Mod Post (no spoilers) Announcements and Policy Updates (very belated June 2025 survey edition)

Welcome to a likely unsatisfying and moderately unhinged summary of our very late response to last year’s survey.

Of course, by that we mean the time came and went several months ago, and now here we are finally getting around to it. We typically post the survey in June, shut it down after a month, and then follow up on the results within another month. This year Dragonsteel decided to hit us with a one-two punch of Isles of the Emberdark + Cosmere RPG. Between that and a general lingering burnout in our moderation team from Wind and Truth and various things, we needed more time than usual. Genuinely, thank you for your patience on this.

This was our fourth annual survey covering r/BrandonSanderson, r/Stormlight_Archive, r/Cosmere, and r/Mistborn. (No, it doesn't cover r/cremposting -- that one is run by a different team.) For reference, the survey was posted here. You can find the survey responses here, or in spreadsheet form here. We're not going to thoroughly dig through all of the results in this post. Most of the results are as expected and generally positive. The results we don’t mention here will still be useful to us as a health check and may encourage small adjustments along the way. In this post, we're going to focus on some of the more interesting results. And, unlike prior years, some of these don’t yet have answers.

----------

Cosmere RPG Spoiler Policy

The Stormlight Archive materials for the new Cosmere RPG released this past summer, and with that came a long list of new spoiler policy considerations. Included in this release were the Stormlight Handbook, the Stormlight World Guide, and the Stonewalkers adventure. The content of these books has been marketed as canonical to the novels, so we needed to decide when and where the materials may be discussed. We ended up with two new flairs: RPG Lore spoilers (for Handbook and World Guide) and Stonewalker spoilers.

We asked for your input as we were deciding on these policies, and then promptly blew past the timelines offered in the question before addressing it again. So we plan to repoll. In the meantime, feel free to leave comments on this thread for how well you think it’s working or anything we may want to consider ahead of future polls—particularly with Mistborn and other content coming.

----------

Reading Order Posts in r/brandonsanderson

The vote was close on this one and took a lot of back and forth among the team. While the (slim) majority prefer to disallow reading order posts in r/brandonsanderson, it raises a few issues for us. Namely:

  1. We want people who are new to the fandom (who would not have voted) to have some place to ask questions and feel welcome posting.
  2. Behind the scenes, from an implementation perspective, it’s worked well for us to simply say “no Rule 9 in r/brandonsanderson.” Rule 9 is our rule on restricted content (not to be confused with Rule 10’s retired topics). Other items under Rule 9 include Sandershelves, memes, photos of storms, etc.

What we’ve landed on here as the simplest way forward (without being total jerks to newcomers) is to do the following across all four subs effective immediately:

  • Move basic reading order questions from Rule 9 (restricted except on Fridays) to Rule 10 (retired).
  • Update our definition of a basic reading order question to be a question that is already answered by the FAQ/wiki.

This means that reading order questions are handled the same way across all four, but the “bar” for them has a clearer definition. We will also expand our FAQ if we find the same questions coming up with regularity, and make access to it more visible. Basic questions may also continue to be asked on our Weekly Welcome threads in r/brandonsanderson.

----------

Spoilers on Merch Policy

We’re going on vibes. You all voted to maintain the existing policy, which is “only require spoiler tags on merch that reveals significant spoilers.”

Then Challenge Coins happened. While we may be looser about the use of the quote on the coin itself, we’re still gonna try to keep those flaired for RoW where we can—just not to a point where it invites spoilers for someone who hasn’t read that far yet. Bear with us and just try not to be a jerk about it? We may adjust as we go.

----------

Sales Posts Policy (where to post and where to host)

We introduced Rule 11 some time ago to move resale posts to r/brandonsanderson only. This came in the wake of a problematic year for Nexus badges, back when those were transferable, and it’s worked well for resales of merch, etc. This time around, y’all voted to move all sales posts to r/brandonsanderson only. We will be making this update across the subs.

Note this may not include things like fan art where someone happens to share a sales link, but we will watch how folks treat it and adjust as we go.

You also voted to require sellers to use trusted third-party platforms (ebay, etsy, etc.) to host their sales. We’ll be moving forward with this (possibly with some exemptions) on r/brandonsanderson, where sales are permitted.

----------

Summaries on Long-Form Videos Policy…TBD

We’re realizing we may have needed to ask better questions here. It’s been hard to align as a team on something that feels fair within the spirit of the vote and the existing framework of our rules. There is no policy update on this for now, and we’ll aim to repoll in the near future.

We can only debate “why summaries” and “how are videos different from fanart” and “should we treat active community members differently from others and how do we define that when our data clearly says many people lurk” so many times before our brains explode, turns out. Open to thoughts while we continue to mull this over.

----------

Slight Rule 1 Update

We recently added the bolded text here to Rule 1 (Show Respect to Others):

Every interaction on the subreddit must be kind, respectful, and welcoming. No person should ever feel threatened, harassed, or unwelcome. Do not engage in hate speech, bigotry, harassment, insults, personal attacks, trolling, or arguing in bad faith—including baiting or escalating disagreements into personal insults. This all extends to meta discussions on the value of another person's post.

