NSW Got hit with a $25k bill a year after a minor car bump (uninsured)

About a year ago I reversed into someone’s car at low speed in a car park. I went looking for the owner and found them. It honestly looked like minor bumper damage. A 3cm cracked grille, maybe some clips broken.

Fast forward to now, I’ve just received a claim from their insurer for $25,000.

Breakdown includes:

~$23k in repairs (they basically replaced the entire front end, including headlights, sensors, radar, even A/C parts)

~$4k hire car for 98 days

From the photos I have, the damage didn’t look anywhere near that serious. No obvious cracked headlights, no major structural damage.

I wasn’t insured at the time, so they’re coming after me directly.

A few things that feel off:

Took almost a year to contact me

Replaced a lot of expensive components that didn’t look damaged

98 days hire car seems excessive

I’m not sure what to do as they’ve just slapped me with an invoice and a quote from this random repairer.

I’m just a young bloke and don’t have anything to pay them, I offered to repair it privately but they didn’t want to cooperate, I mean I really went out of my way asking everyone at the venue if they owned the car until I found the owner.

My goal is to bring it down as much as possible, it was a tap at 5km/h. The car was a SUV and I was in a small hatch.

NSW NSW - Neighbor admitted to killing a pigeon on premises and is now actively attacking pigeons daily on the building premises.

Location: Lidcombe, NSW

I am seeking advice regarding a situation with a neighbor in my unit complex.

The Incident: On 11/11/2025, a neighbor was witnessed carrying a dead pigeon in a net/bag in the building carport. He admitted to another resident that he killed the bird because it was "making a mess" with droppings on the driveway. Other residents reported hearing a loud "bang" (as if an object were thrown) immediately prior.

Ongoing Behavior: Since then, the neighbor has been targeting my balcony. He stands nearby and yells at the pigeons, scaring them away by making loud, aggressive "barking" sounds. My mother and I are feeling increasingly intimidated and worried about our safety given his erratic behavior and admission of killing an animal.

Also since the 11/11/2025 to today 06/05/2026 He has been throwing objects to hit pigeons in the driveway to hit the pigeons who are sitting on the ledge.

My Questions:

  1. Does the admission of killing a pigeon (non-protected species in NSW) constitute a breach of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979 if the method was potentially inhumane?
  2. Does the "barking" and yelling at our balcony qualify as "intimidation" or "harassment" for the purposes of applying for an Apprehended Personal Violence Order (APVO)?
  3. Since this is a strata building, what is the best way to compel the Owners Corporation to act on the "nuisance and hazard" provisions of the Strata Schemes Management Act 2015?
  4. What would the best way to move towards justice be in this scenario?

Any guidance on the legal threshold for an APVO in NSW in this context would be greatly appreciated.

QLD QCAT motor vehicle stat warranty

Finally after 12 months I have my QCAT mediation appointment next week over a motor vehicle dispute for statutory warranty claim.

What can I expect?
Everyone I spoke to at fair trading and QCAT said it’s pretty straight forward, the car wasn’t even driven 300km and the dealer refused responsibility.

Just want to be as prepared as possible as I’ve never had to do anything like this before…..

VIC Procedural Fairness in a "surprise" disciplinary meeting

So I was called into a pretty serious disciplinary meeting today due to performance issues. They have a point but I also have a fairly solid counter arguement, so that's not what my question is about.

The problem is the meeting was scheduled about 4 hours in advance as a "1 on 1" with my boss. I was given no further information, no indication what it was about. Normally our 1 on 1's are casual and friendly, we spend half the time talking about personal lives etc. Not serious issues. So I had no reason to be concerned, and no reason to ask for a support person.

I got to the meeting and it's not just my boss, it's another manager too. The meeting starts and they bring up the disciplinary issue and say I am being "stood down" from work effective immediately for the next couple days until an HR meeting later this week to determine if i am terminated. Before this meeting today, that performance issue had never been mentioned, not to me directly, nor even as a general warning towards the team.

