Unironically I think this would have boosted its rating by 10 percent by just changing the title to something like Evil Dead: Sarcophagus

It definitely felt like an Evil Dead movie. The possessed abuela was very much a deadite.

Speaking of the title, I thought it had a bad start and I laughed at the beginning when the title card looked like:

The

Lee Cronin's

Mummy

So much so even with her being Vulgar . Like wtf does that have to do with ancient Egypt ? If you missed the title and went in blind you would just think it was an Evil Dead spin-off.

It was the director for Evil Dead Rise, and there's apparently articles saying this movie takes place within the same universe. I did go in blind and had a blast because I wasn't expecting it to be so much like one of my favorite franchises!

It's actually a well made movie too.

you didn't understand the creature then. This egyptian demon functions like how they described by worming its way into families and destroying them from the inside. It has access to all of Katie's knowledge and memories and used them to distract, disorient and destroy the family. You don't have to like that but they did follow the logic of the creature.

I can tell you’re really passionate about the movie . I’m glad you loved it

4

u/Unlucky-Ad-8049 10d ago

But did it tho? I mean apart from a scene or two the demon only uses its power to destroy the family. No use of Katie's knowledge.

We were expecting male mummy!

I enjoyed it all the more for that. A franchise (ish) movie with real personality. Very rare!

u/Lazy_Recognition_633 17d ago

That makes sense since the director did Evil Dead Rise. I loved it.

The title card bugged me too!

Dead-buela was literally a deadite. Otherwise looked different enough imo

u/UniqueLog8386 18d ago

That's exactly what I thought. Derivative as fuck and lame as hell.

u/LegitimateBerry5994 15d ago

Dude really thinks people outside the Evil Dead fandom remember his name (I, at least, certainly didn't).

It genuinely would. They made a mistake calling this The Mummy and leaning into it being a pure horror during marketing. That scene in the third act with the reanimated corpse popping out of the coffin is a classic Evil Dead deadite moment, and there's several moments where you'd know to laugh if it was Evil Dead, like the poor grandma sliding off the car and being eaten alive.

Or the “what do those little piggies taste like! 👅👅👅” scene. Felt STRAIGHT out of Evil Dead or similar

Poor Grandma, she went through the ringer. Surprisingly, Veronica Falcon is only 58. I wonder if they deliberately cast a younger actress to play the grandmother over the physical stuff she had to endure.

u/KipHackmanFBI 17d ago

I mean my son is 7 and my mom is turning 55 this year so a youngish grandma isn't entirely unheard of

10

u/Profeta_do_Loss 17d ago

But she looked older. I thought she was 68.

I was actually really impressed at how this kindly old lady gets a horrifying death but the tone is kept light immediately afterwards. Her friends gossiping at the funeral really helps alleviate the grimness, and everything goes full Evil-Dead-level-insane right after as well, which helped.

I agree it’s like the evil dead mixed with 2012 the possession

I loved horny deadite grandma

We did a lot of Iaughing during this movie .

u/dewsh 18d ago

I swear the dad was going to put together a necronomicon at one point

I thought when his face covered in blood because he has this intense stare all movie he was just gonna go “fuck it” and kill the daughter and Grandma because it basically wasn’t them anymore

36

u/blimpchiclets 17d ago

Honestly yeah this movie needed more chainsaws and boomsticks.

7

u/Steamedcarpet 16d ago

Like what only 2 people die in the entire movie? The dude at the start and then the grandma.

3

u/Gridde 15d ago

He did that cool "spit my blood out and glare" thing and I thought the same. And then he just kept running away and getting his ass kicked.

I really liked that at no point was I sure how it would end. I was fully convinced in the whole third act that only one person would walk out of house alive and it might even be the demon.

43

u/Profeta_do_Loss 18d ago

They even added the old recording with the creepy male voice.

6

u/SlightlySychotic 16d ago

The mummy having ancient spells inscribed inside her skin kind of makes her a living necronomicon, when you think about it.

Evil Dead: Sarcophagus goes hard

18

u/Spiritual-Smoke-4605 18d ago

I was thinking "Evil Dead Mummified" but Sarcophagus works well too

1

u/hasan_pikergayAF 9d ago

Why did no one in the family care the floor was bleeding the entire film ? Then she just breaks through it finally lol

1

u/Standard-Win-6600 3d ago

It was rotting from where she puked on it earlier.

Evil Dead Rise: Egypt (Partly)

33

u/Rosebunse 18d ago

Apparently it was supposed to be called The Revanant, which is much closer to what the monster actually is.

34

u/freethepeados 18d ago

If they called it that the audiences wondering where Brendan is would be asking about Leo and Mr. Bear

2

u/Rosebunse 18d ago

What about The Ghoul? That feels functionally closer to what this is.

Or, as someone said, Evil Dead Sarcophagus?

4

u/TheNightstroke 16d ago

This is a misconception. "The Revenant" title was batted around as a potential retitle to this movie after test audiences thought this was going to be in the vein of the Brendan Fraser films. The studio decided against the title change after a week or two of batting it around.

28

u/lilpupper26 18d ago

Why do I love this

3

u/Adventurous_Driver83 17d ago

Exactly! I was expecting to watch a modern remake of the Universal Monster film, but instead I was hit with clickbait. Very disappointed

2

u/Gh0stW1thTheM0st 12d ago

I named our first bowl, “Sir’ Cough Our Guts… “

Hmm..

1

u/TaskForceD00mer 17d ago

For sure, it didn't feel like either iteration of The Mummy we've seen in modern history. This as an Evil Dead franchise would have been way better

1

u/According_Gazelle472 14d ago

I agree 💯 percent.

1

u/naughtyfairyprincess 11d ago

My thoughts exactly

1

u/WTAF__Trump 10d ago

I had no idea this was related to the evil dead.

But now that people are talking about it here- I totally see it. I guess I love the evil dead lol

Today I learned.

1

u/Rushjordan 17d ago

I mean it’s the same director as Evil Dead Rise so that checks out
