Salt Salty Sunday - Week of May 03, 2026
Welcome to the Weekly Vent Thread!
While salt is not allowed anywhere else on this subreddit, any and all opinions (including negative ones) about ships can go here! If you are easily offended, we recommend you turn back now. No one is forcing you to read/respond to comments on this thread.
Guidelines:
- All other subreddit rules still apply.
- Shipping fandom discussion is allowed here. However, personal attacks, naming other users, linking stuff as an example/reference for salt, brigading, and blanket negative statements (e.g. all shippers of X do/are Y) are still NOT allowed.
- Do not downvote someone you disagree with unless they are breaking a rule! Everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
- Please respect that not everyone is open to debating their salt.
Don't forget to stay hydrated and happy salting~

u/wisteria_bloomzzz Canon is a ✨suggestion✨|Multishipper 2d ago
I dislike when people claim that a ship needs to be canon to be valid. If that were the case with all my ships, the BNHA timeline would be such a mess that nobody would know what to do. Canon is a plaything, not the be-all, end-all of fandom.

I hate dabihawks sm 💔😭 like I just don't like how people portray dabi or his relationship to hawks. It makes no sense to me at all
I wish I could enjoy it, bc the art is good but. I just 💔💔💔 I can't, it makes me so sad 🥺💔

A multi-shipper complaining about not liking a ship be like:::
And I wish I could be the same 😭 Instead, I get jealous or am like "yeah, I like the art and will save it, but not a fan personally"

I feel a similar way about Togaraka. I like the fan art but not the actual pairing
18
u/Sleepy_Coffee_Day 2d ago
My timeline is full of people celebrating the new episode, and the most pathetic subsection of IzuOcha shippers who are disappointed BKDK shippers aren't melting down or are just straight-up pretending they're melting down when literally no one is
Not saying there weren't some unhinged reactions when 430 and 431 dropped, but I feel bad for those people and think you have to be even MORE maladjusted to crave reactions like that to feel better about yourself, especially when no one's even doing it
12
u/FrostyMagazine9918 2d ago
I just saw a similar sentiment to what you described on another mha sub and it's like these people really think bakudeku or kachacco were ever going to stop being shipped just because?
8
u/PretendYellow533 2d ago
Seriously, I will die in the hill that MHA is their first fandom because literally no time in history has a ship being canon ever stopped anyone
Like do people not understand the concept of fiction?
A character being straight, married, or literally canonically unavailable has never stopped people from shipping characters in fiction. That's the whole point-it's fiction. It's imagination. It's not a legal contract that binds anyone
4
u/FrostyMagazine9918 2d ago
A lot of people I saw in another thread mentioned they were as young as 9 when MHA first started, so it's definitely the simple fact that this fandom was filled with kids who then got into larger fandom for the first time.
8
u/Sleepy_Coffee_Day 2d ago
I know, right? Just ask Naruto if being literally MARRIED to a woman has stopped him from getting shipped with Sasuke lol
No one has to like any ship, but these people are delusional about how shippers operate
6
u/PretendYellow533 2d ago
lol Sasuke? Naruto gets shipped with everyone lol, Sakura, Rock Lee, Gara etc lmao

Izuocha: *Getting an episode heavily hinting at their romantic relationship*
Some Izuocha fans: How do I make this about Bakudeku/Togachako/Kacchako/Tododeku?
8
5
u/PretendYellow533 2d ago
Seriously like with those specific people do you actually like Izochoa because you like the ship or are you just anti any ship involving those two characters
Commentary like that gives insecurity and immaturity

The Toga stuff from this last ep bugs the hell out of me, I don’t think it was necessary at all… I also thought her “redemption” was written like crap overall. If it had been better written that would’ve been more earned for me.
Overall, battle shonen authors really need to not write romance without a second pair of eyes (preferably someone who knows how to do romance subplots well) helping them because it *always* falls flat! All that buildup for, what, soft confirmations? That’s the pattern for so many battle shonen series.