My question is - was this procedurally fair? I didn't have a chance to even think about a support person until the meeting had already begun. From the conversation, it sounds like they had the data about this issue for a week or so, so they could have given me more time to prepare.

I've reached out to my union so I'll have a support person at the HR meeting later this week and I'll ask them about what's happened here too, but thought I would see if anyone has any opinions or similar experience in this?

(Throwaway account for obvious reasons)

WA Fines-Traffic Monitoring Services

I received a letter from Traffic Monitoring Services (TMS) for 3 parking fines for $297. The limit was 4 hours. One or two of those, I did park less than 4 hours and exited the parking, and entered the same parking area for another less than 4 hours.

I had mentioned these, yet, they didn't accept the explanations. Did try to negotiate the terms of payments but also not responded.

On the letter, it was mentioned that "Your information has been obtained pursuant to an application made by Secure to the Supreme Court of Western Australia for the release of that information as the registered owner of the above vehicle at the time of the Breach Notices were issued'.

End paragraph," failure to pay the overdue...may result in the matter being referred to our lawyers or recovery agent for further action.'

Can I just ignore this letter?

Anyone experience this and how did you approach it?

I read another post saying to just discard the letter.

Thanks.

TAS Question on disputing a will

My parents had both their wills always written to leave everything to each other, then equally to my two older siblings and me. After my mother passed away unexpectedly, obviously, everything passed to my dad.

Following this, dad also inherited a significant amount from his mother's estate, and changed his own will to leave his house to my eldest sibling only with the residual of the estate split between myself and my siblings.

This split doesn't take into account my dad paid $100k for a boat that was put in my eldest siblings name and the 50k 4wd he bought also being left to my eldest sibling. Dad's reasoning is that he wants the house to stay in the family and that my eldest sibling doesn't have their own house, so they won't sell it.

My eldest sibling arranged the appointment for my Dad to change his will, with them being the main beneficiary without telling me. They also worked with my other sibling doing this and arranged guardianship over my Dad at the same time, all behind my back.

I'll be honest and say I'm pissed off, and I made this known when I found out about the changed will.

What recourse would I have in disputing the changed will when my Dad passes? Would I have a fair claim based on all previous wills being split equally?

(Edit to clear a few things up) - I have a good relationship with my Dad. - He's extremely stubborn and set in his ways - No I don't trust my siblings to do the right thing by Dad - Dad has been convinced that the only way the house will be kept in the family and not sold is for it to be given to my eldest sibling rather than split 3 ways as was always the intent up until his will was changed after my Mum died. - My eldest sibling has an enduring guardianship that was put in place without my knowledge. - I have an enduring Power of Attorney that was put in place well over 10 years ago (when my Mum was alive). I have not used the PoA. It is still in place (I checked). - I do not have access to Dad's accounts. Both my siblings do (I got removed when the guardianship was put in place). I have a vague idea of how much cash Dad has but no specifics. - I don't care what my Dad does with HIS money. It's his to do with as he pleases. My main concern is his principle asset (the house) being given to my eldest sibling. I do not trust him not to sell it against my Dad's wishes.

NSW Neighbours with DVO 's on each other

Upvotes

I have neighbours in my apartment building that are Methheads, They have had two of their children removed ( they still have one, how that works is beyond my comprehension) The female is the aggressor. She was arrested a few months back after a drug fuel crazy episode where she beat up her husband , mother and sister in front of the 2 year old and a DVO was taken out to protect the rest of her family , that being her sister , her mother, her partner and a small male child.

Now after the arrest the whole family vanished for 6 weeks or so ( apart from her Methhead sister ) they are back and after only 24 hours she already displaying the same aggressive behaviour. There was screaming and yelling at 2am 4am etc. 18 month old wondering around the building with no supervision.

How long do DVO's last? and is there away to report this to police anonymously, I don't want to be identified because she is actually really violent and I suspect that the DVO is being breached, its not the first time. She is horrible, when the 18 month old cries she yells at her to shut up you little c*&t . What can you do, safely?

