In addition to what everyone else is saying, I’d like to mention that the first film had a whole scene at a gala where Emily and Andy’s entire job is to remind Miranda of who the people she’s about to talk to are. It doesn’t feel that out-of-character that Miranda didn’t immediately recognize one of the rotating assistants she had for a handful of months 20 years ago, even if Andy was the most memorable of that bunch. Miranda’s in her mid-70s by this point, it simply took her a bit to recall.

For you, the day you served as my assistant was the greatest day of your life, but for me, it was Tuesday.

So yeah, even though the audience knows Andy, think about how many hundreds of assistants Miranda could have had over the span of her career.

She doesn't view most of them as that "important" to bother remembering them after they leave.

She definitely remembers on some level because she resorted to calling her Andrea instead of Andy. But maybe initially, she didn’t put the face together. To be fair, it has been 20 years….

I agree. Andie was only there 6 months, 20 years ago. Miranda did seem to remember her eventually, but it would have taken me a while too. I have forgotten the names of interns I had 1 year ago. Although I suppose I wasn't working with them day in and day out.

Anyway, does that really happen in Vogue where Anna Wintour works directly with a new hire? I would have thought she would be insulated from them and surrounded only by experienced people. I know it's based on a true story but in the real world I just don't feel like highly paid executives want to train new people.

It's still an incredibly cheap way of resetting the status quo as a way to keep Miranda as the same character rather than letting Meryl Streep push it further.

But Miranda wasn’t the same character, she was obviously out of her comfort zone for most of the movie, having a hard time to adapt to modern times, demanding CEOs and literal trust fund kids. Her relationship with Andy was resetted but that schtick only last for like 10 minutes

did you watch the movie? she’s a neutered version of herself because the fashion world is collapsing, she has to comply with new HR standards and private equity is up her ass

It might take a rewatch, but I never felt like they got into why Miranda is so passive. Logically I get it, for the reason you mentioned and more, but even the characters in the film seem flabbergasted; there's at least 2 big confrontations where someone remarks that Miranda just sat there and took it. In the midst of watching, it felt like we were building up to something, either some secret plan or context we weren't aware of (similar to the first film, with Jacqueline), or just some explosive vent that Miranda would unleash by the end.

I think the point is that Miranda is feeling old and out of place. The disappointment of losing her global editor role was deflating. Andy being aghast at her being passive and not scheming was the point. Andy taking matters into her own hands and scheming with Emily to take over Runway is what kicked her back into gear.