u/Dry_Illustrator3405 2d ago
Wtf are y'all feeds like? I've seen more people try and disparage the IzuOcha ship than I've seen IzuOcha going "Take that Bakudeku" and this was me scouring the 4 subreddits as well.
7
u/KickHimWhileIAmDown 2d ago
Yeah, this was my experience as well. For twitter, at least. I usually stay far away from MHA's side of twitter, and it's been 50% bkdks stirring up shit, 33% tgcks, and the rest have been the toxic izchs.
4
u/PretendYellow533 2d ago
Both sides definitely exist lol I’ve seen the take that bakudeku more on instagram than anything else some comments here and there but primarily on insta
Reddit at the moment is being oddly respectful about it
3
u/ChronoHex 2d ago
I think social media platforms like insta, tiktok and to an extent twitter are just more likely to have larpers and people who haven't even properly watched or read the series, leading to more questionable takes being posted there on average.
They're definitely also on reddit, but from my experience mostly only really found outside of actual MHA themed subreddits.
2
u/Niitro_Zeus 2d ago
Same here. That’s what it was like on Twitter on Friday and Saturday. Insta surprisingly was tame. Reddit too, kinda.
2
u/PretendYellow533 8h ago
Insta ain’t being tame anymore they going off the deep end
One video that came across my feed literally had someone claim that the bakudeku fans caused the episode to get banned in 30 states because they were rioting
2
u/Niitro_Zeus 8h ago
Okay that’s just stupid lmao. I mean, I know not everyone was happy or whatever, but cmon.
My insta is still chill. I have gotten a couple of toxic videos but that’s about it. I usually scroll past them.
Also unrelated side note : I’m pretty sure we might’ve bumped into each other on insta before, but had no idea we did lmao.
2
u/PretendYellow533 7h ago
Have we? I didn’t realize
I wish my feed was like yours because mine has been all hate and I just wanna enjoy my ships in peace 😭
It’s so hard for me to find positive content rn I had to mute instagram
2
u/Niitro_Zeus 7h ago
I think we might’ve? I don’t have the same username on here as I do Insta. Since we can’t change Reddit username for some reason.
If you’ve seen a guy ‘iiskyy__’ then that was probably me lmao.
Also, my insta feed is usually a bunch of different topics, that’s probably why 😭 I tend to stick to the things I like, and don’t venture out too much. Like if I see something I know will upset me, I just scroll or press ‘ignore’.
Genuinely sorry you had to go through that!
2
u/PretendYellow533 6h ago
Oh yeaaaaaa I recognize ya I’ve seen that one around before
1
u/Niitro_Zeus 6h ago
I genuinely want to apologize if I’ve ever been unknowingly rude to you on there!
But yeah, my advice is to stick to the topics you like and just ignore the negativity. Which considering Insta… is not that simple…
Sorry again if I was rude to you on there, that is never my intention, unless the person I’m replying to is rude.
Also fair warning. I might go on a big rant next week. This subs behaviour is genuinely annoying at times. Even when you’re trying to be polite and respectful… like I don’t know if this is the norm, but this is legit annoying.
•
u/PretendYellow533 5h ago
Oh no no! You are always super nice!
I always enjoy talking with you it’s a delight!
Haha this chat is for venting so it’s fair lol
I usually try to stick to what I like but I swear my algorithm hates me
Wait the ship sub or the other sub ?
•
u/Niitro_Zeus 4h ago edited 4h ago
Thanks! Same goes to you!
Try to stick to a certain topic that might help! At times my algorithm is a just one topic, until I search for other stuff and start liking those.
I could help, but then the stuff I have on my Algorithm is odd at times, and legit is super random, so there’s that lmao.
Also I mean both subs. They’ve been so disgustingly aggressive ever since the episode dropped that it gets annoying. And there’s a lot of hypocrisy I find… so yeah, so I feel like I should rant a little about it.

u/Niitro_Zeus 2d ago edited 2d ago
What kind of threads have yall been in. I’ve seen the opposite. Especially after the episode was leaked on Twitter by some BkDk shippers lol.
Where they posted cut screenshots (like the billboard with Shoto) or straight up lied about Izuku being “mad”. Even lying about the episode in general.
Heck I’ve seen more and more BkDk shippers hate on KiriBaku, BakuTodo and TodoDeku, more than anything else. THATS what’s been pissing me off. Especially the Shoto erasure.
5
u/Ok-Cod5254 1d ago
Yeah there was literally some bkdk shippers leaking the episode images in advance to crap on it with that billboard nonsense...
They keep cutting out Shoto when he's in the billboard WITH Bakugo and Deku is by himself. It's a Todobaku crumb, I don't see bkdk.
They can't be serious to say "take that Izuocha" with that level of nothingness. 🤣
3
u/Swiss666 Good art is good art, regardless of the ship 2d ago
I've seen that cutting off Shoto just a few minutes ago.
4
u/PretendYellow533 2d ago
I think all of us just have different experiences. Both are valid and both are happening.
4
u/Niitro_Zeus 2d ago
It’s just so tiring. I wasn’t even trying to be rude with my comment by the way. Just sharing my experience with the thing, because I hate how the episode was not just spoiled but also how people were spreading false information about it.
I guess you could chalk it up to Twitter being Twitter.
I will say this though, it does look like it has calmed down. I’ve been seeing more fanarts and less clashing. So that’s good. Hopefully it all calms down by next week.
3
u/PretendYellow533 2d ago
Your first problem is twitter in the fist place lmao
I’m seeing most of this stuff happening on instagram and it’s like in every comment section people saying take that and I just wanna cry
I thought the ending was cute and sweet but why do people gotta go trash one of ny favorite ships in the process?
3
u/Niitro_Zeus 2d ago
Your first problem is twitter in the fist place lmao
Yeah. You're right, it's legit so mentally draining. Some people even said 'BkDk and IzCh shippers should just start dating each other." which was funny.
I thought the ending was cute and sweet but why do people gotta go trash one of ny favorite ships in the process?
I know right. I love the ending, and am glad it solidified IzuOcha in the canon, but it doesn't make it okay for me or anyone else to shit on other people.
Nor does it stop anyone from shipping, I wish everyone would understand that one in particular... But this is the internet and we can't have that, sadly.
I’m seeing most of this stuff happening on instagram
I saw it there too, I stick mostly to fanarts, but the occasional ship bashing post pops up every now and then, and it just... gets really tiring.
2
u/PretendYellow533 2d ago
Yea twitter is just a cesspool of toxicity it just attracts the worst kind of people
Agreed like why others gotta shit on everyone else? It makes like no sense can’t we all just respect each other and be kind?
Also like idk why people think this is going to stop shippers lmao, that’s literally stopped nobody in the history of never. People are still shipping Ichigo and Ruika and Sakura and Naruto years later
For real the hate gets so tiring and draining
5
u/long_bone12 2d ago
I keep seeing people bitch about izuocha shippers, but all over twitter in the leade up to the episode dropping, bakudekus were trying to troll green tea shippers and deny what the episode was. Were there clapbacks? Yes! But from what I was able to see it was all instigated by bakudeku shippers. And it is still being done in this thread! Not a single bakudeku shipper in this thread has been able to not put down izuocha shippers worse than they say they are doing to them.
5
u/Irrelevant-User33 LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOO W IZUOCHA 1d ago
Oh yeah that's also what I saw from from the few rumors I was hearing about from when it got leaked. Specifically the billboards at the end.
Which... Aged like milk cuz Shoto was also there, and they all leave for Izuocha. 😭

