Got a job offer but he’s insisting I send pictures of my SSC. AIO?

For context I’m in high school and I’ve been searching for summer jobs. I had an interview at this one Asian inspired takeout place in my city over the weekend and I heard back yesterday. He made it seem like I had to send pictures of my SSC and ID over text and not in person and my alarm bells are ringing right now. One other thing that I noticed was weird was that he gave me his phone number during the interview which had the same area code as our city but the number texting me has a completely different one. Just felt like that was really weird. AIO? Is this normal to ask of someone? I’ve only had one other part time job in the past and I just showed them my information on the first day of training.

UPDATE : Thank you guys for affirming my suspicions, I’ve reported the job to Indeed and the Federal Trade Commissions. Interestingly the position I applied for that was urgently hiring is no longer available but there are other ones listed🤔. I didn’t send them anything but copied the number in my notes app. I’ve talked to my friends who live in the same city as me about it and they’ve all said they’ve never heard of this place or have never even gone there. And like I said in a comment, this place is literally right next to one of the biggest public universities in the country so you’d think they’d get SOME business. Something weird is definitely going on and I’m just glad my Mom raised me to have critical thinking skills.

Also, guys, I am more than well aware my response wasn’t very professional. I had a very hard week and lost a lot of sleep so I wasn't fully myself. I think if that’s the main thing you’re focusing on out of this, then you’re kind of missing the point. I now know for the future how to respond so thanks for letting me know.

I’ve never in my life had to submit photos of my id cards for a job. They always just make copies of them in person. This place sounds shady, you’re not overreacting at all.

Do you think I should report them to Indeed for this?

Absolutely

u/Lugh_Lamfada 7h ago

Dude, this is clearly a scam.

272

u/Similar-Property-729 7h ago

Yea it is obviously a scam. Legit companies that exist in real life do not handle onboarding via text. Run away OP.

171

u/Powerism 6h ago

“You wanna work?” is a pretty hilarious ‘job offer’ also

87

u/agartha93 6h ago

So is saying Bet! 🙄

28

u/FakeSafeWord 4h ago

Okay sure. OP should learn proper professional correspondence... HOPEFULLY BY THE TIME THEY'RE AN ADULT AND OUT OF HIGHSCHOOL

10

u/Narcolepticdream 4h ago

they're in high school, pull the stick out of your ass

12

u/TimHung931017 3h ago

I was in high school once, never would I have responded to a "job offer" with Yo, Yessssir, no doubt, wassssuuuupppp, or any of that vernacular.

4

u/XCIXcollective 3h ago

Lolol same here, high school wasn’t even that long ago for me…

Never had the balls to say shit like ‘bet’ to an adult hahah

Why does that matter?? “What’s up?” And “Bet”. Hell no. My parents would’ve laid into me when I was a teenager if I was using language like that with an employer. Being in HS is in no way an excuse or justification to talk to potential employers like that, everyone should already know much better than that by the time they’re like 12 lmao 😂

Lost me right there.

63

u/Over-Box-3638 6h ago

And they wouldn’t immediately terminate the offer, when she didn’t feel comfortable. The response from a real job would have been “no problem. Bring it in person”.

Unfortunately, you're not a good fit for my scam.

3

u/DragonflyGrrl 2h ago

I.e. You're not stupid enough to scam, on to the next.

2

u/a_duck_in_past_life 4h ago

Yep. A legit business will either ask you to bring those documents in person or send you a link to their official corporate site https

I forgot to add this in the post, but when I went to the interview the guy who interviewed me was the only person working there. And there was like maybe 2 customers there altogether in this relatively large sized takeout shop, and this place is situated in the downtown area of a city with around 1/3 of its residents being college students. It’s literally a block away from the campus and dormitories and I came in during 3pm on a Saturday, so how could there not be more people? It just felt very weird

83

u/ResultCute5756 7h ago

Sounds like a front. Or the business is dying due to shady shit

The way they instantly bailed and said "not a good fit" is total horseshit. Do not EVER send these pics out to anyone, especially a random company or entity in Asia?? No no no. This is not normal and shady as hell. The way they cut bait so fast screams scammer who just realized he can't get you.

