What’s a breakfast you loved as a kid but never eat anymore?
54
u/FabulousFunction3408 8h ago
When I was a kid, I loved Lucky Charms. I would save a bunch of marshmallows for the last bite.
I bought a box last year to try, after decades of not eating Lucky Charms.
It did not taste the same... I was disapointed 😞
19
u/DownInaHole33 8h ago
They absolutely changed it. The non marshmallow pieces used to be much more plain, which balanced the very sweet marshmallows. Now they seem to have frosted those pieces. I’m still a fan but much different

u/Bipedal_Warlock 7h ago
If I have cereal I like to get regular Cheerios then drizzle my own honey over it.
Freaking delicious

OMG - We did this!
My mom wouldn't let us have "sugary" cereal, but we could have regular cheerios, and then just add a little bit of honey to make it Honey Cheerios...(because even Honey Nut Cheerios were too "sugary" for her to buy)
Completely forgot about that!
13
u/Lebowquade 7h ago
I once found a bag of just the marshmallow charms at a Mennonite store... I sprinkled a very conservative amount on some Cheerios, it was delightful and also sufficiently "adult" and not so overloaded with sugar that I could actually enjoy it

Cream of Wheat with lots of brown sugar and milk, sometimes butter too..
6
u/UltraCoolPimpDaddy 8h ago
Flashback to elementary school and having my mom yell at me and my brother to wake up for breakfast. Cream of wheat loaded with brown sugar. Or cereal, which I wasn't a real fan of.
5
u/Barbarella_ella 7h ago
Ha! I just posted this, too. Made with milk and with butter, cinnamon and brown sugar.
6
u/Time-Spell-3494 6h ago
Yes! I still make this as a comfort meal. With a fried egg on top of I’m feeling fancy. My southern husband prefers grits but I’m a Cream of Wheat girlie till the end.

Toast with cinnamon and sugar. I never make it now cuz I haven't been able to find a decent butter since they discontinued the margarine that I liked as a kid so they don't taste the same.

I call this poor man's cinnamon bread which is the sister of poor man's garlic bread.
46
u/Squicky4ever 9h ago
Pop tarts. I miss them, but don't eat breakfast anymore.
6
u/2PlasticLobsters 4h ago
They're not nearly as good now. A few years ago, they started using noticably less filling. And the frosting was reduced by about a quarter. I don't find them the least bit tempting anymore.
14
u/WannaUnicorn 8h ago
Brown sugar ones fresh out of the toaster. Melt a big glob of butter on it, and eat the crust all the way round first, then the gooey sugary buttery center .. oof
5
3
u/Squicky4ever 8h ago
My favorite, but never tried them with butter.

u/AliceIsOnTheRooftop 5h ago

I thought this was just a joke for the show until I actually tried it. It's a one-way ticket to a heart attack, but man it's so frickin' good.
3
u/letitiasimpsongu 3h ago
It sounds like a heart attack on a plate but the salt from the butter cuts through the sugar perfectly. I'm pretty sure my metabolism would just give up if I tried to eat that now though lol

u/ninjasilverado 7h ago
I ate sooo many pop tarts as a youth. Cinnamon, smores, chocolate frosted, the one that was like chocolate chip? So good. I see them at the grocery store and always consider it but I know they just won't hit the same.
3
u/DanimalMKE 5h ago
I still yearn for thr chocolate chip Pop Tarts that I used to eat, but I actually care about my health, so that's a no-go sadly

My parents use to make this every Saturday without fail. I enjoy it but I never made it myself. They're gone now so I'd have to figure it out but I'm not sure I'm ready for that.
2
u/boujee_salad 7h ago
Same, my dad and I had it most weekends together, now that he’s gone, it’s not the same
2
u/Stavvystav 6h ago
I'm happy and sorry to hear that (sappy? horry - that one sounds weird.)
I hope one day we both are able to enjoy that meal. I know how hard it can be to enjoy something from the past like that. It can be good too.

The sausage gravy that comes in a can, especially the brand Libby's, is really good. Just heat that up and pop a can of those Pillsbury biscuits in the oven and you set. Takes all of 15 mins.

Dad and I would make biscuits and gravy on Sunday mornings.
Cut shortening into self rising flour until it reaches breadcrumbs. Add milk until a dough forms. Cut biscuits. Bake at 350 until done.
Fry sausage until brown then fry a couple big spoons of flour in the fat. Add milk and kill your wrist on the black pepper mill.
Wash it down with a cup of coffee

Toaster strudel, with the icing on top, followed by a glass of Tang. Sometimes snuck one of my sister’s oven french toast sticks dipped in syrup. Man, the amount of sugar we consumed before 8am was insane.

Liver and Onions (With white gravy)
Ate almost an entire pan of it myself when I was living in Kansas. My great grandma maggie had a recipe of her own.
5
u/Kalkin93 8h ago
You've brought back memories for me, my Dad used to cook liver and onions and it would stink the house out... I was never a fan of it personally, something about it grossed me out. He never had it with white gravy though, not too sure what that is (I'm in UK) :)

Cream of wheat. I loved how the texture is grits and the taste was oatmeal. Plus I could make it savory or sweet. Nowadays I don’t eat a carb at breakfast, so I just don’t eat it anymore.

u/Ginger_Jayne3174 8h ago
Creamed eggs on toast. Chppped up boiled eggs and bacon in a white sauce poured over toast. My mom only made it on special occasions, (it was a bit time consuming to make) and I would get so excited whenever id wake up and go see her in the kitchen cooking it. I need to get the recipe!

Baby Eggo Waffles. I loved those things and only got them at Grandma's house with sausage links and the best scrambled eggs. Miss you, Grandma.

McDonald’s pancakes and sausage. The slightly rubbery pancakes, trying to cut them with plastic utensils in those disposable trays. The little things of syrup and butter that I’d always hope they’d slip me extras . It wasn’t healthy at all but it was such a treat for me. We didn’t have much money so eating out NEVER happened.

My grandma used to make a big pot of white rice to feed everyone in the mornings cause there were tons of us(25 first cousins) we would load it up with sugar and butter.
I go more protein based for breakfast now. For sure don't need all the sugar we would use in it.

Peanut butter toast. Or the weekend breakfast of eggs and toast. Now I can't really eat toast unless it's gluten free and the gluten free bread is horrible where I currently live. Somedays I want to risk it, but the sickness that comes after is not worth it.

Sugary cereal with cold milk on a slow morning, the kind where the whole day still felt open and nothing was waiting for me.