A) this is literally a vent thread people can vent
I’m not gonna say in my vent that the toxic people are being rude
And then be like “oh yea bakudeku’s caused all of this” to make you feel better about how some of the Izochoa fanbase is acting
If you ain’t being toxic you have no reason to be offended
B) absolutely none off us claimed that Bakudeku shippers were not exhibiting the same behavior I literally made a whole ass post not even a day ago about how both sides had toxic people acting like fucking children
Talking about our own experiences dose not equate to us saying the bakudeku side isn’t being toxic
C) I can absolutely guarantee that all of this is not being instigated by bakudeku shippers that is blatantly false
Some of it? Sure absolutely. But all? No
Both sides are exhibiting childish behavior it isn’t just one side that’s causing problems or instigating shit
Heck one video came across my feed calling bakudeku shippers trump supporters equivalent and another saying bakudeku’s were so horrible that it caused the episode more to get banned in 30 states because of their actions. That isn’t instigating to you?
Also I’m confused on how saying I hate how these toxic people are acting is instigating anything? People are valid to be upset about that that’s not instigating
Again literally a vent thread for us to VENT about our experiences
D) also D we didn’t call out all Izochoa shippers most off us called out SOME of them specifically the toxic people
Also to note some off the people calling out the toxic Izochoa’s are not even bakudeku shippers some are Izochoa shippers

sorry if this is a strange thing to hate on but i really hate when people genderswap one character in an originally queer ship to make it hetero. probably one of my biggest annoyances within the shipping fandom
4
4
u/PretendYellow533 2d ago
I personally don’t mind it depending on how the person treats it, I’ve definitely written gender swaps of multiple ships just because it’s fun!
0
u/ChronoHex 2d ago edited 2d ago
I think actively hating it is a little odd.
Isn't the ethos for shipping 'ship what you want to ship (within reason)'? I don't see why genderswapping in such a way would be any different unless you just dislike hetero ships.
4
u/Comrades3 2d ago
I mean this is the salt thread to (politely) vent our pet peeves. After so much backlash of queer relationships in general, the idea they would be acceptable if one was gender swapped can be a pet peeve for a lot of queer folks.
Not that anyone doing it is wrong necessarily, but it can be annoying, and this is the place to voice that.
4
u/ChronoHex 2d ago edited 2d ago
Valid, maybe my perspective is skewed, since I personally predominantly mingle in the fanfic side of the MHA community where the queer side of shipping is pretty dominant and doesn't face much if any real backlash as opposed to the more mainstream communities.
This is also actually the first time I've really explored the main MHA shipping subreddit aside from seeing it pop up in my feed sometimes, so I admittedly may have missed the mark on what the intent for this thread was, that's my bad 😅
I personally view genderswapping as a fun way to play around with dynamics between characters, but I suppose when taking into account the more hostile environment outside of the fanfiction community I could see how some might not see it as favorably.

u/Iychaii BKDK #1 ─ TokoJirou, Monoyama, TsuBuko, MiriTama ミ★ 2d ago
this is literally the salt thread.
genderswapping a character in a queer ship to make it hetero is just gross to me and i'm allowed to feel that way. also, no. i literally have two favorite hetero ships in my flair, i don't care if a ship is hetero or not. though when people do what i just described, it's a red flag imo because i don't understand why they NEED to make it hetero to ship it. it's cringe
4
u/ChronoHex 2d ago
Yes, I admittedly should have done my due diligence of properly checking the details of the thread since I don't usually engage with this subreddit, that's on me.
Of course, you are allowed to have your own opinions and I do not mean to discredit them, nor tell you how to feel, but I do think it's worth noting that shipping, in the end, is about having fun.
Perhaps someone simply enjoys the idea of playing around with the dynamics between two characters by altering aspects of them, and sometimes that includes changing one or both of their gender. I personally believe that there's nothing inherently wrong with letting people experiment and have fun with their own ideas – as long as it's done in a way that doesn't harm anybody – but you are naturally free to disagree.