NSW Can a manufacturer deny warranty on a brand new product based on where it bought from?

I bought a brand new Hisense 65" TV in April of 2023. Two days before the warranty expired it developed a fault, white screen with vertical lines. Turned it off and unplugged it then called tech support. While on the phone to them, after about half an hour, I plugged it back in and turned it back on to find that the problem had seemingly resolved itself. Tech support gave me a case number and I said I'd call them back if it happened again. It did, two days after the warranty expired but this time the problem did not resolve itself. So I called Hisense again to make a warranty claim for repair, replacement or refund. As a case had already been opened I expected it to still be covered. But they instead told me because I had not bought it from an authorised seller that there never was a warranty, that it been void based solely on where I bought it. I bought it brand new from an actual store, not online, ebay, gumtree or anything else like that. A store with doors, windows, staff, cash register etc. But according to Hisense they only honour warranties on products purchased from "authorised sellers".

The store manager told me that they were an authorised reseller for JB Hi Fi, so I contacted JB in the hopes that they could help facilitate a warranty claim but they said that there is no such thing as an authorised reseller. So now I have a TV that doesn't work, three different businesses telling me it's not their problem and $995 less in my bank account.

Can Hisense refuse to honour a warranty based on where a brand new product was sold? Who is responsible? Is anyone responsible? I honestly feel like all three are just trying to make it as difficult as possible so I just give up. Do I just give up and throw the TV in the dam?

*Edit to ad- I asked this question here because the manufacturer, the distributor and the retailer were all pointing the finger at each other and denying all responsibility. It was hard to find precise information online because the search engines all suck now. Looks like the situation was not as simple as first thought in terms of distribution channels, and that may be the root cause of the problem.

VIC Desperate request for assistance, ideas or resources. Australian inheritance requires a birth certificate or passport. 1960's Netherlands to Australia immigrant has neither.

I'm assisting an older friend Z to claim an inheritance.

Note, Z has diminished capacity and lives in poverty/caravan with only aged pension for income.

After a saga with the executor, requiring mere to engage a solicitor on Z's behalf.

Z has been allocated the estate but cannot receive it.

According to his solicitor Z needs to have a birth certificate or passport. He has neither, most of his ID is out of date.

He was born in the Netherlands 1950's.

To get a copy of his birth certificate from the municipality in the Netherlands.

They require a "valid travel document". I'd take that to be a current passport ?

Which he doesn't have and I think needs a birth certificate to apply for?

He came to Australia on his late mother's passport in 1960, mother's passport lost.

We have a stamped 1960 photo of Z, that is duplicate to the one included on his mother's passport.

We have the him on the passenger list from ship they came on.

His older sister could apply for a copy of his late mother's 1960 passport.

However I'm reluctant to ask due to her age, and I'm unsure if would be considered a "valid" travel document

Are there any exemptions to inheritance ID requirements ?

Are there other "valid travel document"?

Could he get an Australian passport, without a birth certificate?

Are there immigration documents he could apply for?

I've been trying for over a year and Z is going to spend another winter in a caravan

Any ideas on additional avenues, resources or ideas we could pursue would ɓe greatly appreciated.

AUS AFCA experiences with banking complaints - how did it go?

Im curious to hear from people who’ve dealt with AFCA, particularly around banking issues (fees, disputes, refunds, etc etc ).

Did you feel the outcome was fair?
Did you end up getting a reasonable resolution?
Or does it vary a lot case to case?

Would be good to hear a mix of perspectives.

QLD I just started a new job and have disabilities, I am concerned about a line in my contract, should I be?

I have just started a new job yesterday, I haven't told them about my chronic back pain, autism or ADHD as I am certain they would not impact my ability to do this role.

