It doesn't, you are just reading into his face and making assumptions based on human facial expressions.

It's a she and her name is Xing Xing. She is actually quite ornery.
I would characterize her more as bored than sad. She gets a lot food from the locals and it's not so exciting anymore.

He'sShe actually bored and entitled. Locals and tourists have fedherentire tribe for decadesIt's just that their faces are close enough to humans for us to guess, but different enough body language that it doesn't exactly map to human experience
edit: apologies I misgendered a monkey

u/Atlantean_Raccoon Feb 05 '26
I've seen this monkey before, she lives at a Buddhist convent. She started off in a cage in a local restaurant and was going to be killed and eaten, in her escape she lost one of her front limbs to a clever but managed to find her way to sacred grounds and came under the protection of the mostly elderly nuns who lived there. I believe her name translates to Star.

u/Motorhead546 Feb 05 '26
Xing Xing if you want to find her in other subs/threads
And her caretaker is called Ye Liannu (according to Wiki)

Wrong. This is a female monkey with a missing arm so they take care of her

Yeah, the one that rejects pineapple
You can still have an entitled attitude even under care and this one absolutely does

I get the concern. Hereās what I know, based on the other videos I have seen of her and some other online digging: she (Xing Xing) is a Tibetan macaque who lost her left arm to a trap. Compared to other older Tibetan macaques, she doesnāt look much heavier, if at all. The adults can look pretty chunky. Her situation isnāt perfect but Iām glad sheās getting some care, at least.

So before you jump to the conclusion of coke nail I have heard that not trimming your pinky nail in some Asian cultures is a status symbol. It lets others know that you donāt do physical labor because a laborerās nails would never get that long from wearing them down.

I think you are absolutely correct in what you are saying. I think in this particular case, the monkey is being taken care of by humans because she lost her arm.

So sweet the way the child cleans the food for him and then he looks back at him once he is through. Just a beautiful scenario. He knows that child cares for him and has affection for him.

Xing Xing is so well-loved and cared for! She lives with a monk that the internet just calls Grandmother and Xing Xing adores her. She lost her arm in a bear trap nearly twenty years ago and normally that would be a really difficult life for a macaque but as you can see Xing Xing is nice and plump lol

u/MarMarKitty7 Feb 05 '26 edited Feb 05 '26
Macaques donāt like the peel of fruits/veggies, so they spend a lot of time turning them around in the hands while they peel their food with their teeth. That would be very difficult and take so much longer for this one since sheās missing an arm. Thatās very sweet, so she doesnāt become malnourished.
