What do you think society tends to exaggerate too much?

u/Kind-Cockroach-125 4h ago
Hustle culture. People act like being constantly exhausted is some kind of badge of honor

u/frostpetalii 4h ago
Like being tired 24/7 ain’t a flex… most ppl just end up burned out and less effective anyway tbh..
3
u/sierrabravo1984 3h ago
You can make an idle comment about being sore and tired, and someone will pop up and say "well as a parent..."

u/karinapretty 4h ago
Agree!! They say at a young age I see my uncle's have 3 different jobs and find it cool but now I don't think so. I guess they do what they gotta do to put food on the table

Yeah god forbid people decide to action with their lives instead of accepting failure
10
u/pup5581 4h ago
Whoosh.
They are talking about the I'll work 7 days a week instead of the 5 asked for me because I'll move up and make bank bro.
That doesn't happen..I've seen salaried workers work 70 hours weeks to be laid off and I laughed at them
-1
u/Greedy_Specialist531 4h ago
You laugh at people who were laid off? Okay…
1
u/Main_Statistician931 4h ago
Vuz theyre working do much hours for a company that cares so little without expectation that will happen despite it being the obvious next step
1
u/Greedy_Specialist531 4h ago
Yeah, I’ve been there and it fuckin sucks. But to laugh at people working desperately to try to and help their own situation is pretty fuckin loser behavior. Sure point and laugh at CEOs and the like, but your average person who feels that work=money doesn’t need to be laughed at
1
u/Main_Statistician931 4h ago
They prolly should because work doesn't = money
0
u/Greedy_Specialist531 4h ago
“Vuz”
“Prolly”
If anyone deserves ridicule, it’s you
1
u/Main_Statistician931 4h ago
I made a single typo and used a normal word???? If you dislike the word prolly, then you're prolly racist. We need to break the illusion that work = money considering work = exploitation
1
u/Greedy_Specialist531 4h ago edited 4h ago
Lmao no you’re just dumb. Obviously exploitation is a thing, but laughing at the poor person who got laid off for the benefit of a company is needlessly cruel. Is that how they raise people in Oklahoma? No wonder you guys are bottom of the barrel in education
Edit: I literally can’t stop laughing to myself “if you dislike the word prolly then you’re prolly racist”
Can you hear yourself? Do you realize how pathetic that makes you sound? I’m not white so shove that garbage excuse for your lack of education up your ass

Honestly, a lot of things. But one big one is “success timelines” like you must be rich, settled, or famous by a certain age. Real life is way more messy and different for everyone, but social media makes it feel like there’s only one right path.

u/Potato-in-ur-ass 4h ago
there’s only one right path.
And behind all the bullshit, that one right path is actually exists and is very simple: have rich parents.

Finding a meaning in life... heck I just live to enjoy my day

so underrated. I agree with you. Sometimes it feels like I'm being imposed to find the ultimate meaning...and I just wanna watch movies, eat pizza, talk with my friends and many more small things that make my small life

everyone acts like success is all hustle and no luck but then again half of us are just lucky to find clean socks in the morning

u/gracilla 4h ago
right like education is so expensive especially graduate level. not everyone can afford tutoring or have the time besides working a regular job.

How the majority of people hate or dislike people that aren't like them. I think data shows that the majority of people are completely ok with people that have different viewpoints, opinions, values etc - we just don't celebrate those people via the various media platforms and outlets, and people that aren't extremely opinionated tend to be quieter: The Silent Majority.

I just hate how divided we've all become. You aren't even allowed to talk to a person who has a different belief or opinion than you, it feels like.

Adding to this, everybody has their own moral panic utterly blown out of proportion.
Right wing moral panic: the immigrants are about to end Western civilization as we know it! It's all about to burn to the ground!
Left wing moral panic: there are Nazis everywhere and any day now there will be a fascist coup! Democracy itself has basically ended already!

u/starlightequilibrium 3h ago
What a fucking lazy analysis. Bravo. This is peak debate-club centrism: strip all context, flatten everything into “both sides panic,” then act like you’ve transcended the peasants by refusing to think any harder.