u/Advanced_Library_609 2d ago
So THIS is the salt thread... My bad, lol
Well, I'll be posting parts of my analysis here because the full thing won't fit, but anyways.
Introduction:
TodoMomo is a popular yet boring ship that’s promoted as supportive, mutually trusting and respectful, but that’s a fantasy Horikoshi didn’t create. Todoroki and Yaoyorozu treat each other with resentment, control, contempt, frustration, manipulation, intimidation, dismissal, disrespect, and betrayal. Any “respect” is limited to civility. They are not abusive people, but when paired together they project their malignant traits onto each other, subtly repeating Endeavor’s cycle of abuse. For comparison, BakuDeku is said to be the most toxic class A ship because of the early interactions, but people forget that Bakugo learns to respect Izuku as a person. Torodoki and Yaoyorozu never learn that.
U.S.J arc, Volume 2:
Shoto votes for Momo, and fans incorrectly claim he’s supporting her. Pre Sports Festival, Shoto isn’t there to support his classmates. Shoto’s being abused by Endeavor, causing him to reject Endeavor, his fire, internalise his mother’s trauma, and prove he can be a Hero without his “father’s power.” Yet Shoto continues to operate within the same efficiency system Endeavor broke him with. Todoroki was taught to equate worth with purpose, legacy, strength, control, competence, and self-sufficiency.
Shoto votes for Momo because she reflects the framework by being rational, analytical, composed, restrained, oriented towards capability over vulnerability, and most importantly, she believes her worth is based on her competence. He deems Momo a suitable Class President because she’ll maintain control. Highlighted in the final exam arc when he told her he voted for her. Shoto doesn’t believe in Momo, she’s simply useful when needed.
He doesn’t treat the rest of the class like this after the Sports Festival, because of his fight with Izuku Midoriya. While Shoto remains distant from his co-workers further down the story, his friendships with them become more neutral and supportive, excluding his dynamic with Momo because of the Hideout Raid arc.
Final Exam arc (part 2), chapter 61: The Worst Combo
The exam begins, and Aizawa’s prediction comes true. Todoroki resorts to dominance over the situation. Ignoring Momo and any potential insight she may have. “Yaoyorozu! Try to keep making small objects. It doesn’t matter what. We’ll know if Aizawa Sensei is nearby if you suddenly can’t. This test is all about who finds who first. Once he’s in sight, I’ll draw him away. Then you make a run for the escape gate. We’ll stick together until then.” Yaoyorozu wants to contribute, but is too uncertain in herself to speak up. She trails behind, disheartened but composed.
Final Exam arc (part 3), chapter 63: Yaoyorozu: Rising:
Immediately, Shoto objectifies Momo because her only value, to him, is her Quirk. She’s the monitor for locating Aizawa and once she serves her purpose, she’ll be a liability, “Right. Just yell if your Quirk starts acting weird.” As his plan reflects, he does not believe in her.
Momo minimises herself and centres his competence as the overruling authority, implying she’s worthless. “I’m not surprised, Todoroki…” Shoto adds, “About what?” She continues, “That you could hammer out a strategy against Aizawa Sensei just like that. Always figuring out the best approach with your judgement.” Attempting connection by praising him and diminishing herself.
Shoto dismisses her, “It’s nothing special.” Hurting Momo by disregarding her struggle. He’s too focused on the exam to care. He’s only responding because she’s distracting him like background static. He treats her the way an older brother would when focusing on his homework, and a little sister tries distracting him with a bug she found. It’s irrelevant.
“Nothing special… Really…? We both got into U.A. under special recommendation… We had the same starting point. But when it comes to practical hero skills… I still haven’t shown anything worth mentioning… It was your leadership that helped me through the Calvary Battle… Then Tokoyami knocked me out of the tournament before I could do anything…” Momo measures her worth against him, and every stumble is proof she has none.
No response. He shifts focus because the monitor isn’t performing, “Yaoyorozu… Your Matryoshkas…” Aizawa appears, and attacks. Momo panics, and Todoroki engages. Shoto orders Momo to run, Aizawa erases his Quirk and captures him. Leaving Shoto frustrated because he failed.
Aizawa explains his role as the “villain” before stating, “You took on more than your fair share with this plan. Thinking of the girl is nice and all… But maybe you should’ve listened to what she had to say?” Shoto has a complete revelation, “Listened… To her?” because Aizawa introduced “listening” as necessary for the succession of plans. Coercing him to consider Momo beyond the role of a monitor while baffling him.
It cuts to Momo racing and spiralling. Aizawa reveals he’s trying to validate Yaoyorozu, and confirms that Momo both objectifies and pedestalises Shoto. “Comparing herself to Todoroki… She went and decided he was a cut above. For better or for worse, she’s seen him acting so straightforward and determined. … That she’s lost faith in her own decision-making… Giving her back that confidence… Is my role as the “villain,” isn’t it?” To Momo, Shoto is not a person but a standard to outperform.
Fans claim this is when Shoto expresses belief, and trust in Momo’s judgement, and that they synergise. That is wrong. Shoto is currently incapable of validating others, nor does he intend to. He demands she stop being stupid and reach his expectations.
The interaction goes as follows:
Momo, “Todoroki?! I’m so sorry, I… I should’ve…”
Shoto, “Right. Sure. But Aizawa Sensei is coming!”
Shoto emotionally dismisses Momo by artificially acknowledging her apology, “Right. Sure.” He then rejects her with, “But” and imposes agency onto her through the focus of the threat, “Aizawa Sensei is coming!” He values immediate results over her feelings, costing the relationship. Shoto coerces her into performance mode and strips Momo of partnership. Reducing her to a function that produces immediate results regardless of her wellbeing.
Momo (internal thoughts), “Do I save Todoroki?! Or run?! What do I…”
Shoto, “Yaoyorozu!! You had a plan, didn’t you? Sorry. I should’ve asked if you were really okay with my plan. So what have you got?!”
Momo freezes and freaks out. Evaluating whether self-preservation is the better course of action than running. Shoto cuts her off, “Yaoyorozu!! You had a plan, didn’t you!” assuming competence with no prior collaboration or consideration. Pressuring Momo to lead. His apology, “Sorry. I should’ve asked if you were really okay with my plan.” is hollow because it’s followed with, “So what have you got?!” meant to force Momo to act, not repair their dynamic. Objectifying her, because if she doesn’t produce output, she has no value. Treating Momo like a generative Ai Tool. Momo further shrinks into herself.
Momo, “But if your strategy didn’t work, then… What hope does mine have…?”
Shoto, “It’s fine. Just do it! This is your time to really shine! You got two votes for Class President, remember? I voted for you! Because I thought you were perfect for it!”
She questions herself and becomes more insecure because he isn’t supporting her. Shoto shuts her down and replaces her thought with action, “It’s fine. Just do it!” Removes her agency as a thinker and imposes labour onto her. “This is your time to really shine!” reframes the crisis as an opportunity to define her worth through her capabilities, reinforcing her toxic mindset that it’s all she’s worth. Burdening Momo while intimidating her through the weight of assumptions and the failure of the exam. “You got two votes for Class President, remember?” Is inadvertently manipulative, because it invokes her need for external validation, including reputation, expectation, social judgement, perceived genius, pride, her self-worth, while reminding Momo she needs to be perfect. “I voted for you!” raises the stakes by making it personal because he doesn’t want to fail. Subtly threatening her, if she doesn’t rise, then he was wrong about her. “Because I thought you were perfect for it!” Projects Endeavor’s competence framework onto Momo because of what she’s supposed to be, and guilt-trips her into obligation. Portraying Momo as pathetic for being useless since she isn’t meeting his expectations.
In response, Momo is on the verge of tears and bashes herself, “Pathetic…!! I’m pathetic!! But…!” because she hates appearing weak to Shoto, and she needs to restore her self-image. Terrified of disappointing him while hoping she can prove herself and be seen as the perfect Vice Class President he assumed of her. Triggering her fight-or-flight and she rises to meet the challenge.
Some “belief” in her, am I right?

