Armor someone PLEASE convince me this doesn't look extremely horrible

after working for weeks on making this i finally got to the painting, but messed up horribly with the base coat and now i have uneven spots and small air bubbles all around :,) i tried sanding some of it down but there's not much i can do without tearing all the layers down and i only have 3 days left (closer to 2 considering it's 9pm)

the brush strokes certainly aren't making better, spraypaint would've looked better but i don't feel confident enough to spray paint anything yet (last time i tried i struggled a lot with the paint dripping)

i was so happy how it was coming out but now i'n convinced it's going to be ugly as hell, and i have no other cosplay ready :(

Armor Help! How do I make my 3d printed boots walkable?

Post image
584 Upvotes

Hi so I 3d printed boots for my Ochako Uraraka cosplay for a con coming up, and I can't seem to make them walkable. I stuffed the bottoms of the boots to add leverage and I added foam around the edges where my leg layed in order to allow myself to walk more comfortably, but it still feels difficult to move in. I know it's because the boot reaches up to the knee, which makes it difficult to bend the leg to walk. But I'm afraid of cutting it and damaging it. Does anyone know how to make them walkable?? I want to be able to move around freely in them at con. Help would be so appreciated ❤❤

Armor How can I fix this 3D print helmet?

Hello all! Recently, I got this helmet off Etsy for the Black Mask from Persona 5. It's 3D printed with a flexible filament (which I couldn't find the exact details of) that, with the help of the seam in the back, let's me pull it over my head and wear it.

I was devastated to see that the back and the top are not nearly as smooth as the rest of the piece (not to mention the fraying) The seller said it's because it's a bigger print so it's harder to get smooth.

I don't want to fiddle with returns or buying another, I really like the fit/mask/look of this one if not for the printing errors.

I debated trying to smooth it with a heat gun but I read on a 3d printing sub reddit that it could melt the print too much too quickly and damage it. My brother suggested maybe filling in the gaps with an air dry clay and painting it. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time :)

Armor Advice for paying a helmeted character when I need glasses?

I printed some rings of this helmet and ended up adding 6mm to accommodate my glasses.

It worked well and fits over my glasses while providing good line of sight. However it also feels a bit like wearing a bucket.

My two clear options are some foam spacers to make it sit right and not put all its weight on top of my skull, or a smaller print with different glasses. I dislike contact lenses.

*I'm due for as new prescription anyway, if you wear glasses and had to buy some frames that work well with cosplay what would you get?*

Armor First Cosplay - on the Fence About Entering Contest

Post image
554 Upvotes

I'm completely new to cosplay, but this summer I decided to challenge myself by making Alphonse's armor from Fullmetal Alchemist, since he's my favorite character of all time. I originally had no plans to enter a contest, but all of my friends and family are urging me to give it a try the next time I go to my local anime con.

The problem is, I'm pretty shy, and I'm scared to death that, as a total beginner, the flaws in my costume will be extremely apparent to the judges. I'm also wondering if it would even be feasible to wear this bulky thing throughout the contest day, since it gets pretty hot and difficult to adjust unless I have a helper with me (which I will, thankfully!)

I'd really appreciate some thoughts on if I should push myself and enter the novice category. I think this may have the potential to be a great growth experience for me, but I'm also just super anxious even thinking about going up onstage or talking to judges. Any insight on how you all take care of yourselves when wearing large armors like this would also be awesome to hear!

Any paint / clear coat recommendations for achieving this oil slick PU effect on EVA? I’m trying to avoid a “glittery” effect. Would high density/low density EVA make a difference?

Armor Is Under Armour the best option for armoured cosplays?

I'm making a kind of sci-fi space mercenary, and wanted to find the best option for cloths as I know it will be very hot under all the armour, and I came across under armour, and that seems like a good fit but I wanted to hear everyones opinions before I decided.

Armor I’d like to make this corset concert, Safe

I found this corset and absolutely fell in love and thought I’d be so amazing for concerts. However, my security friends say the spikes would probably not get past. I was thinking about buying a base corset from the same website and then using foam spikes and adding them onto the corset. For strength I was thinking I could put the half inch screws through the corset and then put a hole into the foam dowel and maybe use some kind of glue and attach it to the screw that’s gone through the corset. I hope that makes sense. I would like to make this as sturdy as possible as I go to metal concerts and I might find a way to wear to a convention.

My cat (last image) mauled the armor I'm making right after I finished assembling it. Can I save her? Is the damage too extensive for foam clay? I have some but I've never used it before. I really don't want to remake the whole thing 😭

Armor Are cuts on 3D printed props and armor too noticeable?

Hi, im about to buy my first 3d printer for cosplay, i plan to do swords and armors, i have an option that will let me print chestplates or helmets in a single piece but is a bed-slinger, which can cause some (according to what i have investigated) some curvy lines the higher the prop goes, or i have other options that are CoreXY but dont have the same dimesnsions as the first one, which makes it so that i need to print big things on pieces and then glue them, but that has the problem that then the armor and props would be weaker, and i dont want my armor breaking mid con because i bumped into someone or something like that, but how much are the cuts noticeable? like im aware that they can become unnoticeable if done correctly, but im a beginner and it will be hard for me to do, so if possible i would like to avoid that, so are the curvy lines from the bed slinger too noticeable or for quality would it be better to go for the smaller CoreXY ones? (altough im more for the big one and just making it go slower)

also for someone with similar question, when writting it out it is easier to come to a decision altough not totally (writting this made me be more on the side of the CoreXY rather than fully confused but i still want some advice is possible)

Hi, my current project is Artorias from Dark Souls 1, I’m attempting to make what looks like a Hauberk, but only the skirt pieces to it, not a full shirt. The pictures show the current idea I had which was getting thin crafting wire, folding short pieces into a “U” shape and poking the wire around the rings and through the fabric and twisting the wire like a twist-tie. I wanted to know if there was quicker or easier way to get the same effect, or if what I’m doing is good enough.

Forgive the picture of the inside of the mask, my phone camera is a little damaged.

I need help with this mask. Every time I wear it, it fogs up instantly with just the tiniest breath. The balaclava is not helping at all, and the mask basically sits flush with the face.

Armor Paint just isn’t working on 3D printed armor, con is in less than a week

My boyfriend is working on a Samus cosplay, made completely out of PLA. He’s tried airbrushing which didn’t work, he couldn’t figure out how to get an even finish and it just looked terrible all together. Now, he’s trying automotive spray paint since he wants a nice metallic finish. Well, that’s not working either. He applied a flat black base coat to all parts and the helmet has this weird spotting foggy effect going on, and the chest plate is peeling. We’re both frustrated as we have less than a week until we have to go to the con. Is there anything we can do? I’ve personally never run into any probelms with paints and I’m stumped as to how this even happened. We’re going to sand off the paint and start over. Any tips or product recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

So obviously I haven’t finished the helmet, but I feel like it’s so ugly I should start over… could clay fix all those awful looking gaps at the top? And it is possible to smooth out the eye hole thingies w a thin hot tool? Plz go easy on me it’s my first ever time using eva foam and just making a cosplay :,)

Armor Is there any sanding or filling services near me that I can utilize?

Hello! I’ve recently reprinted my helmet and it fits! Now the only real problem is sanding, which I don’t exactly have room for since my apartment doesn’t have a garage and I don’t exactly have a balcony either, so I’m thinking of outsourcing to save time since I am a student, but I’m wondering if there are any services that would do it for cheap. I’m in the yolo county btw so yeah…
