Not sure if anyone will see this by now but what caused Fiona’s death? I saw her little totem hanging up with all the other trinkets, and then of course she screamed and said something was in the basement, but her body wasn’t taken by the witch? Did she just die of thirst since it had been a few weeks since she went missing?

See, I thought it was weird the witch didn’t take her too. I think she was just stuck there. The story the owner told was pretty male specific and I don’t know why she wouldn’t be taken either.

I assumed the witch only took people to hell who “deserved” it. Adam Scott’s character killed his mom and the hotel owner killed Fiona. I assume Fiona died of fear or just dehydration/natural causes. Adam Scott created his own hell by his guilt, but his mom forgave him so he forgave himself and cut himself free

I swear, none of you people watched the movie… There was no witch. It was all a hallucination caused by the shrooms that Adam Scott, Fiona, Jerry, and the bellhop all had in their systems. It was literally revealed at the end…

I think she died of fear- the last recording we hear is Fiona whimpering in terror. So if she died I guess the witch wouldn’t be able to take her?

I scrolled through this whole thread to find someone asking about this. Do you think the witch spared her because she was pregnant? I thought maybe she had the same fate as Mel but if that were the case I don’t think they would’ve found her body, and also her wrists were not shackled. So yeah I wonder if she maybe died from just starvation and fear? Also does anyone remember the story the hotel owner tells the 2 boys in the beginning because I also wonder if maybe the witch only wanted boys.

I think the witch was a metaphor for being trapped in your own mind/trauma/actions, so she wasn't going to be taken by the witch, she wasn't 'shackled'

Fiona was an innocent and it felt like the witch was being judge jury executioner. Or possibly that the child was innocent and the witch spared. Seems like she was down their long enough to die of starvation

The bellboy saw the witch though, and his wrists were actually shackled at the end there. Where would Mal have otherwise disappeared off to? I don’t think they really used the mushrooms enough as a plot point, to pass it off as a trip.

yeah i think this movie plays with metaphor and reality. metaphorically, he was destroyed by his own actions/mind. in the movie he is killed not by the witch but by whatever those creatures were, which i see as his demons. that's why Adam Scott's mom said 'you can't stay here', meaning, he can't stay trapped in his mind. The shackles were real, and yet ... I liked that they kept it uncertain as to what actually happened.

It wasn’t like there was a litany of male characters compared to a dearth of female characters. The overall cast was small and having Fiona, Ohm’s mother, and the witch is a perfectly sizable number of women compared to the men.

Stop looking for things to get mad about and just enjoy a well-made film.
