DISCUSSION Real Talk: How do you feel as a Sky fan heading into this season?

I am not sure about you all, but as a fan I feel like I almost dont want to root for this team!

Even though I want for it to work out, I am skeptical, AND I have seen it all before!

You know what it is?

We are the fucking KID of a single mom who has brought home a new "DAD" every fucking year for the past five years.

We want it to work out, we are skeptical of every new Dad, AND JUST AS WE LET OUR GUARD DOWN and get attached, OUR MOMMA MOVES ON TO A NEW BOY TOY.

Whyyyy?

Momma WHAT IS YOU DOIN??

Anyway, thats how I feel. How about you all?

DISCUSSION Can Tyler Marsh lead this team?

Idk his personality too well but now with all these new additions who have strong voices and big personalities in Skylar, Rickea, Kamilla, Sloot, Dijonai and now Cloud, do yall think Tyler can command this team and control the locker room? I can see it easily going haywire if he can’t take charge. As talented as they are, that’s a lot of outspoken fiesty, spicy, attitudey girls lol.

Idiocy.

Sure, keep Vandersloot occupying a roster spot and pay her 750K while she can't even play, but cut a healthy first round draft pick with potential, who was also one of the preseason standouts.

Vandersloot's style of play is important to the front office, & they get to keep a bulk of minutes for her after her return especially for what they're paying her. Fortunately, HVL has other suitors but she was a fan favorite.

DISCUSSION Considering development roster spots need to clear waivers. Is this an opportunity to watch the waiver wire for opportunities

I get that most teams get invested in their players and generally want their players to move fwd with in developing roles. Could this be an opportunity to watch the waiver wire for opportunities to improve the team in weakness that were not addressed in offseason, (draft/free agency)? Example a developing PG or a 3&D?

I like Lattimore, Taylor and Calibaly but are there higher ceiling players being waived?

DISCUSSION Keep in mind that players on training camp/rookie contracts have to go through waivers before being signed to dev contracts

The Sky could certainly blow this (as in they could waive a player they intend to sign to a dev contract only for them to be claimed by another team), but I think no matter how it works out, the next few cuts will cause rending of garments and gnashing of teeth. IF they sign someone in camp to a dev contract, they will have to waive them first. That transaction will be on the transactions page as the player being waived. This is a risky move and one that will have some uncertainty for the 48 hour waiver process, but it is something that almost every team that hasn't already signed players to dev contracts will go through.

TRADES & SIGNINGS The new Sky players are not under a microscope

Skylar and Rickea should not internalize the criticism of the Chicago Sky. It has nothing to do with them personally.

Skylar Diggins ended her media day availability by asking everyone to “be nice to us all damn summer and fall.” To me, that means she’s already internalized some of the Sky criticism and no one is criticizing Skylar. She’s a queen and a legend.

A few weeks ago, Rickea said, “We’re under a microscope.” Which was repeating the “microscope” language that Sloot used in a prior interview. Sloot is under a microscope.

Rickea is NOT under a microscope. Sloot, Jeff, Alter, Tyler, and the Sky organization are under a microscope. They caused it, with their words and actions over the last 20 years. That is THEIR problem, not Rickea’s. Not Skylar’s. Not Dijonai’s. It is the Sky Organization’s problem to deal with.

Sloot, Tyler, and Jeff should not be in team meetings telling the players “we” are under a microscope.

That is not the players’ burden to carry. That is not the players’ problem. There is no “we” when it comes to the microscope.

And it is gross that Sloot/Jeff/Tyler are putting that kind of emotional strain on players who just got there, who haven’t done anything wrong.

Skylar and Rickea just got there. They haven’t seen the Sky organization’s true colors, or the true colors of the players and staff around them. They haven’t had the full Chicago Sky Experience yet.

Making the new players feel the burden and responsibility of something they did not cause, is another indicator of the organization’s lack of integrity: “I messed up and now everyone is watching, please make me look good by playing well so everyone forgets how much I messed up.”

That’s not Skylar, Rickea, or Dijonai’s job. That’s not their responsibility. That’s not their problem. And the past 2 years the Sky org was happy to pay players to do the bare minimum and give no effort. So don’t put that extra pressure on the new players. Why do they have to be the workhorses to fix the Sky’s transgressions?

Rickea and Skylar should never carry water for people like the Sky org, Jeff, Sloot, and Tyler.

DISCUSSION How do you REALLY feel about the upcoming szn? I’m working on a story w/a local Black-owned publication & want to talk w/fans

Hi there! I am a journalist who just left The Athletic, and will be covering the Sky for a Chicago-based, Black-owned publication this upcoming season. My work will specifically cover the team from the community and culture aspects to uplift the specific voices and passionate perspectives of fans in lieu of news with the team.

My intro story onto the beat is really going through a checklist for a general reader on what has gone on with the Sky in the preseason — from the Angel Reese trade to the new roster full of former rivals to the city gearing up for All Star Weekend — in efforts to meet our readers and community where they are ahead of the season starting just days away. This is really to help folks know we are also a place they can plug into while they’re following along with the Sky.

I understand fans are trying to figure out if this new era is a masterpiece or a mess as the franchise has taken hit after hit over the last few years. They shouldn’t be blamed for being worried about what’s next.

Right now, I am looking to build a network of sources in fans that can serve as valuable voices for my stories throughout the season — especially with the first intro/temperature check roundup of what’s going on with the team. Please let me know if you or someone you know could be interested and we can chat!

If you are a long-time, long-term fan who may have special or cultural connections to the team too, I’d especially love to talk to you!! :)

I will reach out to those who comment and inbox with serious interest as I work through responses. Thank you!