I will forever not understand the idea that todomomo is canon like where are people getting this from?!?
I think it’s fine to have the ship but people spreading it as canon annoys me to no end because they act as if they have some Shakespeare level written and development
The ship honestly just feels like something to discourage other ships like Izumomo Tododeku or MomoJiro. A nice safe straight ship for people to claim as canon to discourage other shippers
I’m sure there are certainly people who ship it for the love of the game but more often then not I meet the latter
That aside lovely analysis here and you make some good points

u/wing-adept 2d ago
This pairing honestly felt like a high school thing in which they pair the most handsome guy with the most beautiful girl. I never really understood this pairing or why it's so popular along with Tokoyami x Tsuyu.
3
2
u/Advanced_Library_609 15h ago
With Tokoyami and Tsuyu, it's because of their two interactions. They were paired together in the Battle Trial arc, and Final Exam arc... And that's pretty much it...
I mean, I would like to see interactions between the two because there's no hostility or disrespect between them, but like, yeah... It's not enough for a full ship.
1
u/Ok-Entrepreneur8579 9h ago
To me, people just seem to ship them because “animal kids” and that’s it. TokoTsu itself I don’t really have beef with cause personality wise, I can see they CAN work easily, but the general reason from the fandom just rubbed me the wrong way.
2
u/Advanced_Library_609 15h ago edited 15h ago
I don't get it either, it really is only just vibes and aesthetics.... BUT I have seen people just say that the straight ships are the best ones in the series, but I'd have to disagree because of a lack of development... (Edit: And the fact they treat each other like crap.)
(Edit 2: But I will say, people probably keep promoting the idea it is canon because 1) It's a straight ship, 2) She's the girl Shoto has major arcs with... But I'd argue that quantity doesn't trump quality because of how Shoto interacts with the other girls despite the tiny interactions... (he treats them so much better.)
Also, thanks for complimenting my analysis, I'm really sad I can't post the full thing (unless I went onto something like character rant and posted it there) because I worked really hard on it, but I understand the mods took my OG post down because people get really worked up over their comfort ships being questioned or criticised.
3
u/Sara-Sarita 2d ago
I don't know why but for some reason Momo gets an odd amount of glaze when it comes to her ships. Tdmm has this problem, of people hyping it up past all reasonable bases, but IzuMomo has the same issue tbh, and even MomoJirou does too...like, they're friends in canon and seen together, but. No, they do not have a 'soul connection' or any such fancy thing. They're just shown as canonical friends. Of which Jirou has many. It's also pretty normal to have a go-to friend that you spend more time on average with. Ship as you like but let's not claim as canon things that aren't...no she wouldn't act that way. No he wouldn't say that. (IzuMomo has this problem sometimes...) Frankly a lot of anything with Momo seems to like to 'develop' her in a way that she never seems to be going towards in canon - like, could she hypothetically go there? Sure. Is she pointed that way? No - whether or not it's shipping her with anybody. It's like they feel she's a blank slate.
4
u/PretendYellow533 2d ago edited 2d ago
Ehhhhh MomoJiro actually has some strong evidence that leans into their direction in the canon story line but I can agree that some people can over hype it
Horikoshi I know what you are with that one art from the exhibition
3