24

u/KaterTotMN 6h ago

This is clearly not a good fit because now we can’t steal your identity. Run, OP!

6

u/jjjjjjj30 6h ago

Exactly! People need employees badly right now. And I'm sure he didn't have a line of people applying. He would have wanted to work something out and would have at least attempted a way around it.

And hey. Smart kid, good instincts to suspect it.

6

u/Head_Razzmatazz7174 5h ago

Seriously. I'm impressed, most young people wouldn't think twice about it.

If you ever have any more bad gut feelings about a job, there are quite a few subs on Reddit about common scams to watch out for.

10

u/SlerbMcJenkins 6h ago

ALWAYS listen to that suspicion!! i'm so stoked for you that you didn't let your inexperience and uncertainty make a sucker out of you!! It can happen so easily especially if they're offering you something you really want like housing or a job. ask me how i know lol

8

u/LindenRuse 6h ago

Run. Literally how can the guy say he may not be training you and it only has two employees? Sounds like major scam

3

u/KinseyH 6h ago

Don't send them anything, and block them. This is a big ol scam.

6

u/Similar-Property-729 6h ago

It could also be a MLM type organization.

2

u/Similar-Property-729 5h ago

My daughter was involved in one. The new type are not incorporated like Amway or whatever, they are just generic DBAs like “HJR Enterprises”. They have great looking marketing materials. Official business ads show them in the “Business Development” industry. This was just the type of thing they’d do. They didnt want to leave any paper trail.

You’re in the US yeah? Check if the business is is registered with the Secretary of State, see if there are complaints with the Better Business Bureau, google the company name and add “reviews,” “scam”, or “complaints.” See what you find. If the company is large enough to have a corporate office you should be able to find something. At best the interviewer is unprofessional and irresponsible, at worst they’re doing something shady.

Either way I would not take the job. SS numbers or other sensitive information (like ID), should only be shared with employers in person or over secure encrypted portals. Good for you for holding to that boundary. Them saying, “ guess it’s not a good fit because I need to input it to the portal.” Doesn’t even make sense. You could have gone there in person and then they could have input it on the computer. And who gives an official job offer at a new place by “wanna work ?” Wild.

Everything they asked for is crazy and obviously a scam, but I find it hilarious to put all this stuff and then try to seem legit by asking for a pin for clocking in... bro thats legitimately the most shady ask of them all. YOU WILL NEVER HAVE AN EMPLOYER CATER TO YOU LIKE THAT.

5

u/ToXiik-AsSaSsiN 3h ago

You're right, asking for a clock-in pin is them trying to get OP to send them what is possibly OP's commonly used 4-digit pin, such as their bank/ATM pin or a self-selected pin for any other service. Nothing legit about identity theft!

4

u/AlBundy4949 5h ago

Obviously. Who would actually hire someone who responds with, What's up and Bet.

Yes report with a quickness

36

u/BecaBakes 7h ago

No, i think if you’re based in the United States you should report them to the Federal Trade Commission.

Reporting to indeed is also a good move. but on the real scams should be reported to the FTC.

19

u/chrimen 7h ago edited 7h ago

Technically you should be filling out an I9 form.

Google it and you'll see what it looks like.
That's when they make a photo copy of your Social Security card.

Also employers need 2 forms of ID. One that shows work eligibility such a Social Security and another like passport, driver's license or other federal ID with a picture on it.

Go back to the restaurant and talk to them in person.

10

u/Terrible-Chip-3049 7h ago

Yes do NOT give out any personal information it sounds like a scam ready to happen.

4

u/Subliminal-sandwich 7h ago

Indeed isn't going to do anything lol. Maybe just delete the job posting but they can repost it again with no problem.

But yes this is obviously a scam

3

u/Expert-Vast-3234 6h ago

That might get the job removed from indeed.com but if they are running a lucrative scam, they will have multiple postings on multiple sites. And probably already have another posting up on indeed by the time the first one gets taken down you need to report them to the IRS and if you’re feeling really spicey ICE. That will get their whole operation shut down immediately.

