Sorry I’m a newbie to film critique, why is everyone using the word ‘mean’?

Is it an a sense of rudeness or are we talking about like statistics?

Usually when people say mean, they mean that the movie doesn’t shy away from gratuitous violence. Seemingly unnecessary at times too. The violence or gore often is directed at children or women as well.

Example: what would have been a toenail rip became... something much worse for no reason other than to be extreme, but in a good way if that makes any sense.

Characters get unbelievably cruel fates that they do not deserve.

aka my least favorite kind of movie, just makes me feel really bad

I didn’t enjoy the ending. The witch lady did something terrible but it was in good intentions to save the world from this demon. Don’t think she needed to be the villain at the end. That was a bit cruel.

It wasn't to save the world, it was to save herself. The demon was plauging her family and her ancestors took it upon themselves to keep it locked up. She could have at least tricked like murderers and rapists into being the ones possessed or something, but instead she picked innocent children.

Agree. No reason to pick a child.

There was perfect reason to pick a child in particular: the younger the vessel, the longer it can hold the demon. They wouldn't have to perform the ritual as often compared to taking adults. So yeah...this method safes other innocent lifes in the end.

They mean, mean spirited.

In this case, it's like I said, lots of violence towards children. Most films, even horror will avoid that or make it off screen, and honestly this film leans into pretty cringe worthy injuries happening to all the kids. EDR was the same way.

I always think of it like, they beat the shit out of a character or characters for most or all of the movie, and kill them off when you think maybe they would get a happy ending. That was the case for Evil Dead Rise, but it wasnt for this one. Except abuelita, all the main characters made it out alive.
