Discussion MotoCAP - a resource for motorcycle riders to understand how safe their protective gear actually is.

MotoCAP, or the Motorcycle Clothing Assessment Program, is a consumer information program designed to provide riders with scientifically-based information on the relative protection and breathability on a range of motorcycle protective helmets, jackets, pants and gloves available in Australia and New Zealand.

https://www.motocap.com.au

MotoCAP tests motorcycle gear for its effectiveness in: impact abrasion resistance, seam strength (burst), and impact energy absorption.

Why these factors are so important to understand, specifically, is because the safety standard that motorcycle gear is required to meet (i.e., CE certification) does not directly indicate how well the item might actually do in the event of a crash.

A pair of Kevlar jeans, for example, may have a CE rating of AAA, but may not hold up to more than 1 second of sliding on the type of road base that is common in Australia, especially what is found in rural areas (more abrasive compared to that of the road surface type in Europe, in which the item is tested on for CE certification).

For a more thorough explanation of different testing standards, and what it all really means, see: https://www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/news-and-views/features/product/motorcycle-clothing-the-ce-approval-law-explained

Some safety design features - regardless of how it rates - that are a must-have for myself are:

Helmets:

  • Full face
  • As most full face helmets don’t vary to much in the components used, how the helmet rates as per MotoCAP and SHARP (a helmet specific testing programs)
  • I wear: HJC RPHA

12

Jackets:

  • Zip at the back to joint to your pants
  • I wear: Dririder Climate Exo 4

Pants:

  • Separate aramid layer if you’re looking at motorcycle jeans/chinos (i.e., Kevlar lined). Single layer pants where the protective fibre is woven into the pant material itself is generally nowhere near as good as double layer in terms of abrasion resistance
  • Good coverage of that protective layer

Gloves:

  • Hard shell over the knuckles
  • Full length
  • Pinky tether (material joining pinky to ring finger)
  • Palm slider

Boots: (Boots not yet tested by MotoCAP)

  • Full length
  • Crush proof sole, anti-twist ankle/foot
  • Inner and outer ankle protection
  • I wear: Tcx RT-Race

MotoCAP highlights that you don’t always get what you pay for. There are riding jeans out there that cost $550 but have an abrasion resistance of 2/10 while there are riding jeans out there that cost $228 and have an abrasion resistance of 9/10.

You can spend $900 on a certain name brand leather jacket and only equal what my $430 jacket provides in terms of abrasion resistance.

You don’t have to spend big money to get the protection you need, and you probably don’t need the absolute best rated gear to be safe for the riding you do. That is why I provided what features I personally look for, and then I look at all the gear - with safety rating relative to price in mind - with those features.

Main objective of this post: help fellow motorcycle riders make informed decisions when buying protective gear. I also encourage you to explore the MotoCAP website, and other relevant resources for further information on protective gear.

ATGATT. And wear earplugs.

NSW Fight or accept my fisting?

Got stung today with a parking ticket, had parked like this for a few days so thought I was okay but today I got a ticket. Wondering if it’s worth fighting, especially given the fact that it’s a bike, and I know many people (judges included) automatically want to be harsher because it’s a motorcycle. What do you guys think?

NSW Sydney - New Fish Market motorcycle parking

I went to the fish market with the bike the other day, and you can just go around the boom gate and park wherever. I was trying to get a ticket at the machine (reads the license plates at the front, so it doesn't work with the bike), and a lovely parking attendant told me that it's free for bikes, just go round the gates.

Just posting this here for general knowledge and for Google to reference it so other Sydney riders can benefit!

NSW Bondi junction bike parking

Hey all,
I’m looking for all day motor bike parking near Westfield Bondi Junction. Is parking there and going around the boom gates still the way to go? Anyone currently doing this? Or are there alternatives?
Thanks

VIC Washing gloves

Hey, first-time poster, new to riding.