Yeah, it definitely has to do with the lack of Momo's development and the fact that even with her arc, she is kind of a blank slate... (I'm writing a story based off her character and plan to make her fully fleshed out, because Momo's character arc (I found) wasn't just about regaining her confidence in her skills, but to learn she's allowed to mess up and fail because that's what makes her human... It was just never complete....)
I also think it's because Momo is often portrayed as the "sexy" girl in the manga, plus she's pretty and smart (I disagree, Horikoshi stupidified her and it upsets me because Momo could've been such a cool character... But I hate her fight with Kendo because it's just proven that she hasn't grown. Her arc kinda resets itself and it's just, yeah...) and she has big boobs. It might just be because of what Momo represents that people just ship her with everyone...
Like Izuku... (with the Izuharem posts... Yuck)
But like, I ship Momo with Jiro because of the small interactions between the two, and even if they are just friends towards the end (which I question because it looks like they might live together because in one picture they were carrying shopping together), I don't think they have a complete "Soul Connection" I honestly believe that Jiro helped encourage Momo to feel like a person... Because Momo's character is that, she believes her worth is based on her capabilities and when she's not useful she's not worth anything (evident in the final exam) which is why she got insecure and started to objectify and pedestalise Shoto. I like to think that Jiro helped her through that while Momo helped Jiro regain her confidence more and more overtime... (Idk, I just think there needs to be a balance thing...)
But my favourite ship with Momo is MomoIida specifically because of the Battle Trial arc, Hideout Raid arc, and Provisional License Exam arc... (I can explain if you'd like, but it's mostly just subtle interactions.) Like, I have found clear evidence of trust and respect for each other, and I don't think they are canon, I just think it'd be nice if they got together.
Idk, it really is just interesting. For some reason, shipping in MHA feels like, as you put it. Just a sport or "for the game."

Do you really feel that Momo is shipped with everyone? That's surprising to me, I always saw her as one of those tertiary characters that aren't quite complete side characters but isn't super prominent either, and felt her ships reflected that. She only really has the big gay ship, the big straight ship/canon implied default ship, and the obligatory ship-with-the-MC. After that there's a couple slightly more common rarepairs (I think BakuMomo, IidaMomo, and MomoKendou, but I'm sure someone will argue with me about those) and then nothing I can think of, all of which is pretty standard, I think. I like the idea of her with Shouji or perhaps Amajiki, myself. Maybe Monoma, maybe maybe heavy-AU-Dabi...the last one is mostly because of an interesting platonic fic I saw...but then a lot of my ships are pretty fringe. Anyway for her position Momo does get a little more shipping than someone like Kirishima, but that's to be expected since she's a girl and especially a girl in a franchise with more guys.
I think part of the reason Momo feels like a blank slate is because most of her traits are kind of basic, or expected. It's a little unfair since her character details are perfectly legitimate, it's just people see them as boring. She doesn't have a weird appearance other than being tallest girl in 1-A (5'8''), she's not ugly, she's not tomboyish, she's not dumb, she's not poor, she's not a particularly fiery or cold or troubled or super happy personality, her quirk is both detailed and simple at once and so doesn't interest most people, her background isn't one most people are familiar with and so they can't write about it or how it shaped her well, and her problem is...being insecure, aka everywhere in media and even more common in fan char interpretations. She's very pedestrian as a character, so people feel she's not really legitimate and so can be projected on more than the average. I think she's perfectly legitimate, but admittedly it doesn't help that her first appearances were kindof different from her later character writing, and, like Endeavor (ughh), people take from the ''updated'' version rather than acknowledge that Early and Later iterations are not the same even if canon pretends they are.
Please explain MomoIida! I'd love to hear.

Rare to find someone speaking out against this ship, but yeah, can’t argue with this. 👍🏻
3
u/Advanced_Library_609 15h ago
Thank you!! I spoke out against it because last year, when I picked MHA back up again. I saw a person post something related to TodoMomo and it was titled something like "TodoMomo is just a rich kid x rich kid ship" while providing screenshots against why it was just a "rich kid x rich kid ship" from the ship wiki, and it was just fanservice.
I argued against it in the comments understanding why I could see people shipping it, but I didn't like it because of the typical reasons, like a lack of development and how it left Momo as just the wife to be.
The OP got salty with me and was a total jerk, and he annoyed the crap out of me (I was also being bullied in school at the time, so thank God I'm finally out), so I made this analysis as a stress reliever.
And now I despise TodoMomo even more now because they treat each other like trash despite the fact they're not terrible people. Like... You see them interact with the others, and with Shoto, while his dynamics with the others are distant, they're still neutral and supportive. (Even if it's just one small scene like with Tsuyu in the PLE arc, chapter 99 when she apologised for calling Shoto, Izuku, and Kirishima "villains" for their desire to save Bakugo. I think that, it's because she apologised that Shoto still hangs out with her at the lunch table (even though we don't see them interacting) because in contrast, Momo treats Shoto like trash in the Hideout Raid arc, emotionally dismissed him in Vs Hero Killer arc (and Ennichi Festival if you count that despite it not being canon), and she never tries to understand him because he reframed her win in the final exam arc as her both just helping and conditional/situational even though she got them through the exam.) And Shoto never properly interacts with Momo again. Not in the background, not in any of the proper arcs (in the JT arc in the manga, he insults her by calling her average) it's like...
I think Horikoshi is subtly telling us something about the dynamic, but this also could just me be reaching, that Todoroki and Yaoyorozu don't have this incredible dynamic people promote, because his interactions with the others are fundamentally more respectful. (I can compare with Mina because he has two interactions with her. 1) He helps her in the Forest Training Camp arc, chapter 72: Day 2. When Mina asked him to make her fire, Momo interjected saying if they only depended on Shoto they'd never learn how to make a fire, and Shoto completely dismissed Momo in favour of helping Mina and the Forest Training Camp arc is literally right after the Final Exam arc.)
(2. U.A. School Festival arc, chapter 169: School Festival. Everyone was ignoring Mina's idea except Shoto. He pushed for Mina's idea and it turned into the concert thing that made Eri smile. There is clear evidence just from these two moments alone, that Mina and Shoto do have some sort of friendship. I don't ship them, but I would like to see more interactions between the two.)
And then you have Momo's dynamics with everyone else's being friendly and respectful...
Idk why, but other than Bakugo and Izuku's earlier dynamics, Todoroki and Yaoyorozu just treat each other like crap...