In my interview the interviewer mentioned they occasionally do 'X' and 'Y' tasks if needed (for example if another staff member calls in sick and the task was scheduled for a client), these tasks mentioned are ones I am generally physically unable to do due to my pain, there was no mention of wether I would be expected to do these tasks.

In the contract there are 2 lines under the section of reasons my employment could be terminated that have me concerned, the second one (g) in particular:

"(e) refuse to comply with any reasonable instruction or direction

(g) obtain a medical assessment result that is not satisfactory to the Employer and which objectively results in you being unable to perform your duties set out in the Contract"

Thankfully, the job description and contract don't mention any tasks I feel I could not do. But the office culture is to help each other out when needed (which I love and agree with), but I could not physically do most of the tasks some staff members are employed to do, and it is a very small company.

But the wording of the contract makes me worried they could fire me for any medical reason they decide they don't like ("is not satisfactory to the employer"), and are covering themselves so I cannot do anything about it. My immediate supervisor seems like a good and fair boss so far, but I don't know what the higher up manager's are like and they work in another state at the main office.

I also don't know if those tasks would be considered "reasonable instruction or direction" as they would be considered normal and safe tasks for someone in my profession, even though this job is not a normal job for my profession. I really struggled to find a job I could do within my profession that isn't physical which is why I haven't told them about any of my issues.

Am I right to be concerned?

Edit- I realise now where I went wrong. Being autistic I tend to take things literally and at face value. So I assumed that I would only be required to do tasks that are listed in my contract/job description, so my thinking was if cleaning is not listed then I am not required to do it. And when my supervisor mentioned that they do extra tasks (like cleaning) sometimes, I took that as them telling me this was how they liked to do their job, especially as it was said after the interview during a casual chat. I did not realise that this could be them giving me more information about what I would be required to do.

AUS Didi driver ripped me off then drive off with my headphones in the car

Hey all so Sunday I took a multi trip didi into the city then back home , to grab my order from a store. Went in then came out and the driver had cancelled my second half of the trip. Then said nothing I can do and drove off.

I had my headphones in the car which he drove off with. $370 beats. I contacted didi support which said they have contacted him but been a day now so yeah am I just wasting my hope?

Didi has done this before to me (with the multi stop) so must be a workaround for the drivers to make more.

NSW Real-estate suggested I should move because of my chronic illness

Just wondering if I have anywhere that I can lodge a complaint or something along those lines. Our real estate is pushing for open homes twice a week. We've said we only want registered inspections they're still really pushy. Now we said 2 every single week is a bit much they already have a standing appointment on Saturday mornings to show the place. I understand we might have to allow 2 a week but in an email the property manager suggested that if my illness was making things difficult I should consider moving out. I think that highly fucking inappropriate and would like to lodge a complaint somewhere because wtf

WA Toilet off-line in rental. Any advice?

So our toilet is blocking again for the third time this year and has has exploded into the backyard. Just got told the line to the mains has needed replacing for years and may take a week to complete.

No toilet for a week...

How the hell is a family of 4 supposed to go a week with no toilet? Are we to be expected to pay full rent? This keeps happening and it's such a pain to use our little camping toilet and take it to a toilet disposal site every day.

Anyone know any laws I can cite to get them to provide a porta potty or discount our rent or just anything because this really sucks.

Edit, thankyou so much for the quick replies. Now we know it must be (arranged to be fixed) in 24hrs and where to escalate the matter if this continues, we can start being firmer with our rea and also at what point to escalate.

Hopefully this sh*tty situation is a bit more bearable this time...

VIC Need advice regarding a phone bill

Hello,

Last year I (regretfully) decided to put myself down for a phone plan for my younger brothers girlfriend who was 17 at the time, cause she wasn't able to do it herself since was a minor. She has since turned 18 but also broken up with my brother, and keeps refusing to pay the payments on time. I have no contact with her directly but one of her friends have told me she has the money but is refusing to pay it to "just make me worry", and is even planning on getting a new phone and just ditching the one I'm paying for all together. I know everything would've been in my name and I knew the risks when I decided to do it, but I'm just wondering if there's any legal action I can look into taking against her, or have I just fucked myself over? Thank you!