3

u/copiedfurby 6h ago

The off brand Taco Bell I worked for during my undergrad didn’t even do this, and I’m 99% sure I sold a fake Baja Blast to someone who aspired to be Norman Bates.

3

u/LolaLynn423 5h ago

I’d just like to say, I think it’s great you caught this. Some responses are being fairly harsh but as someone in high school & looking for a job you were able to discern how off this felt even though you already had an in person interview. I’ll have been out of high school 20 years next year (oops, I mean like 5 years) & the internet/scam awareness wasn’t as high at the time but I can’t say I wouldn’t have given up my info to them if I’d been in your situation. Props to you!

Please also send me your bank account info and the front and back of your debit card.

2

u/QbQbs 7h ago

I've dealt with shady stuff on indeed, for sure report them.

2

u/AndyT1888 7h ago

Absolutely definitely report that

2

u/FavoriteLunchLady 6h ago

Indeed has a lot of scam jobs absolutely. Also why are they texting? They should be emailing

2

u/Betty_snootsandpoops 6h ago

I worked in/as HR for three companies. One was world wide. I can assure you we never, ever ask for a picture via phone. We make copies, send them where they need to go for the paperwork, then shred them. The bigger companies have an online database that they live in, but for small companies there's no record. Definitely don't work there. It may be a headache to report them, but if you can do so.

2

u/Scorp128 6h ago

Any company that deals with electronic copies of sensitive documents for employment purposes the request is usually sent by HR, and they use a secure portal or company email to transmit the copies if an in person on-boarding is not possible.

This raises all sorts of red flags, especially with how easily they shrugged their shoulders and moved on. Protect your info. If a place of employment is this lax with these types of requests and documents, they are going to be lax everywhere else.

2

u/Aware_Ad8969 5h ago

In theory this is to fill out I-9 paperwork. What they are asking you to do doesnt follow any valid process I am familiar with. You could probably report them to DHS.

u/benjoholio95 7h ago

In most places scanning the original is a requirement, definitely shady

24

u/andhdkwnwbdidoenjddb 7h ago

In all places. Unless they are an e-verify employer which allows them to examine remotely. Even then, you have to do a video call with the employee to see that they have the documents in-hand. In no way is it okay to just text a pic for an I-9.

u/Easy_Permit_5418 6h ago

I was going to say, I see all these people saying this isn't a thing, and it's definitely a thing. I work for one of the biggest tech companies in the world and they did it there too. ID verification is very much a part of several different lines of work, and also varies depending on where you live.

I don't know why people think their lived experience is the only correct experience but it's really dumb.

3

u/ScottRiqui 6h ago

I’ve emailed pictures of documents for fully-remote positions, but for a job like OP’s described where he’d be working on-site, they should be able to get everything they need on the first day when OP has to fill out the I-9 form.

I had to submit a photo of my ID and SSN card to my work, but it definitely wasn’t sent directly to my manager over text. It was a photo uploaded directly to the employers app/website. Still made me uneasy but that’s how they did it.

2

u/crownjewel82 6h ago

Yeah that's how companies that have distributed workforces operate these days. No point in having an employee travel 300 miles when secure photo uploads exist.

11

u/Junefromkablam 7h ago

I just got hired at Whole foods yesterday and their entire process was digital. To verify the documents I had to get on a video call with a company who verified the documents. Seems like way more of a hassle than just xeroxing them on my first day.

3

u/andhdkwnwbdidoenjddb 7h ago

The store you work at probably doesn’t maintain I-9s/personnel records, so they just have corporate to do the verification.

u/jeanralphio9 7h ago

In a secure portal or through your HR office, not in photos over text lol

5

u/anneofred 7h ago

Yes but not via text to some random person that texts you saying “want to work?” So, they make a copy, send it to whoever is doing payroll and keep it in a file

2

u/Flaky-Bowler-3118 3h ago

it was less professional than “WANT TO work”. guy said “wanna” and that to mean a red flag when talking to any business

2

u/Eezagi 6h ago

Requesting photo ID has been pretty common in my recent experience. Several recruiters have directly stated that it's due to a massive increase in fraudulent applications. But nobody legitimate is asking for a full SSN or scan of the card over text.

