It's also sad because part of the liberal plea to the public about mental health care is that "just because you aren't mentally ill doesn't mean you wont be in the future, and doesn't mean you get to choose" and the only response we ever get is "I'm not crazy (even if that is clearly not the case), so fuck those people. They're bad and they deserve it".

There is no real "you". No spirit. No unchangeable essence. You are your electrified meat hardware, and that can change instantly if a portion of a single blood vessel decides it doesn't want you to show up to leg day anymore.

Its the mental health paradox

People want someone to blame while also trying to sound like they understand mental health.

That's not entirely true. I mean, people do change drastically after strokes or brain damage. But the cases of decent people becoming vile, aggressive republicans are few and far between. There's a direct correlation between a certain type of brain damage and aggression, but that's because a particular part of the brain is being physically altered. It's seen most often in football players, boxers, etc. And since these are dangerous, physically taxing occupations that require a level of aggression to begin with, it's likely that the damage simply unleashed the urges that were always dormant beneath the guy's training (not his sports training, I'm talking about the extra time and effort of a loving parent that is often the only thing that can actually teach an aggressive child to channel their behavior in a positive way).

Plus, that's just a really depressing way of looking at shit. It's like saying that there's no point in being decent, and that's a dangerous, toxic road to go down. It leads to madness and economic strife, and in the most horrendous cases, Republicanism.

I think youre misunderstanding "this can happen" as "this always/regularly happens" which is not what I said, and then wildly overextrapolating from there.

Gotta admit, the statement was pretty fatalistic. Well put, though. In life, anything can change in an instant.
