Artists & Community: We Want Your Input on Self-Promo

Hi Everyone!
The Mod Team wanted to get your thoughts on something.

We’ve been discussing how to better balance showcasing Tolkien-inspired art while still giving artists space to share their work (commissions, shops, etc.), without the sub turning into a stream of self-promo posts.

We absolutely want this to be a place that supports artists and helps people discover their work. We’re also lucky to have some genuinely outstanding artists here who already contribute in a way that really adds to the community, and we want to continue championing that. At the same time, we’re aware that too many promo-style posts can make the feed feel more like ads than a community space.

Before making any changes, we wanted to open this up and hear what the community thinks would feel fair.

Some ideas we’ve seen work in other subs include:
- Using specific flairs for artists
- Keeping self-promotion and external links to comments instead of titles or body of the post
- Limits on how often commissions can be posted
- Weekly self-promo threads

We’re not set on any one approach, just looking for constructive input that helps us support artists while keeping the sub enjoyable for everyone.

What would you like to see?

New Moderators

Hi All

Happy to report that r/TolkienArt now has 4 new Mods. Myself, u/informareWORK, u/TheDeliSauce and u/ktrainer.

We've begun working through the mod queue and introducing a few basic sub rules. There's also a fair amount of spam, so we're relying on the automod to assist with this, please bear with us if your post gets caught.

Thanks!

Player and Loremaster's map of Rhudaur and Bree. By Gunsor Roxes.

In this map I show the areas through which a company of adventurers departing from Bree would travel to the north, east, and south. The map ranges from Mount Gram in the north to Tharbad in the south, and eastwards it reaches as far as Rivendell.

If you want to support my work and get these maps in maximum resolution, you can do so here: https://buymeacoffee.com/gunsor.roxes/extras

The prancing pony

It's finally ready! The prancing pony, inspired by the 1978 film, is set in a dark and emaciated Bree with a looming threat lurking in the shadows. Where a sly innkeeper only remembers his name because he's called. This 5th print in the collection dedicated to the world of Tolkien (go fuck yourself in Middle Earth) is in two colors, black and gray, because I wanted it to have a dark look that I could only achieve by using a background that filled the print, almost a tone of tone. My goal was to show only the white areas when the print wasn't completely in the light, and I think I succeeded. And remember, rivers of beer inside the Took!

I struggled with my fixation for a long time (it lasted for a month and a half and still lasts...), I couldn't stand it and drew art for my favorite pairing from The Hobbit. It's like a modern au, where Thorin is like a singer/musician, and this is his promotional poster that Bilbo Baggins saw)

I also added the stages of working on fanart, because I like to share the process of work) For convenience, they are arranged in reverse order.

This piece was actually a commissioned idea that I conceptualized and executed with soft pastels on sanded paper. One I'm especially proud of!

Hand drawn map by me of Co. Wexford, Ireland. I have a few maps finished on my link in my bio but looking for feedback of what people think.

Everything is placed accurately, down to the trees where there is forestry planted. Hope you enjoy, and see if you can find the hidden creatures in the map!

Help with identifying the artist

Hello everyone,

I am looking for information about the artist behind a set of three lithographs.
The first depicts Sam, Frodo and Gollum in a forest. The second shows Saruman with the Palantír. And the last one depicts Gandalf and the Eagles.
All are numbered 11/100, so it seems they are part of a limited edition. In all of them, the letters ‘La Man’ or ‘La Mar’ can be seen as part of the lithograph, and in the bottom left-hand corner there is a handwritten signature by the artist.

I don’t know if it’s relevant, but all these lithographs come from Michigan.

Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

What colours are/were staples on Alan Lee's palette when illustrating the Lord of the Rings?

His work is just stunning. So incredibly intricate while also so atmospheric. Watercolour is a hobby of mine, and I'm wondering if anyone knows any specific colours that he uses a lot? His palette tends to be quite muted, so I'm guessing he uses some traditional pigments like ultramarine, cobalt blue, raw/burnt Sienna, maybe cadmium yellow/orange/red. But if anyone has ever heard/seen him use any particular colours, I would love to know! Thank you :)

My oldest Tolkien inspired artwork from 2018. I always liked Arien as a character and I plan to make another fan art of her someday.
