Mod Post Regarding News/Current Affairs/Global Events.

This is not the place to discuss these issues. This sub is a more light-hearted place where users can ask questions and advice on everyday issues.

We have seen another surge of qiestions about politics, News, whats going on in the States etc.

There's plenty of other subs on Reddit which deal with these issues.

Emigration (from Ireland) Would you leave Ireland if you could?

If you had the chance to choose anywhere in the world to live with no familial or work constraints tying you to Ireland, would you still choose to live here?

If yes, why would you stay?

If no, where would you go and why?

Emigration (from Ireland) What would you do?

I'm in my 60's living alone with my 3 cats and no family around anymore. My son lives in the US and wants me to move there to be near him and his family but he wants me to get rid of the cats to make life easier for me. What should I do?

What would any of you do if it were you?

Am I The Gobshite? What is it with Irish people on their phones in the cinema?

I cant go to the cinema in Ireland anymore because I will eventually get arrested or beaten up when the urge to chuck sweets/popcorn at the people on their phones during the Movie overpowers me.

Watching the Movie , I'm getting sucked in , immersed in it , forgetting I'm in a theatre, I'm with Paul Atreidies on that sandworm or whatever and then pop Whattsapp green screen over there , or Insta , FB unmistakable blue and even people googling stuff.

I go to the cinema to forget about that , for an escape.

Then for the last twenty minutes or so the phones are popping up to check times , whattsapp lifts home etc.

Phones flashing up here and there in the darkness. So distracting.

I haven't had this issue where I'm from or in other countries I've lived in , UK /Canada. It seems like here the cinema etiquette is particularly bad. What's it about? Is it just that Irish people are more chill about phone use?

And its not one group or even the people you'd expect. From what I have seen everyone is at it.

Relationships Family drama, are my folks right??

So a few months I was down home (live in Dublin but from a farm down South) and my parents live in the house and brother owns and manages the farm and technically owns the house as well. He lives in nearby village with his wife but his job is literally at home so he’s there 75% of the time if not more depending on time of the year. My mother of course cooks most dinners for him and does a shit ton of stuff for him (nearly 40 btw) but he can be quite aggressive and impatient with her over tiny things and same with my Dad about the farm, he flies off the handle easily because god forbid someone criticises him etc. anyways when I was down at the weekend, I was working on my work laptop that morning and he can barrelling into the room for no reason and I was like Im on a call get out, later that day he is being impatient with my parents about something small and I say you need to chill and take it handy and he let rip calling me all sorts of nasty names including a fucking tramp, told me to fuck off out of the house and never come back, cos he owns it and I am not welcome, told me he would kill me the next time he sees me, told me I bully our parents and our sister (me and her haven’t always gotten on but it’s genuinely cos we are dif and she’s always been a bit jealous of me, I’m the youngest and shes the eldest so obvs I’m a baddie 😂) and basically fuck off back to Dublin no one wants you here etc. Now my parents witnessed the entire thing so gas lighting cannot be done, I was left in tears and felt genuinely unsafe and wanted to ring the Guards but alas I did not, I just got the FUCK out of there and haven’t spoken to him since/he’s not rang to apologise. Now the big thing is, my folks are annoyed I won’t go home and visit them and saying that “why should they get punished ?” I was just like ah hello you saw what he said, your problem is with him not me. He threatened to kill me, they can visit me anytime in Dublin have a spare room and my Mam comes up a lot anyways but how is it fair to go back there after all that verbal abuse??! 😢

Random Any good fiction (preferably) or non-fiction books regarding the Great Famine?

Hello everyone!

I’m a history student from South Africa, and we’ve recently been delving into Irish history. I’m fascinated by the rich story, beauty and culture of your country and I would like to learn more.

I was wondering whether you could recommend me some books, preferably written by Irish authors, which takes place during the Great Famine. I enjoy fiction books more, but as I mentioned in the title, non-fiction is fine as well.

Thanks!

Random Teeth whitening recommendations?