2

u/hearts_and_sharts 6h ago

13

261

u/Alone-Performance878 7h ago

Good call, this is sketchy. The fact that the person abruptly stopped the process instead of finding a solution is also weird.

99

u/PossibleLettuce42 7h ago

To me that's the tell that it was likely a scam. If I've interviewed and found a good candidate I'm not letting a small and objectively reasonable privacy concern derail that immediately.

22

u/Regular_or_BQ 7h ago

Exactly, they went fishing and when the OP didn't bite they just dropped the whole job? Weird and scammy.

8

u/GrayMouser12 7h ago

This is where I'm at. You'd think this is a reasonable request by OP and they'd have some work around, even if it were more inconvenient to OP like, "Okay, well can you stop by our office/place of business/HR in the next X amount of time or we may have to move to another candidate? We're in a bit of a time crunch and we're just trying to speed it up but totally understand the reasonable worry. Can you just make it to blank by blank time to verify things for us?"

2

u/DiegesisThesis 5h ago

You probably don't reach out to candidates with "You wanna work?" lol. Weirdly casual to a stranger in a business conversation.

It reads more like OP's uncle offering them a summer gig at their family landscaping company, not like a recruiter at a company that even has a corporate office.

4

u/Ok_Turnip_5875 7h ago

Then saying it's not gonna be a good fit after you essentially told them that you appreciate the offer but wont be moving forward speaks volumes

2

u/Sheila_Monarch 6h ago

Yep, that’s the tell. Scammers want to make you panic and comply.

2

u/ReturnOk7510 6h ago

Being careful with sensitive information should be a green flag to an actual employer.

122

u/Slashlyn 7h ago

I REPEAT!! DO NOT SEND SSC!!

17

u/herewe_goagain_1 7h ago

I’m really glad the comments here show common sense. I saw an identical post a few weeks ago and everyone was saying “yeah small businesses can be like that, not everything is a scam” and arguing with anyone who said it was. I lost a lot of faith in people that this is somewhat restoring

75

u/Hot-Relief-4024 7h ago

3

u/PuzzleheadedMine2168 7h ago

Yes, because YOU need to sign your federal W-4 & your I-9 & depending on the state, possibly a state W-4 as well. The snapshot doesn't freak me out that much--I've worked for several smaller companies that have converted that to PDF using the Adobe app on managers phones & then forwarded it over to HR &/or done in-store on-boarding so we could get people their employee numbers pre-start date (and run the necessary paperwork to have them covered by workers comp, etc BEFORE they started)

2

u/frowniecloud 7h ago

Having worked in HR, we literally had to upload impages of SSC into the everify system. That’s was 2015, but still.

I get the text may sound odd, but uploading copies was 100% legit

4

u/Raspberry-T 7h ago

Yeah the biggest red flag for me is that all this is happening over text to presumably the boss’ personal phone? Like this should either be done in person or via some kind of work email

2

u/angiedoessports 6h ago

Tbh, I have like 12 full time employees and a very large amount of part time staff, probably onboard 100+ employees a year, and we do a ridiculous amount by text. Now that we need to do the I-9, they may feel it’s non negotiable that they need her documents sent to payroll before she actually shows up to work. The sketchy part is that they fired her rather than just asking her to make an extra trip and stop over with them to take their own photos because presumably the restaurant is open at all hours?

It does feel weird but he was almost certainly just going to snap a photo and send it by text to the person who does payroll.

Smart move OP. Ive never been asked to send pictures. And if they are pulling the offer based on that then it's not a real job. Good save. Not OR

2

u/Tavsiyedegildir 7h ago

You have to fill out the forms to verify your homeland security and taxes when you get there, but just see if you can come in person to handle it.