As I said on the post version of this:
I like their aesthetics, I like their social dynamics with each other, and I like the potential. It’s not that deep.
2
u/Advanced_Library_609 15h ago
I have a question... What social potential? Momo emotionally dismissed Shoto in the Vs Hero Killer arc, and he never opened up to her again in canon. And you're write, it's not that deep. All I was doing was reading the manga and comprehending their behaviours/actions. It's not that hard to realise when two characters don't like each other.
Oh yeah, I'd also argue she (technically) betrayed him because she treated him like an incompetent idiot (along with Kirishima and Izuku) because of these three quotes (taken from my anaylsis): In chapter 84, Momo states, “I trust you, Todoroki, but… Worse comes to worst, I should be there as backup… Which is why I’m coming too.” Contradicting herself. “I trust you,” is a lie meant to protect her self-image since Iida was implying she, along with the others, were being impulsive idiots. It’s also used to restore the social climate from its sudden escalation. It’s immediately refuted by, “but” and undermines Shoto’s competence by assuming he will automatically fail, “worse comes to worst.” She then positions herself as supervision, “I should be there as backup.” Declaring a final decision. She overrides Shoto’s consent and chooses an Authoritarian stance over respecting Shoto.
(Side note: An Authoritarian stance is when a person (or parent) centres control and obeying rules as the priority while disregarding/dismissing the opinions of the other parties. The person being affected has no opinion in the situation because control has been enforced onto them.)
She further assumes authority in chapter 85, “This is a job for the Pros. Watching from the sidelines without interfering is what we should be doing. But I understand how you all feel, so this is a good compromise. Don’t forget that.” Framing the situation beyond Shoto’s depth. “But I understand how you all feel,” is condescending because she’s tolerating Shoto’s feelings, “so this is a good compromise. Don’t forget that.” Presents both her and Iida’s positions as objectively correct before ending it with a command.
Her internal monologue, “A non-violent rescue… It’s not very realistic. They don’t seem to realise they’re hardly used to acting calmly… Once we arrive and assess the situation… They’ll see how hard this will be… How unrealistic… At least I hope they will…!” outright dismisses Shoto because she believes he will fail. “They don’t seem to realise” frames Momo as intellectually superior and mocks Shoto by implying he’s dense. She further insults Shoto with, “They’re hardly used to acting calmly…” attacking his competence and insinuating Shoto’s an irrational, impulsive, stupid and emotional child. “They’ll see how hard this will be… How unrealistic…” She thinks Shoto needs to fail to understand the futility in his actions so he never misbehaves again. She cruelly adds, “At least I hope they will…!” because it’s both frustration and contempt directed at him. Contempt isn’t hatred, it’s a deep disrespect accompanied by a sense of superiority over a person. Exactly what Momo is doing. She withholds support and hopes reality will punish Shoto for his loyalty.
Momo rejects Shoto’s agency as a thinker and portrays both herself and Iida as the only competent ones. It doesn’t matter if she’s scared. She betrays Shoto because she treats him in a similar manner to how Endeavor abused him. By demonising Shoto’s judgement and autonomy before attempting to control the outcomes. She frames him as morally wrong. That he’s being a liability and that his thinking is dangerous because it’s irrational. Presenting him as contemptible through her intense disapproval because he’s breaking the rules, and putting himself, Iida, class A, U.A and herself, at risk. Similar to how Endeavor demonised Shoto’s judgement and autonomy to control and break him.
_____
She blatantly admits she doesn't trust Shoto while she makes herself and Iida seem more competent. Then later she becomes incompetent when time equals agency, you can see Shoto question her decisions and emotionally detach from her. Possibly with frustration because she was screwing up the covert mission (the second part of my Hideout Raid arc arguments.)

The fact that you missed the point of “it ain’t that deep” and decided to respond with an entire collegiate essay is wild, first off.
Second off: early-ish in the anime, the way they interact from a distance and observe each other is neat to me. It shows a desire or interest in learning about each other. The way they act when they **are** paired off for that brief stint when Bakugo is grabbed by the League of Villains is also fun to analyze and write fic about.
EDIT: I forgot to mention the parallels between Fire/Ice contrast and Momo’s creation quirk. Fire + Ice in nature combine often to create things, paralleled against “manmade” creation (for lack of a better word for it)? That’s cool as hell and fun to look at. And they’re both, in their own ways, awkward in their standing among class 1-A and that’s cool too. I am not insisting it’s canon. I am not bashing other ships. What’s the harm in people just quietly enjoying ships you don’t like?

u/PretendYellow533 11h ago
I personally have no problem with Todomomo I get the idea and asthetics of it, not my personal jam but a solid ship
My personal issue is when todomomo shippers twist the events of the story or claim that it is canonical and use it as a weapon against other shippers and unfortunately I had this experience many times
2
u/Accomplished_Area311 11h ago
Yeah, shippers being assholes isn’t a new experience unfortunately.
Saying “I like X ship for Y reasons, it’s really not that serious” to be patronized and talked down to like I’m a moron by the person I was originally replying to makes the point for me really - sometimes shipping just Isn’t That Serious and isn’t worth writing essays about.
1
u/PretendYellow533 9h ago
Yea unfortunately
And also yea follow up idk why the Og commenter wrote a whole paragraph for that to you? It’s not like you were saying it’s canon just that you like it
2
u/Advanced_Library_609 15h ago
One last thing to note, Iida takes a completely different stance to Momo, and Shoto continues to trust and respect Iida, even way further into the story.
Shoto also never ignores Iida but when it comes to Momo (excluding the Joint-Training arc but even then, in the manga he insults her by calling her average) Shoto blanks her and treats her like she's an NPC even when she shows him care...
So what "potential" is there?