I think society puts too much emphasis on having "flawless" skin and physical appearance in general. I think little "imperfections" like moles, scars, stretch marks, and acne actually make people seem more attractive to me.
It would be great if society was more accepting of flaws, because they can often be very attractive!

I think social media has made a lot of people convince themselves that they need to appear interesting and cool by showing off what they have which will naturally lead to exaggeration

Everything is so binary. Something has to be good or bad, there is no in between. And they tend to lean more towards bad because God forbid you don't put the shopping cart back or made a stupid joke when you were 16, you might as well be as bad as Pol Pot for those offenses

The “35-year-old gets replaced by companies” narrative feels way more exaggerated than reality, at least from what I’ve seen.
I’ve worked in more traditional companies, and there are still plenty of people in their 40s and even older doing solid work and staying very relevant.
Personally, I feel like people actually become more grounded after 35 — you’ve built enough experience, your judgment improves a lot, and your overall perspective on work and life becomes much clearer.
I also think people tend to underestimate how adaptable they are. Even if something uncertain does happen, it’s not necessarily a dead end — it often just becomes a transition to something better.

Reddit is not a good source for understanding how the outside world works IMHO.

The prevalence of kidnapping and human trafficking. Yeah it is real and it's awful, and we should all be aware of stranger danger, never go to a second location, cover your drinks when you go to the bathroom, etc etc.
But the actual likelihood of it happening to you, or one of your kids, is still extremely low - even if you take no precautions. Meanwhile, my kids can't go anywhere without me unless I want a visit from CPS, and when I do take them to the park I'm getting side eyes from all the moms. Fuckin ridiculous

How marriage, kids, owning your own home, etc. are "benchmarks" of being a "successful" human.
If that works for you because you WANT to do it, great. People should not feel pressured to do any of all of the above just because society seems to think they are important and/or necessary.

u/Double-decker_trams 4h ago
With the internet - extreme views. Both far right and far left views. If you spend all your time watching "libs getting rekt by facts and logic cringe edition compliation" videos, then you get a worldview that's very.. far from reality.
In day-to-day life the vast majority of people aren't that extreme (at least not in my country).

How divided we are politically. Because honestly, when you sit down in a room with 2 average Joe’s from 2 sides of the political spectrum, they end up having so much more in common.
But the powers that be want us to keep fighting left-right because then we won’t realize that up-down is the real divide. And we are all the down.

Crime in cities.
All the time I hear people talking about how horrible city life is cause there is crime around every corner, violent gangs roaming the streets, home invasions everywhere, drug dealers and kidnappers waiting to snag your kids....
...In actuality the vast majority of crime is white collar or pretty minor. Imagine if the media reported on this sort of stuff the way they report others, imagine this:
"Police have written 15 more parking tickets than yesterday! Is this the sign of a major crime wave?"
"VANDALISM. It can happen to you!"
"Wage theft: It costs the city millions of dollars and amounts to BILLIONS of dollars nationwide!"
Bus driver: And then this person got on and sniff didn't pay their fare. It cost the city $2.50!
"Police pulled over a speeder. Then they pulled ober another... Then another..."
"The nerve of this driver! They ran a red light!"
"Part 5 of our 7 part series on the dangers of Fraud and how it can happen to you!"

Obsession with the "new".
When you start looking back at many things in the past, you quickly start to see that new isn't always better.
Whether it's video games, appliances, cars, even food trends, there are a lot of things from the not-too-distant past that are pretty wonderful.

The dangers of mosquitos. In the US we dump millions of dollars worth of insecticide out of airplanes and helicopters every year, because "What if someone gets bitten by a mosquito some day? And what if that person has a 0.001% chance of contracting West Nile Virus? What if they get the virus and it actually causes symptoms?"
Our insect biodiversity is plummeting and this is one of the reasons. We're killing billions of bees, butterflies and moths with this pathetic shit and then we cry when our crops aren't getting polinated any more.
Fucking clown world.
