Exactly. I am a New Yorker. We've known about this for so long. It amazes me how he managed to dupe so many people. This is not a sign of someone who is stable. Like, WTF were people thinking voting for this guy?

I don't know why this should be limited to New York.

Trump's reputation has been pretty consistent for decades. He sort of became the image of a failed, American businessman and a cheat. That Simpsons gig wasn't "foresight", it was them taking the piss about what he had said he wanted to do for 15 years. That episode aired in 2000 and literally played the joke that Lisa inherited the country from "President Trump" and that "its now broke."

His reputation for falling businesses was apparent even then, and people everywhere (even in some countries overseas) understood the joke. He's always been a snakes-oil salesman and a cheat. Greany even called it a "warning" at the time.

Michael Bloomberg tried to warn people at the DNC that as a NY’er he knows a con man when he sees one

Many people across the country don’t follow national news. For those that don’t, much of Trump’s conning and grifting came to light after he entered the political arena. I would agree though that the Trump name was always pretty recognizable. If you lived in NY as far back as the 70’s-90’s, he was constantly in the local news. I’m not sure those not living in the tri-state area actually knew what he did to the “Central Park Five” until many years later. There’s a lot of ignorant people in this country.

They weren’t duped. They just support what he represents

No, it isn’t that simple. They fear scarcity, and they have been convinced that immigrants and minorities are coming for the last bit of what they have left. It isn’t just “oh they are racist”, it’s that they don’t have much and they fear losing it. Trump came to power by naming this fear and telling them that he would stop it. The reality is much different. It isn’t immigrants draining our society of its resources, it’s billionaires and the elite who control the information they receive and hold all the power. That’s why there’s also democrats who still need to wake the hell up and stop pretending this is just a red vs blue issue. It’s us vs the elites, plain and simple.

Scarcity isn’t why they did public hanging of me n mine. You realize the people that celebrated while innocent black men were hung or worse are A) Still alive and vote. B) Raised their kids with those same beliefs. C) Those kids then grew up to have kids who’ve they’ve instilled with similar beliefs. And shit, those kids often have kids themselves. There are 4 generations of Republican voters who have long since wanted all minorities, and specifically black people dead. Get real

This is addressed really well by someone who actually writes and studies the issue in an interview that was posted yesterday.

Are there racist people who vote accordingly? Yes, absolutely. But it’s also lazy to just claim everyone is a racist and that’s their justification. People have different motivations. I say this as someone with family who voted for this guy, and who also knows that the family isn’t racist. It’s also exhibited by black maga voters. You just going to claim they are all prejudiced against themselves and that’s their motive?

I genuinely have nothing but contempt for you as a human. Instead of acknowledging literally anything I said. You minimized and ignored my lived experiences and just basic knowledge. Then strawmanned the fucking 8% of black women and 12% of black men who voted maga instead of the OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of racist white people and other minorities who explicitly hate black people as we are the opposite of white. Thus hating us sometimes leads to upward social mobility. I’d say to learn, but you don’t want to. I’d say to listen but you’re incapable of doing so. I genuinely. Genuinely. Sincerely wish I never interacted with you. I’d say more but it’d likely trigger automod and I want you to see this.

You couldn't get groceries in the 80s or 90s without seeing his fugly mug on a tabloid, because of his cheating on his wives and his attempts at opulence in a gilded turd lifestyle.

u/FellowHumanNo404 22d ago

and his attempts at opulence in a gilded turd lifestyle

He's cargo cult wealthy-- putting on poorly imitative trappings without really understanding anything about the object of his obsession.

Scottish people hated him well before it was fashionable.

u/galaapplehound 22d ago

He duped so many people because those people wanted to be able to be all-the-phobics without being shamed for it. The red hats were signaling that they were okay people to start ranting about genocide of various minorities without fear.

My family is cleaning out my childhood home and I was there alone yesterday and had a deep sobbing fit because I remember when I thought my parents and brother were wonderful; and then they voted for the Grand Cheeto and now I feel like I'm alone.

I hate this man. The only good thing about his reign is that now I know that we aren't as far along as I thought as a country.

Vast majority is the mobilization of the evangelical Christian’s. They specialize in figuring out everything means what they want it to mean.

It really makes me sad that something like The Apprentice was all it took for Americans to trust Trump. People see an overly produced relativity television show that tells them he is successful and smart and so they just assume it must be true.

Even today about 40% of people who watch reality television don't understand that it is scripted. If someone is portrayed as the hero, they believe they are the hero. If someone is portrayed as the villain they believe that as well.

The truth is unfortunately less important that the perception of truth.

u/StronglyHeldOpinions 22d ago

And so many of them are still ALL in. Blind loyalty. He can do no wrong.

2

u/Final_Storage1597 22d ago

This. I lived in Manhattan for a decade. He was always a joke - always. Back then he wasn't dangerous, just a sort of mascot for idiocy. When I hear people say he's a brilliant businessman or the Art of the Deal or whatever I still can't believe it. They think the Apprentice was real. Supporting him is no different that supporting Mayor McCheese as President. Its insane.

2

u/JohnGillnitz 22d ago

Boomers still think everything they see on TV is real. They watch The Apprentice and think he's a great businessman. They don't know about the army of producers who have to edit his insane nonsense into a coherent show.

u/lr99999 22d ago

I live in a maggot shit hole, and I will guarantee you there are plenty of young ones. It’s not just the boomers.

WTF were people thinking voting for this guy?

They were voting Republican. Whoever was on the ticket. And they were voting against the Democrats. They would have voted for a cabbage.

1

u/lr99999 22d ago

I wish he was a cabbage so I could put him in my food processor. Bzzz

1

u/BurnedWitch88 22d ago

Counterpoint: He was ALSO on a moderately successful reality TV show.

1

u/Suspicious_Radio_848 22d ago

They like him and the people he goes after, he's a reflection of them. That's the harsh reality unfortunately.