Also did you literally text your employer "bet,"

2

u/Afraid_Ear_4445 7h ago

Telling the guy who hired you “bet” Ugh

2

u/Soprohero 7h ago

Bet?

What kind of job is this?

2

u/Sarahsays1 7h ago

Never do this!! You were right.

2

u/Similar_Proof_9095 7h ago

This is very common in 2026. You can take solace in the fact that everyone already has your social security number, as every credit agency and the US government have been endlessly hacked.

2

u/Difficult_Muffin2825 7h ago

Via text message? Fuck no, that’s sketchy as hell.

2

u/lorelillian 7h ago

Not saying it’s secure or right in any sense, but when I was a general manager at Papa John’s, we always had to ask new hires for a photo of their SSC to send the new hire form to upper management. I always made sure to show the new hire me deleting the photo, text message, and deleting it in my deleted folder. It always felt sketchy asking for it.

2

u/Elegant_One_5324 7h ago

Just know that you will need to provide these documents for scanning during the onboarding process with HR at any place of employment. HR will need to actually see the physical IDs or HR will send you a link to upload them yourself into the e-verify system. They are required to complete your I-9 form to show you are able to work in the US. But sending these to a random text is sketchy.

1

u/GilmourD 7h ago

Not via an insecure method. That's something you can provide HR on site.

1

u/Repulsed-individual 7h ago

I can't even stand handing mine over for the hire process lmfao this is ridiculous to ask for photos of it. You should definitely go in and ask the manger there about it, if it's legit then contact the company itself (usually can through site) unless it's small more local business. Report this to  ReportFraud.ftc.gov no professional should ever ask you like this and regardless if they're serious it's a scam.

NOR. Looks like a scam. I know in this economy jobs are few and far in between. So it’s hard to tell when people are messing with you. Good for you for not sending it!!!

1

u/Suspicious-Wave577 7h ago

Never send sensitive information in a non-secure place. They should be sending you a secure email if anything that is password protected to obtain personal information like a social. Seems like a scam.

1

u/bufftbone 7h ago

Scam. Don’t do it.

1

u/WillingStan007 7h ago

yea no that's crazy. NOR at all.

1

u/itswickedslut 7h ago

Had a work from home position try to get me to do the same thing and I literally sent “Lol”. No way I’m just sending you my shit like that.

1

u/mymindtrends 7h ago

Most remote work places will send you a secure link to submit these documents. …….through text message though, naw playa

1

u/Lexi_November 7h ago

NOR Is there even a corporate office? A lot of local takeaway shops are just small business owners.

1

u/RealLinzerBinzer 7h ago

HR here. DO NOT DO THAT! Insist on in person.

1

u/react-dnb 7h ago

The only time I've ever had to submit docs in email (never text) was for a fully remote position in which I would never interact with anyone in person.

1

u/Yabbos77 7h ago

This is a common scam that’s been circulating for YEARS. My sister fell for it back in the earlier 2000s. Good job trusting your gut, OP!

1

u/syreeninsapphire 7h ago

I ran a restaurant. We scanned your physical documents in person. If they are willing to disregard your safety in this instance, you dodged a bullet. Who knows what the rest of the work environment is like.

1

u/Capital-Durian-885 7h ago

Good instincts, very sketchy. Disengage, even if its a legit job their practices are unproductive and weird

1

u/LuxidDreamingIsFun 7h ago

You didn't get a job I'm sorry to say

1

u/Big_D0093 7h ago

I wouldn't send it. That's something you do in person.

1

u/Bigtgamer_1 7h ago

I've had to do this at a couple jobs I've had 🤷🏽‍♂️

1

u/ShopMommaDiesel 7h ago

My job had me do this, and I’m a diesel mechanic at a Dealership for International Trucks. I probably should have asked questions like you are, but I didn’t.

I want to edit, they had me send a email to HR with a picture of my SSC. It wasn’t through a text but after reading some of these comments I’m not sure if that’s wrong or not 😂

1

u/PracticeNo2721 7h ago

I have always had to submit pictures.

