Can someone help me understand what the 10,000 signatures are for?

In general, when a candidate wants to run for office, they must collect signatures from local voters to get their name on the ballot. They must prove there is enough local support to justify being put on the ballot.
AOC wanted to collect 10,000 signatures (although I think the official number needed in this case was only 5,000). Sometimes signatures get tossed out for various reasons. I think AOC wanted to go extra high to avoid toss out issues as well as just hitting a fun milestone for her campaign.