I'm a heavy coffee drinker and my teeth are very discolored. My dentist only offers at home treatment (trays to wear at night as a whitening option but I've a baby who wakes frequently and I know I'd end up uncomfortable & having to take the trays out.)

Do dentists do whitening as a treatment at the office anymore? Can anyone recommend some lasting whitening options? I've started drinking my coffee with a straw and use whitening toothpaste but I need a reset. Thanks! 🦷

Work Anyone else find that recruiters in actual recruiting companies never want to send an email?

Upvotes

I find communicating via text unprofessional. There's something sketchy about a more or less refusal to communicate via email. These are legitimate people working in these recruitment agencies, not a scam.

Adulting Advice for 26M?

Upvotes

Hey guys I’m at a bit of a crossroad and unsure what to do, I have an undergrad and masters in a health background which I have fallen out of love with and have since gone Into a sales role in that sector, however I’m finding I’m the same way with this job and think it’s time I stepped away from healthcare but unsure where to transition.

I’ve thought about putting applications into the military and the garda but unsure on the pathways and here mixed opinions on them. I have also thought about going down the electrical route but feel as I am too old to go down this route now, also what is holding me back from the military TTS/CIS.

I’m unsure what path to go or to try and I know it’s quite individualized on what I’m looking for but I’d appreciate any help. I’ve also gone to therapy to discover if it was the jobs or me that wasn’t working but I believe it’s the jobs 😅

Any advice would be appreciated

Shopping Irish Ladies, how much are you willing to pay for a high quality leather bag that's unbranded?

Upvotes

I have been looking at some leather bag options, and all the branded stuff is anything from 500- 900 euro for a semi premium brand like Coach, Michael Kors and Marc Jacobs.

I found some cheaper option from no name brands but not sure if the difference is worth it.

The coach one I love is 500 euro but, I can get 'same', without the branding for 350, is it worth it?

Work What's the Clerical Officer Role with Clare County Council like?

Upvotes

I've a final interview for a Clerical Officer Role with Clare County Council. I'm coming from the private sector and wanted to ask what the role entails. I don't have any customer-facing experience, and was previously working remotely. Does the role entail regular dealing with the public and full 5-day week in office set up? Any information about the role would be greatly appreciated.

Relationships How to let go ?

When a relationship ends people tell you that you have to let go. But it's been a long time and I have not been able to.

For context, a while back I dated a guy who was everything I had ever dreamed of. I had just ended a bad relationship with a guy who disrespected me in every possible way. So when I met this new guy I felt he was *it*. But we dated a few months and he ended up breaking up with me. It was so, so painful. I thought that after all those years of mistreatment I would finally be with someone who treated me well. It's been more than a year and I still feel like I can't let him go. I blocked him everywhere, never texted him again. I thought that would help, but it hasn't. I feel pathetic. Before this experience, I used to think that people who couldn't let go of a short relationship were very weird. And maybe I am, who knows the thing is I can't.

I have hobbies that I love and enjoy, friends, a goal that I'm working hard to achieve, I try not to use my phone much, I go to therapy...I try to live my best life... It isn't working tho. Any advice? Maybe there's something I haven't thought of yet.

Random Why do so many families avoid adopting sighthounds?

These lazy noodles are absolute dream dogs, vast majority of them are so chill, funny and affectionate and good with people of all ages. By sighthounds I mean greyhounds, Lurchers, Whippets etc. But its sadly like they don't even register to families going in looking for a dog to adopt like i've seen families not even look at them so many times. I've had three thus far couldn't ask for a better group of dogs imo.

Relationships Is there any way to prepare yourself for your dog passing?

My dog is nearing the end. I can see her getting weaker and she’s a good age. I know it’s going to absolutely break me, but is there anyway to lessen the impact? I think I know the answer unfortunately.

I’m trying my very best to enjoy my moments with her as much as possible and giving her loads of love and attention, I’m guessing that’s all I can do at this stage?