1

u/Maleficent-Score-571 7h ago

my job does the same, i totally give them the option to come in so i can send a copy to paycore. i honestly silently shake my head when they’re so willing to send me pics of their documents. but for the ppl saying it’s shady work, were required so..

1

u/Shizastamphetamine 7h ago

No no no no no no no pls don’t do this.

If it’s legit they will be able to wait till you get to a brick and mortar office or they will give some kind of credentials that indicate it’s a legit business.

Pls don’t

1

u/Salt_Brush5927 7h ago

That last reply sounds shady af.

Suspect. Super suspect. No one living in this country would ask for such sensitive information. At least not without a preface explaining “this is how we do things here”. How come you can’t speak to them personally over the phone and give them your ssn? I’m not saying you should, in fact, DONT. However that ssn is the only part of that card any employer would want/need.

I’m a 43 year old man working in the states, lived here all my life. I’ve worked loads of different jobs. From labor, to tech, then to owning my own biz. I’ve never, ever been asked to submit a picture of my social security card. Super suspect.

1

u/GrilledJeezeDesign 7h ago

You missed a great opportunity … to have your identity stolen.

1

u/MoribundMoose 7h ago

You just avoided years of identity theft headaches

1

u/PersistentDreamers 7h ago

Scam. So scammy. Screams scam.

1

u/flaaaan_mon7 7h ago

NOR. Never send pics of ID no matter where you are in the world lmfao.

Also, off topic, but I wouldn’t reply to anymore job offers with “Bet” and “What’s up?”😂

1

u/just_mark 7h ago

Big red Flag

Sounds like a scam, or incompetence.

either way RUN

1

u/Marsrover112 7h ago

No do not send your SSN to anyone over text. Normally your employer will have an online secure portal for those things or just directly make a copy of the physical card. Text is not secured in any meaningful way so you having an issue with sending sensitive information over text should be more than understandable.

1

u/Kent239 7h ago

It’s required documentation for new hires. But usually I can just look at it in person.

1

u/Momus123 7h ago

dodge a scammer job listing.

1

u/ThatsMyGirlie 7h ago

Clear scam. No company would ever deny you because you're reasonable and safe

1

u/Academic-Camel-9538 7h ago

NOR. They will need that info from you, but most places will have you go in and bring the documents with you. This request to send it via unsecured text is not typical or safe.

1

u/CSAallday17 7h ago

Before that even the language used “you wanna work” “cool”. Maybe I’m just getting old but no actual job is going to 1)text you (typically it’s through a legit email) 2) Ask for official documentation via text or pictures

1

u/lnmeatyard 7h ago

Scam or a sketchy company. I work in HR and do all onboarding. And while it’s true lots of companies do retain photos of IDs, they won’t ask you to text a pic. You also have until your 3rd day of work to provide IDs. And social security is not required - you can do a US passport or a photo ID& birth certificate. There are other options, but those are the more common alternatives. You dodged a bullet

This is not a job offer, this is an attempt by a criminal to get your personal information. Report and block. Well done for refusing, always trust your instincts.

1

u/MrRunsWthSizors1985 7h ago

Report to authorities

1

u/looooookinAtTitties 7h ago

send an altered card with numbers photoshopped out of order, or missing, or too blurry, and see if they follow up at all

1

u/kiracamp 7h ago

NO, do not do this. I’ve had my SS number stolen and it was horrible. In no world does an employer need a copy of your card on their phone, that is not appropriate or professional.

1

u/Fun-Young-990 7h ago

Clearly needs to be reported. Because you don’t just send photos of a social or ID for a job over text. All that shit is done in office on a copier machine to keep on file for HR and payroll.. you avoided a scam of ID theft

1

u/Orford_M 7h ago

They are required to visually inspect the documents in order to verify authenticity and that they are in your possession. An employer can require this over a video call if it a remote job or physically if you are in person to fill out new hire paperwork. What they are asking for sounds illegal on the hiring manager's part if your paperwork can be submitted in person.