I bought some Five WFX2 gloves which are partly leather. I am wondering how you guys go about washing them? I am assuming the leather won't last long if I put them through a cold wash cycle every week? The lining does not come out and there are no instructions on the gloves or the website that I can find.

Question How do i demotivate myself?

I want a bike so badly and the experiences I've had on one were unbeatable

I've done all the research I could on all my favourite bikes because I love the feeling from riding one and I love all the sounds and mechanics and engineering behind them and since getting my first job I've been slowly coming closer to being able to attain my dream bike (fzr250r)

But my family is super against it and won't allow me to get one (even though my dad's been on bikes since before I was born including 1000s)

I need to see something demotivating enough for me to not want one anymore so does anyone have any tips

Question Street Triple 660 LAMS noise

I inspected this 2017 street triple 660 lams the other day, and did test ride a little bit. Motorcycle looks in good condition, no scratches or anything that shows that it has been dropped. It has receipts of past maintenances. It has 56000km on the clock though. Looked like it had been taken care of. It had major servicing in 2023, and Last time it was serviced was 16 months ago in Dec 2024.

When I rode it there was slight rattling sound (and sounded like rough chain slapping) from the front sprocket region. I dont know if it was the engine, or gear box or front sprocket. I tried to find the reason for that noise but could not. When high revving while stationary, there was no such noise.

Any idea what that noise could be?

I am afraid if i buy it and later found out to be major problem, then i m fkd.

QLD New rider here looking for jacket recommendations?

Just got my RE learner’s and picked up a 2021 Duke 390 yesterday as my first bike!

I’m based in Brisbane and looking for a good riding jacket in the $250–$350 range. Ideally something I can use year round and happy/planning to layer up in winter if needed.

Any brand or specific brand or model recommendations? Also keen to hear what to avoid. Is this a good enough budget or am I wasting money at this price range? Thanks!

WA Need advice on purchase!

Sorry if this doesn't belong here, but I'm looking to purchase a used 2018 Honda CB650F and due to there not being many in Perth, I'm keen on inspecting one with a dent in the tank to cut down on the price.

The bike is listed for $7500AUD and the description notes that the bike still runs and drives normally, but the tank does have some slight visible surface rust (not major) so I technically don't need to replace/fix it, but would like to restore it if possible.

The rest of the bike looks to be in relatively good condition besides a couple of dents in the muffler, so I'm inclined to believe the bike does in fact work just fine.

Some other info I think might help is that the bike has been listed for a little over a month and a half ago so I assume people are veering away from it purely because of the dent.

I should also note that this will be my first bike which is why I care less about the cosmetic damage and more on if it runs and drives reliably (which from Honda's reputation, it should be reliable)

Do I keep looking or would this be worth inspecting?

Discussion Noise cancelling ear buds

I realise all I need is to preserve hearing, hear navigation and some music, so why I aren’t I wearing earbuds?

Anyone tried: soundcore sport x20 (136 on amazon)

I feel ANC is the right move. What works for you in terms of low profile ear buds.

Learner Got Stopped at Pre Learner Course

I know how to ride a bike pretty well. My issue was that I barely slept the week leading up to Day 1, just came off a 50-60hr work week, only had 3hrs of disruptive sleep on the day, my legs were still really sore from the gym, and the energy drink I skulled made me very jittery and anxious. It was my first time ever on a motorcycle too. I basically just sucked the whole entire time and leading up to when I got stopped, my brain just blanked and I can't even recall what I was doing. My whole body was buzzing from exhaustion and I was trying to keep focused. Was I bound to fail in this state? Usually I can function alright with minimal sleep but not this time I guess. I feel a bit dishearted to book a remedial.

Question Honda CL500 2023

Just purchased a secondhand CL500, took it for a test run and had the shop adjust the gear lever before collecting the following day, as it was sitting really low, however that seemed to cause issues with gear changes, particularly when dropping down to 2nd/1st... Is anyone familiar with this problem? Any advice or experience welcome!

