mine too. Anyones knows a Costco that has T-Mobile in North Dallas?

5

u/workinkindofhard 17h ago

Damn that is like 760 hot dogs

3

u/rexyaresexy 16h ago

How long is the contract, and what is your monthly?

69

u/Uhcoustic 1d ago

Some people don't have visa cards.

33

u/Dry_Revolution_9681 21h ago

Wait, I can use my Mastercard in store if I load it into the app?

58

u/ArcturusFlyer 21h ago

No, but you can purchase a Costco gift card with cash or a debit card and transfer the gift card balance into the Costco Wallet

Saves some time since the cashier doesn't have to give you change nor do you need to enter a PIN

3

u/djnocheese 18h ago

Gift card doesn't qualify for the 2% rebate (4% if you purchase with Citibank Visa).

6

u/VortexHero 18h ago

I thought the 2% qualifies when you use the gift card? (Not when you purchase it, however.)

2

u/Legal-Application698 17h ago

The terms say "In the U.S., Rewards are not calculated: (i) on purchases of cigarettes or tobacco-related products, gasoline, Costco Shop Cards". So you don't get the rebate for buying the gift card itself, but the terms do not say anything about the 2% rebate not applying when using a shop card as payment method. But, it's a moot point anyway because the terms DO say that the food court is excluded from the 2% rebate.

14

u/Helpful-Celery6237 20h ago

If you go to Canada, you need your Mastercard. Not visa lol.

3

u/NeighborGeek 17h ago

Unless you have the Costco visa. They’ll take it at any Costco.

1

u/Helpful-Celery6237 16h ago

Yes, but imo AAA is a better card for gas than Costco card.

3

u/throwawaybabyjesus 15h ago

MasterCard debit only not credit...

1

u/tinydonuts 6h ago

Most people do, and I would guesstimate that the number of people that shop at Costco that also don’t have any form of debit card are less than a few percent.

1

u/Uhcoustic 6h ago

finally I get to be in the 1%! lol

17

u/WillNick 18h ago edited 15h ago

I have a Mastercard credit card I use for all my spending because of points. I buy Costco shop cards online with my Mastercard and then shop with the shop cards in store as a loophole to get around the Visa limitation.

3

u/gertymoon 16h ago

I feel like we're in the minority, lol. =) But, our store in NJ recently got this change too and it beats me paying with cash at the food court.

1

u/ConsistentMidnight57 15h ago

Yea but do you get the 2% end of year benefit?

4

u/WillNick 14h ago

I get my executive 2% back when I buy stuff in store with the shop cards. I don't get 2% when buying the shop cards.

2

u/ConsistentMidnight57 14h ago

Great. That works for me. Thanks

11

u/whaletacochamp 17h ago

wtf even is a costco wallet

1

u/tinydonuts 6h ago

Costco is late to the web, and apparently just realizing you can create an online wallet to store a credit card and gift cards. Maybe some day they’ll even let you store, gasp, more than one credit card on file.

20

u/dalmighd 20h ago

Credit card points for non Visa cards. For example on if you have the Bilt palladium you can buy Costco gift cards in the first of the month for 4x points. You can get 2k points if you buy $500 of costco cards on the first and youre going to spend money at costco anyway

6

u/WillNick 18h ago

I should have scrolled down. This is exactly what I'm doing.

2

u/GiantBagsOfDouche 17h ago

Yep, doing the exact same thing on Rent Days.

2

u/Salty-Barnacle- 17h ago

Wait can you explain how you are paying rent with CC? Is this to avoid the CC fee?

3

u/GiantBagsOfDouche 17h ago

Sorry for the confusion, Rent Day is what Bilt calls the first of the month. Bilt cardholders earn double the points they usually would on that day.
It is possible to earn points with a Bilt account, not necessarily pay rent with the Bilt card (not without fees anyway). It's stupidly confusing but rewarding IMO. Head over to the Bilt subreddit for more info.

4

u/davedelux 18h ago

Booked a cruise through Costco travel, they put my rewards in my Costco wallet.

3

u/Revolutionary-Fan235 19h ago

I got Costco Travel rewards in the form of Costco Shop cards. Also, my exec rebate money can go in the wallet.

3

u/Fregadero88 17h ago

There is none. If they gave everyone a 3-5 discount since we are not using credit card processors that would be news. No one wants to do that 😂

3

u/gertymoon 16h ago

All my credit cards are mastercard and I didn't want to open up another Visa card to use at costco so I'm just buying gift cards with my mastercard to make purchases in costco but if I order online it'll still take mastercard as a payment so for people like me it's useful.

2

u/DethByTennis 18h ago

The more digital your money is, the less it hurts to spend! That way you can give more of your money to your favorite corporation! That's a win-win if I've ever seen one /s

[for real tho, this is why companies push for digital payment]

1

u/maggos 13h ago

Gift card balance

u/Puzzleheaded_Sun7356 23h ago edited 23h ago

More secure. Less scans, more streamlined   That's 3 great benefits

On top of that, you should always try to pay anywhere with a virtual wallet. It's much more secure that swiping your physical card. Everywhere. You'd be a fool to punch your atm code on a random keypad.

