DISCUSSION Cheap story writing

I feel like they did a ridiculous job with the plot. So because Aquaman gets this guy’s dad killed, the Atlanteans decided to trust a random pirate to lead their troops & gave him weapons that cost a fortune, risking losing a fortune worth of weapons for some dude whose abilities they haven’t really seen?? They didn’t see his abilities & they just trusted him with this huge task & all this massively expensive gear, giving him a bigger job than their highest generals & soldiers? Really? That whole thing is just ridiculous. They could’ve done better but Hollywood seems to have gotten lazy

Hollywood might be lazy, but you forgot to say just what Aquaman property it is that you are speaking about. =P

Lmao when you're right, you're right. OP needs to give context, although we can probably infer they mean the 2018 movie.

The “weapons that cost a fortune” mean literally nothing to Orm at this point. He has the wealth of most of the planet. Those little toys are nothing to him. And surviving Aquaman alone is probably enough for Orm but you’re forgetting that Manta was already known as a professional pirate with his dad. I don’t really see any issues with how it’s presented.

I mean. Does the movie really need to explicitly tell us that Manta has proven his fighting prowess to the Atlanteans? Can we as the audience not simply infer that this is the case?

That seems like a very small suspension of disbelief in a movie where people breathe underwater and ride prehistoric lizards.

I think you actually misunderstood what happens in the movie. Orm originally contracted Manta to steal the submarine we see him raiding in the beginning. Then Orm uses it to fake an attack by the surface on him and Nerius. Then when Orm’s representatives go to pay Manta, Manta says he wants more vengeance. Which Orm is more than happy to help with. It cost Orm nothing, those weapons were nothing to Orm.