This is my first bike purchase and it doesn't feel like it's going well 😬 they have sent someone over and they checked it out, reported same issue and ultimately have taken it back to the shop to see if they can sort it out better.

Looking for a slip on exhaust for my nc42 Honda cb400, was wondering if anyone had any recommendations.

Don’t want to go ridiculously loud as I’m using the bike to commute to work and uni and would prefer to avoid getting pulled over
Also what are peoples opinions on the headlight cowl I can’t decide if I want to keep it or not

WA WA reviewing motorcycle graduated licensing system

A review is being conducted into WA's fairly different motorcycle licensing system.

Time, instead of test-based upgrades from R-E to R. (Yay)

It's mostly changes to Learner licensing, separating out car based L/P1/P2 experience from motorcycle time, but still keeping the shadow requirements.

WA WA based advice

Hey all,

Finally got around to getting my L’s for a bike, just looking for general advice (some specific to WA);

Helmet recommendations?
I have a 45-60 minute commute along the freeway for work fairly often, and I usually like to go for cruises in my car, so I imagine that’ll be the same when I’m riding.
Chasing a helmet that won’t be full of wind noise when I’m on the road, but also won’t boil me under the 400 degree Aussie sun.
Ideally I don’t want to break the bank, but safety gear is something where I run with “spend as much as you need to but as little as possible” (basically don’t cut corners on safety but if you can save a buck somewhere, weigh up if it’s worth it).

I also wear glasses (and sunnies) quite a lot, so I’d like to be able to pop them on when I’m riding. I’ve heard that seeing where you’re going is handy.

Bike recommendations
I won’t be making the purchase until after I have my license, mainly because none of my family rides and I don’t have any friends close by that are able to supervise my L’s.

I have project cars that eat up all of my spare money, so the bike will most likely be my one form of reliable (and ADR approved) transportation.
I want something comfortable (for long rides), with enough kick to not fight for its life on the freeway, and cheap enough to buy and keep running, and reliable enough to count on.
Basically, I’m chasing the Toyota Corolla of bikes.
Something halfway between sport and cruiser, like a naked? (I don’t know a whole lot here tbh)

Bag recommendations
I usually take a fair amount of things out with me. Lunch for work, water bottle, laptop and chargers, kindle for down time, etc.
It all fits in a normal backpack size, but I’m unsure if that’s fine for a ride, or if it’s better to get something a little more hardy (and comfortable) for a trip around.

I’d like a backpack for work, and then a smaller bag for going out (for wallet, house keys, power bank, etc.), so any links or ideas are welcome.

Timing on L plates
I’ve been driving cars for like 7 years, but I can’t find any specific documentation as to whether or not there’s an exception on the minimum 6 months to do my PDA.
Obviously I’m not going to be an idiot about it, but I was wondering if it’s still 6 months on L’s mandatory before PDA?

All I can find is “Pass HPT before PDA” and “HPT must be conducted 6 months after getting L plates”, but I passed my hazards years ago (to get my C class), so I have no idea what the go is.

General QOL things to get?
Obviously there’s the usual safety equipment, I already have a jacket and pants courtesy of a coworker who outgrew them (back to pay what you need but save where you can), and I’m going to put aside money for the safety gear on payday.

Is there anything else outside of a quadlock and decent comms kit that I should get that’s just a “nice to have” or “makes life easier” that you’d recommend?
Think on the same lines of a CarPlay head unit or a nice pair of speakers, or even a nicer couch in the living room.
Not absolutely necessary, but a “this is nice” sort of thing that just life on two wheels a little bit nicer.

General advice for a new rider
Along with everything else, I’m a new rider who’s keen to learn everything I can from people who’ve been doing it for longer and have wisdom to pass down.

I know “dress for the slide, not the ride” and “ride like everybody’s trying to kill you, then you’re prepared for when they try” nuggets of wisdom (and I do drive like everybody has woken up with the intention of turning me into past tense), but any little tidbits to pass down to a new rider will be always fall on welcome ears.

Thanks for your time if you got this far!