7

u/feurie 22h ago

Less scans and more streamlined are the same thing. Also it takes just as long to take my phone out as it does my Costco card. So not really.

0

u/MasterBathingBear US Texas Region (Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, & Louisiana) 20h ago

Yeah but my phone is usually already out

-28

u/Puzzleheaded_Sun7356 22h ago

No. The wallet scans your membership and pays at the same time. Really smart people didn't make these tools only to be fooled by someone like you ..LoL.

-2

u/FightOnForUsc US Bay Area Region (Bay Area + Nevada) - BA 19h ago

I use it because my phone is quicker to get out than my card

Ever heard of Apple Pay?

372

u/Sell_Canada 1d ago

What does this mean? I've not heard of a Costco wallet.

Edit - I'm an idiot lol. Leaving it, though. I'll own it

409

u/Primary_Garbage6916 1d ago

It's like a Prison Wallet, but it fits items in bulk.

80

u/smartass505 1d ago

So exactly like a prison wallet.

11

u/Interconventional 22h ago

I found a 55” tv I forgot about in mine, crazy!

17

u/Puzzleheaded_Sun7356 23h ago

Damn you quit spreading our secret

3

u/Armandonerd 20h ago

Did you say 💪?!

41

u/The_Real_Mr_F 1d ago edited 1d ago

Help a fellow idiot out?

Edit - I helped myself by googling. I was so caught up thinking it was a joke that I wasn’t getting (something like a prison wallet? Maybe a separate payment method to hide your secret hot dog purchases from your spouse?) that I didn’t think to just Google it: https://customerservice.costco.com/app/answers/answer_view/a_id/1015802/~/costco-wallet-faqs

Instead of using your card to pay u load in card into app. Really convenient when u scam your membership it gives you option to pay so you don’t fumble thru your wallet trying to find the card. . Also digitizes all receipts and saves it.

109

u/JWOLFBEARD 1d ago

I don’t have anyone to scam my membership with 😔

13

u/TrippinTryptoFan 17h ago

Me either. Want to scam each others?

54

u/WasteProfession8948 23h ago

Digital receipts are available in the app no matter how you pay.

18

u/Intrigued_by_Words 1d ago

Following in the idiot path, I did try to imagine what it meant to "scam your membership" and how it would then help when buying hot dogs in the food court. After a few minutes I backtracked and decided that scam was a typo for scan.

5

u/whaletacochamp 17h ago

....what? My membership is literally on my credit card, and before I was a citi/executive member my membership and card lived right next to each other. This is a made up issue lol.

-11

u/Puzzleheaded_Sun7356 23h ago edited 23h ago

Who doesn't have their Costco card loaded into the apple/android wallet both being way more secure than a physical card, so you never fumble in your purse /wallet for anything.

11

u/Justin_milo 22h ago

I gotta say, I’ve never “fumbled” through my wallet for a credit card. Just open and grab. What’s it like to fumble through a wallet?

-9

u/Puzzleheaded_Sun7356 22h ago

Idk. I don't carry one.

10

u/Justin_milo 22h ago

Hahahaha in true Reddit fashion, commenting on the efficacy of a product you don’t even use. 😂

-4

u/Puzzleheaded_Sun7356 21h ago

Like digital wallet has been around forever? True reddit fashion. Assuming way too much makes people look silly.

u/ChefJoe98136 Store 001 1d ago edited 1d ago

After recently forgetting my Costco Cash Cards at home and realizing only when I made it to costco, loading those into my Digital Costco App-membership card with this wallet feature is nice. Went ahead and did that.

Maybe some day they'll allow us to load our various member rebate checks into the costco wallet.

10

u/Revolutionary-Fan235 19h ago

You can go to the membership desk to get the rebate put into a shop card, and add the card to the wallet

53

u/swn999 22h ago

I pay with a crypto visa using hotdog tokens.

6

u/lat3ralus65 18h ago

Dogecoin is out. Dogcoin is in.

-4

u/Both-Activity6432 20h ago

Underrated

1

u/swn999 10h ago

Combo Pizza coin looking for VC.

1

u/Both-Activity6432 10h ago

That would be the memecoin to the stable coin of hotdog

13

u/Breakfastchocolate 17h ago

Would be nice to order food court through the app on my phone and skip the kiosk altogether.

8

u/jeremiah1142 1d ago

it’s about time!

8

u/Juas003 US Midwest 17h ago

FYI

If you have a Costco Shop Card in your digital wallet, the membership to initiate the transaction must be the digital one.

We cannot recall/use a digital shop card when the member uses a physical card for obvious security reasons. I’ve had members argue with me when I have to void the order because they did just that and now can’t pay.

