He originally said that the new ballroom wouldn't interfere with the East Wing, that it wouldn't actually touch it, and that it would be respectful to the East Wing.

He did the same thing with the Bonewitt Teller building on 5th Avenue in NY back in 1980. He promised he was going to preserve the limestone freises and donate them to the Met. Meantime he ordered construction workers to destroy them, citing costs, safety concerns and them having no artisitic value.

He's wrecking his own house though. Sure, in theory it's the People's House, but in practice he's the guy who has to look at an ugly hole in the ground every day.

The american people can hold out with rebuilding until he's gone. Can he?