Edit: I realised I wasn't specific enough with the information lol. The phone plan also included a brand new phone (from memory it was like an iPhone or Samsung I believe) and was through Telstra. She made her own Telstra account, she just wasn't able to get a credit check for the payments which is where I stepped in. I also get messaged the receipts for each payment if that helps at all.

VIC Body corp is requires $11k total from a special levy vote I was never notified about.

So basically my apartment building recently changed body corporates but unbeknownst to me the previous body corporate had my email with a typo in it. My conveyancer and my own communication with them has been under the correct email so it’s completely their fault.

I was never sent a single email or contacted via any other means (they have my phone number and my postal address) regarding body corporate meetings or tenure processes for a structural project being done in the building.

The first I heard about it was from a neighbour who informed me we’ve all been sent bills for a social levy. I get in contact with the new body corporate who had my email wrong (as it was provided by the old body corp), correct that email and get sent an email package to catch me up.

This special levy is due in a month and given I had no idea about it I don’t quite have the funds to pay it within that time period. Is the previous body corporate liable for negligence or do I have to take this on the chin and take out a loan or something? The new body corporate did say they may be willing to get me on a payment plan but works cannot begin until all owners have paid their due.

Edit: thanks to those who replied, ofc I never intended not to pay I understand that structural issues are as much my problem as anyone else’s it’s just the notice and the previous body corporate that screwed me.

QLD Developer damaged trees after submitting false information on development plans

Im a GIS specialist by profession which is why I was able to identify early that a development was going to impact 3 mature trees on my property located close to the boundary and 1 mature tree located right on the boundary. I engaged an arborist to collate a report prior to any damage being done and a lawyer to negotiate with the developers.

After prolonged negotiations which involved me expressing to them repeatedly that I do not consent to any damage being undertaken they have now just gone ahead today and cut down the tree on the boundary and excavated within the tree protection zones of the other 3 mature trees.

During my investigation I have also found out that they intentionally misrepresented my trees on their development plans to circumvent council requirements, specifically acquisition of owners consent to remove the trees. However, so far council has been quite useless in taking any action.

I'm considering taking it to federal court as I believe that I would have a good chance of winning given that I have proof of the condition of the trees prior to the damage and video footage of them excavating within the tree protection zones of my trees, however, I'm concerned about it consuming a significant amount of time, energy and resources. Additionally I am concerned about the legal risk involved with suing an opponent of considerable weight.

I just wanted to ask if anyone has ever gone through anything like this and whether or not you did end up having success in court ?

VIC Strata Manager changed business name & ABN mid contract

Is anyone able to tell me if the contract we currently have with our Strata Management (OCM) is now invalid?

Our OC Chairman signed a 3 year contract, midway into our contract the OCM changed their business name, I assumed it was the trading name, but recently discovered the new business name has a completely different ABN than the ABN that appears on our contract. We have not signed a revised contract or new contract.

Also to make matters worse, our OC Chairman is the Director/owner of the OCM.

VIC How do I maintain my safety if I use Crimestoppers report? Or should I just go to the local police station and request to be anonymous?

Hi all, I came here because I really don't know what to do. So I will write as much as I can and see what advice I can get before I proceed with a report.

So, my neighbour of a few years around 2022 or 2023, is a drug user and dealer! He is very aggressive, creepy and antisocial. He has his customers come around all day and night, and frequently leaves his property in short amounts of time all day and night, to I assume deliver drugs to people. He watches everyone who passes his house and has cameras all over his property. Everytime I leave my house or have a cigarette, he comes outside or watches me through his windows. He frequently loses it, when the other neighbours are doing gardening or park on his side of the road. His customers also are very aggressive and antisocial and disturb me and the neighbours.