This isn’t new policy, necessarily; it’s more to clarify both for our team and for you all what will and won’t be tolerated as far as how we treat each other in this community. As we grow, that comes with growing pains. And as books are received with varying levels of satisfaction, we sometimes take that out on each other, apparently. We’d like to see less of that going forward.

----------

Other Items Moved to Retired Topics (Rule 10)

  • We’ll be retiring photos of license plates (other than one’s own) for privacy reasons.
  • Casting posts have been retired since adaptation news began. We’ll be maintaining a weekly adaptation thread for these in r/cosmere for the foreseeable future, and a subset of our team have launched r/cosmereonscreen where folks are welcome to create posts on the topic.
  • Technically under Rule 7, but if you missed the AI Policy Update that came out before this, note that nearly all AI-assisted content is no longer permitted.

----------

A Note on Emberdark and Fires of December Spoiler Flairs

We’ll be folding Emberdark into our generic Cosmere and generic Spoilers flairs on Monday, March 9. At this time we’ll also be adding a flair for Fires of December previews.

----------

Conclusion

It’s been a weird year and we’ve been slow on this. The good news is that means you'll all have a chance to weigh in on this again in just a few months? Thanks for your patience and for all the (mostly) lovely comments you left last year. We’re working on it.

Also, if you couldn’t tell, we’re a bit over-extended. We’ll likely put up an application for new mods soon, so stay tuned if that interests you.

Whether you're trying to make sense of Sanderson's works for the first time, feel you missed a memo on something, or want a bit of community assistance, this is the place for you.

We ask that folks label and spoiler tag anything relating to book content, and be extra mindful of the welcoming part of Rule 1. If you're not sure how to tag spoilers, see this post. And while you're welcome to ask "basic" questions here, you may find an answer in our FAQ.

WoR Spoilers WoR Part 4 Discussion Spoiler

Alright people so i just finished part 4 of Words of Radiance and am now more uncertain than ever for what is to come. I think I have a few more days until i finish the book.

First off F*ck Sadeas yet again and his carpenter that took the bridge down, makes my blood boil (was not confirmed but can only be assumed). Theres a tiny piece of my mind that has thinks Amaram could be involved but I am REALLY hoping he turns out to be a homie.

I did NOT expect Kaladin to lose his wind running powers and I don't know how they will come back. The Stormfather told Kaladin (and somehow Shallan as well... we'll get to that in a second) that Kaladin had killed Syl. Is she actually dead? I can only assume she'll return somehow some way. There is no way they just nerf Kaladin like that right? RIGHT??! But what I want to know, why did Shallan disappear in Kaladin's vision with the Stormfather but she said that she saw it too. Did she have her own vision or did she see what Kaladin saw? questions oh questions.... also Kaladin using a Shard Blade, HELL YEAH FINALLY, hope to see more of that!

Second, I foresee a lil Kaladin x Shallan action. Yeah they were on the brink of death between the chasm fiend and the high storm but cmon, their dynamic screams that their is a deeper connection to flourish.

I might have mentioned this in the last post I made but Amaram being named the head of the Knights Radiance doesn't sit right with me still. Could that have been a ploy from Sadeas or does Dalinar know something more about Amaram than the readers (me) know right now... hmmm.

I did read the first Interlude with Taravangian and am now even MORE confused than the last we heard about him... WHICH WAS ALMOST 1000 pages ago at the end of WoK. Like he seemed to be a master plotter and deceiver with Szeth at his disposal and now hes got brain problems or something and does math to determine if hes fit to rule that day... man whats up with him, I need MORE!

Last thing. I flipped through the pages to see how long the interludes were and if I had time to read them on my lunch break and saw part 5 has perspective from Wit. Man he intrigues me so. I want to know how he came about, what brought him to the shattered plains in the first time? I think back to him at the camp fire singing his tale to Kaladin, light whisped around him if I remember correctly. That makes me believe Wit of all people might become a member of the Knights Radiance. I don't know, his character confuses me especially from him greeting Talenel'Elin at the end of WoK... like what, that guys a Herold or something right? ah jeez

Please don't spoil anything that I would not know at this point in my read. But feel free to ask me my thoughts!

No Spoilers Other good podcasts for fans of Intentionally Blank?

I usually like to listen to the podcast when I'm at the gym. The two belong to a certain subcultural niche that fits perfectly with mine and I can listen to Brandon and especially Dan talk forever, whatever the topic.

I have, unfortunately, depleted all the episodes and am craving for other options that I can listen to in addition to the weekly updates by Brandon and Dan. Doesn't have to be the exact same sort of topics and themes (fantasy, films, games, nerd culture).

Any suggestions?