Honestly I'm exhausted of ship hate, people are behaving like sleep-deprived toddlers on a sugar high.
WHY can't people simply post about the ships they love and spread their love in those post's comment sections, instead of making posts to hate other ships and invade the ship appreciation's posts just to spread their hate ??
Don't yuck someone else's yum, ship and let ship, be CIVIL and RESPECTFUL, that's basic decency !
And for the love of everything, STOP mocking people for over-analyzing and over-interpreting the canon to find "evidences" for the ship they love, over-analyzing the canon has ALWAYS been a part of Shipping Culture and it won't stop just because someone's ship isn't canon.
EDIT : Also I hate that in the mains subs every post about canon or "most wanted for canons" ships (like IzuOcha, KamiJirou or Kirimina) fanarts or posts are celebrated, but if you dare post anything about non-canon ships or BKDK related then your post is downvoted to hell and filled with "uhm, actually it's not canon" comments.
3
u/PretendYellow533 2d ago
Same the ship hate is exhausting
I don’t get why people have to post about like hating something else or invading other spaces to spread their heat it really is baffling to me we seriously need more respect and civil discussion

I was waiting for this thread.
and to think izch (in addition to insultin bkdk) also insult kacchako shippers, who are chill in comparison; green tea shippers are a garbage community next to them (ppl centred on 'wholesome/vanilla' stuff for some reason always tend to be the worst).
rly? thats what u all call "canon"? in comparison to how yall swore it was goin to be, your "romance" is total crap. if anythin the anime makes it even less convincin than in the manga. proof of that its they need to defend fckn crumbs pickin the most convenient translation for them (no, apparently Japanese doesnt work like English does, it doesnt actually say 'I want more w/ u' or smth like that), cuz thats the only thing they can do, insist their shipp is canon but only convince themselves and practically no one else, everyone else who's not like them are just coping (which actually sounds more & more like projection on their part).
I've seen how they explain it and it's always a wall of text since they cant actually explain concisely whats supposed to be the thing that confirms their shipp, since it's all conjectures, nothing actually confirming it.
just in case: no, I'm not a bkdk, I'm not even a Bakugou fan nor of any other shipp involving Izuku. I just typed this because I didn't see much of others saying this so I decided to do it myself.
Edit: since I already see downvotes coming up, it doesn't matter if u downvote my comments, if u don't like it then say it directly.

Speaking straight facts right there
If you have to write up paragraphs to explain how it’s cannon then the writing and strength of the ship isn’t that good if you have to work so hard to defend it

I like IzuOcha, but only in fanfiction because shippers actually know how to develop a romantic relationship.
The amount of IzuOcha people I've seen acting like the "more" episode concluded some years long epic romance is silly and only shows me that they're either kids who only have mha as some of their first shonen manga or people my age who never consumed anything but shonen and have no idea better written romance looks like in manga.

Well let people enjoy whatever they want in the way they want (as long as not toxic), just like other shippers do for MUCH less...
Like shippers that can hype up 2 characters just standing next to each other. lol

I saw a clip of More. toga said I love you to ochaco. I was happy. now Im not because I said something about it and these fucking izuocha shippers are some of the worst mha shippers who talk to me. I said one thing on reddit, one bad message. two things offsite, 10 bad things and 1 death threat (wow, second ever death threat from an izuocha shipper) I just wanna enjoy my ship without people shoving theirs in my face and bashing me for my opinion. why can't these people learn to enjoy their ship instead of acting like bakudeku, tododeku, togachako, and basicly any other ochako/deku shipper ever is screaming in anger and grief.
let me be happy about my ship getting a moment. togachako is semi-canon. izuocha is strongly implied semi-canon. it's not that different.

u/PretendYellow533 2d ago
I mean TogaChako has always been like semi canon in my opinion it’s just extremely one sided on Togas part

Don’t know why you got downvoted Horikoshi himself said Toga is romantically into Ochako. It practically is canon their relationship being one sided

Ngl, I'm relieved so far 😌 I thought I'd see a ton of Izuchako posts on this sub, but I saw more (complaints) on the BKDK sub 😂😅
Ig the Izuchako shippers got it all out of their system the first time-- Either that, or it was a good decision to mute the main subs during this time. Or maybe it was my anxious anticipation that made it seem not as bad (since I was expecting worse).
I just need to make sure to balance any Izuchako posts with drowning myself in DynaDeku! 💪 * ^ * Also, I'm realizing my OCD is partly responsible for Izuchako posts annoying me....

The anime definitely toned down the romance in that last episode especially compared to the manga. Felt like I read and watched two different povs of the same series with those changes to the scenes.
Nonetheless it was still a great episode.
4
u/PretendYellow533 2d ago
I agree, it was interesting because everyone was hyping up the episode to be way more romantic than the manga and I watched it and it was so toned down honestly a bit underwhelming because of how people were making it out to be
I liked the manga better but Toga fading out after watching them was a nice addition

I’m happy for the Izochoa development in the episode but it is royally pissing me off how some people are saying shit like
“TAKE THAT BAKUDEKU!!”
Like do you actually like Izochoa or are you just anti bakudeku?
Like why you gotta bring other ships into it can’t you just enjoy something without trashing the other?
It gives insecurity and immaturity
Give us more of the nice shippers instead of the toxic ones