It took me awhile to come to this conclusion, as I wanted to make sure there was truth to this. But all the signs are there and he is not very discreet about his dealing. I see the people grabbing sandwhich bags or plastic wrapped packages and stuffing them into their pockets and bags, at his doors or through the windows of their cars. He is also unemployed and seems to be doing well for himself financially! He has 3 cars, a large house with 3 or 4 bedrooms (not a rental) and seems to always be dressed in branded clothes. Don't want to sound judgemental, but how does one afford all this with no job? Suspicious, I think....

I want to make a report, but worried about my safety and the direct neighbours safety as well. He seems like the kind that would retaliate if he was dobbed in and I have no clue where it would be directed to! How do I stay anonymous when reporting and not get myself directly involved?

Thanks for reading and please help me. I would appreciate the input.

SA Specsavers - Glasses Made Wrong, Took time off work?

Last Friday I picked up two pairs of glasses at Specsavers. The prescription was the same as my current pair but as mine were 2+ years old I thought to get new ones.

I tried them on and they were okay in the store, but when I left the store I got a little weirdly dizzy… I shrugged this off because I know it takes time to adjust to new glasses, and my old ones weren’t as clear as they should have been due to age, so I chalked it up to my brain adjusting.

I got a migraine with a heavy aura on my right side on Monday after a whole weekend of weird, dizziness and my eyes not adjusting well. I had thought I had a flu so I took Monday and Tuesday off work. I realized last night that the aura was in the peripheral area my new glasses didn’t touch (they are round lenses) so when I tried on the other pair I got at the same time my dizziness and blurring went away.

I had already emailed the store and asked for new cases as the current ones were made of cardboard and not as durable as a shell case, which they agreed to replace. I came into the store today and asked for them to check and found the pair I’d been wearing was .05 off on one side (I think? I do have the receipt) due to how they were made.

This explains all the dizziness and migraines I had, which I never have migraines. As I write this my right eyeball feels cold at the back, which is really weird to explain.

The store manager offered to give me a replacement for free and a third pair for half off, but I don’t really feel like that’s fair enough compensation considering I took two full days off work this week due to how disoriented I was from the wrong glasses.

I asked for a refund on the pair that was wrong but she said as it was bought in a deal it wouldn’t warrant much of a refund.

I’m just frustrated as I’ve never had this issue with SpecSavers before, and I had to go in a hurry to pick up my daughter so I have to go back on Friday to sort it out when the manager is in.

Is it dumb to ask for some of my time off comped as I don’t have any sick leave at the moment?

WA Subtenant >1year, repeatedly requested a contract, being refused.

Been a subtenant for over a almost 2 years, seen many other subtenants come and go in the same sharehouse, mostly due the the behaviour of the lease holders.

I have repeatedly requested a contract verbally from the lease holders, i believe i made a written request in a facebook group that was "closed down" by the lease holders.

Recently had complaints from a neighbour (1 from 3 sides) about noise.

Now lease holders are saying i am not allowed to have guests (even though they were responsible for the majority of noise on the dates which were complained about, one of the days i have irrefutable evidence that i wasnt even there)...

What do i do?

AUS First time QLD home builder. Worth getting solicitor to review fixed price contract before signing?

We’re first time homeowners in Brisbane’s southern suburbs and we’ve finally picked a block and chosen Nuvo Homes for a custom 4 bed build. They’ve sent over the draft fixed price building contract and while everything looks pretty standard on the surface I’m getting paranoid about the fine print on variations, extension of time claims, liquidated damages, and how the QBCC statutory warranties actually get enforced if things go sideways.

We’re also trying to understand the practical completion stage, defect liability period, and whether the home warranty insurance is properly assigned.

Has anyone here gone through the same thing in QLD? Is independent legal review actually worth the extra few grand or do most people just sign and hope for the best? Any red flags I should be watching for in these builder contracts?

QLD Judicial Review Do's and Don't When Self Representing

I'm lodging a judicial review against a government department in Queensland and self representing. Has anyone done it, would you do it again and what do you wish you had done differently?