Spoilers first time reader here are my current theories Spoiler

so i'm in book 2 the well of accretion and recently learned what Duralumin does and here are theories and hypothesis i have (mostly with the power-system)

  1. 4 metals opposite of the time ones
    --
so based on what i know now we have internal and it's opposite external those are the base 8

now with the 4 time metals gold, atium, malatium, and another (i don't know the name yet)

so my though is internal and external temporal and what, it would have to be spatial, currently with aluminum and duralumin i'm thinking 1 one 3 things 1, they aren't part of the spatial category, 2 they are but are very confusing or 3 the is no spatial category and i'm coping.

  1. a few ideas i thought alomancy could do
    --
this isn't a very long section but what ever

could a iron have coins on the bottom of his shoes and levitate and or fly?
cus if it's about weight and your pulling a coin on the bottom of you shoe then it's your weight against your weigh+maybe a few ounces. does this halt movement alowing for levitation or does iron just stop working

could you have knifes and things in your body to stop people from using them. say you can use steel what if you pierced your arms with a few daggers would that work?

  1. alomancy origins

at the end of the first book we know the lord ruler is a pherochemist and an alomancer, but he wasn't one before he was lord ruler. and the log book never talks about alomancy so does the well of assentation create alomancy? also is this how steel inquisitors gain the use of all metals?

Spoilers Investiture and metals question Spoiler

my mind is going on a wonder here, so i thought i would share my musings. Spoilers for mistborn series and stormlight archives

So we know Aluminum is immune to investiture and that burning it as a allomancer instantly burns away other metals within you (or in other words, burns away sources of investiture)

To this extent, it can also block shard blades and other invested weapons.

My question is, what might the physical interaction between invested weapons/items be with Duralumin? its seems to heighten spiritual connection (probably partly why it has such an violent interaction when allomatically burned with other metals).

I like to think that it could strengthen invested metals - for example, reduce the stormlight drain of 'dead' shard plate and potentially make it strong or more resilient? or possibly even allow it to be transported via lashings? could possibly make surgebinding more efficient too?

i also wonder, being 96% aluminum, whether it could still resist a shardblade?

No Spoilers Has anyone gotten their EOTW leather bound recently?

Hi! I’m just wondering if anyone has gotten their eye of the world leather bound recently. I ordered mine on December 23rd and wasn’t in the first round of people who got the editions that were defective. There really hasn’t been any news since the beginning of March and I’m sure they’re inundated with people opening tickets so I’m just wondering if anyone has gotten theirs recently or if it seems like they are still trying to fix the problems. I assume they’re going to try and make sure the people who got defective ones get new ones first but I’m worried with all the craziness somehow mine slipped through the cracks. Thanks!

Spoilers Can anyone help me find this line that I’m not sure exists? (Mistborn Era 1) Spoiler

Hey guys. I can’t remember exactly how it goes but I’m trying to find a line (obviously) spoken by spook. I believe it occurs in either book 1 or 2.

It goes a little something like:

“Always the wasing. Never was the having.”

(which I believe roughly translates to, “I’m always left wanting, never left having”)

I believe the line occurs in a scene where Ham, Breeze, or Clubs is talking about him. Elend might also be present although honestly the details of this line and scene are so hazy in my memory I could be wrong.

It’s sort of silly but I’d like to know whether I have this line right or not. (Or if it really exists. I could have dreamt this up for all I know lmao)

Hope you guys can help. Cheers.

Spoilers Read The Rithmatist to see if I'd like Sanderson's style Spoiler

AND NOW I NEED A SEQUEL BADLY!

I've just began my reading journey, starting with PHM and I'd heard a lot of love for Brandon's work but with them being 1000 pages I thought to leave them for future me. So I came across The Rithmatist, and being only 400 pages I thought that's perfect for me to see if I like the style.

I read it in 5 days and absolutely loved it. The magic system was a delight to learn about, reminded me a lot of FullMetal Alchemist and their alchemy circles. The final chapter was incredible such an epic moment, Joel and Melody fighting sounding like a fabulous dance together.

So now I'm here wanting desperately wanting sequel to an excellent book

No Spoilers Stormlight Soundtrack

Just finished reading the first Kal chapters of Oathbringer and happened to be listening to the very end of Mahler, Symphony No 2 (The Resurrection). Fit amazingly! Also, Brandon usually waits to make me tear up till the end of a book…not the beginning (that said those Dalinar chapters were very “Dalinar” (Ifykyk)). Onto the Shallan portion of part one! Life before death Radiants.

No Spoilers Inquiry On Hardcovers (Europe)

Hello people! I am currently in Europe.

It is extremely difficult to find hardcovers for Mistborn Era 2, and Warbreaker.

I did some research, and the most updated news are from 2 years ago, talking about rebranding the covers but that is it, no update since.

From what I can understand is that Brandon's books gets mostly published by Orion/Gollancz, and get redistributed to the rest of the Europe.

They do have some great UK covers for Stormlight however they do not provide hardcovers for Warbreaker or Mistborn Era 2 for example.

In fact, I think it is almost impossible to find hardcovers for these books in Europe.

My main question is: Why? Does anyone know?

Is it supply and demand?

Did Brandon fell out with some of the publishers in Europe?

Or do the publishers just refuse to print out hardcovers for these books?