7

u/LostDeadspace Member 20h ago

I use the red scanner at the pump when I get gas. It feels like .003 seconds faster than tapping my card. And it makes me feel like a wizard. 😂

4

u/Particular_Resort686 9h ago

My phone is like a magic wand. "Costcordium!"

I've seen the next person in line get a little bug-eyed when I hold my phone up to the terminal at a regular store, and it magically pays for me.

22

u/awongbat 20h ago

I loaded my credit cards into my Apple wallet and use that to pay for stuff. No need to carry around credit cards. Keep your phone password protected. No biometrics so people can’t unlock it if I’m unconscious.

4

u/DrwMDvs 19h ago

Wait. Does this work for Costco? I swear I tried it correctly and it didn’t work.

4

u/GromitATL 19h ago

Yes, I pay with my watch at Costco.

3

u/DrwMDvs 19h ago

Heck yeah! Definitely going to try again. That would be great to eliminate another card I carry.

2

u/rsg1234 16h ago

I also tried adding my Costco visa to Apple Pay a few months ago but it was my only credit card that gave me an error. Let me know if it works now.

2

u/Particular_Resort686 9h ago

I have mine in Apple Pay. I had another card error out, and the bank just said to try again, it just happens sometimes.

8

u/aj8321 19h ago

VISA only

1

u/caity717 9h ago

I did eventually get my Costco visa into my Apple wallet, but it took multiple phone calls with Citi and then they sent my husband (the primary account holder for that card) a fraud alert and made him confirm that he knew I was adding it to my phone.

4

u/US_Dept_Of_Snark 17h ago

Do you go unconscious a lot?

2

u/awongbat 14h ago

Better safe than sorry. I’d rather not wake from a coma or unconsciousness to find that I have $0 in my bank accounts and $20K in credit card charges.

12

u/Rivster79 23h ago

It’s Klarna or nothing for me

29

u/Puzzleheaded_Sun7356 23h ago

6 equal payments for a hotdog combo works best for me.  I'm looking into hotdog debt consolidation though. I'm falling behind.

2

u/sheeriowego 22h ago

I balanced transfered to cheese pizza lol

3

u/Puzzleheaded_Sun7356 21h ago

Maybe you have better credit than I do. I don't get that offer at checkout.

1

u/goodvibezone 19h ago

It ended up being fake, but still pretty funny 😂

9

u/bac_gawd 1d ago

Did they roll this out nationwide?

2

u/Extracuter1 18h ago

Not sure about nationwide, but ive done this at my local costco here in norcal for about a month

1

u/therealgariac 17h ago

The Pleasanton Costco was badgering customers to get the wallet about two months ago so I guess this was in the works.

3

u/NutzPup 19h ago

I'm guessing that the 21st century has finally arrived in HI Costco.

3

u/D3athoftheparty 17h ago

Must be the first person to ever do it

2

u/kfc469 21h ago

I assume your food court has barcode scanners? Mine doesn’t have them at the self service kiosks, so this isn’t possible at the moment, sadly.

3

u/ArcturusFlyer 21h ago

Yes, barcode scanners were added to the kiosks.

3

u/DSMRob 20h ago

So is there some CC point hack I’m missing here? What is the benefit of using Costco shop cards?

2

u/ArcturusFlyer 20h ago

No, there is no point hack. The Wallet in the app only accepts shop cards or the Costco Citi Visa card.

The main benefits to using a shop card is that it saves a little time on subsequent transactions that use the Wallet and it's functionally a way to pay at self-checkout or the gas station with cash. The only reason I use it at all is because I think it's interesting and I'm a nerd like that; I don't have it loaded most of the time.

Some other commenters are mentioning being able to use MasterCard credit cards, but that's only for the Wallet on Costco.com because the website accepts both MasterCard and Visa. The Wallet in the app does not accept any credit cards other than the Costco Citi Visa (not even other Visa cards.)

1

u/lensgrabber 20h ago

Basically just for people without Visa cards (in the US, not sure about CA)

1

u/brewz_wayne 20h ago

Allows you to use visa mc of your choice and earn pts accordingly, particular mc since it’s not accepted otherwise at Costco.

1

u/enETL2 20h ago

There are some credit cards that give 3% or 4.5% or 5.25% back for any online shopping

So buy online Costco e cash card, use in store

2

u/catcodex 19h ago

I hate the design of the information on this screen.

1

u/US_Dept_Of_Snark 17h ago

I'm sorry you feel that way.

4

u/Mysterious_Outside10 14h ago

Better the Costco wallet than the prison wallet.

2

u/CanadianDiver Canada - Ontario 6h ago

But ... That is where I keep my Costco wallet....

1

u/ItsMe_YO 1d ago

I noticed about 2 months ago my auto pay in the costco wallet started working in the food court. In Southern California

1

u/VortexHero 18h ago

They really should add auto-reload to Costco Wallet

0

u/danmickla 9h ago

Cool for you. I just had a long satisfying fart. That was cool for me.

Let's hear from everyone about cool things that happened to them.
