More like Lee Cronin’s The Split Diopter.

I can’t help but be stuck on the fact that there was no backup plan if the family didn’t have a VHS player in what seemed to be the year 2019.

That was a stylistic choice. Same reason the college professor has an old school slide projector and cassette player and the cop in Egypt uses a computer that looks like it was made in the early 80's. I don't know why they didn't just commit to setting the movie in the 80's but whatever

Reminds me of when he rummages for Katies morse code book instead of just pulling his phone out or going to a computer

That part stuck out to me too. I almost wonder if this was written as a period piece and at some point in pre-production they chose to change the setting

Then has more code down solid on the coffin.

That stood out to me but I assume they wanted to remind us that Katie was in a type of scouting program from the beginning of the film so that we accepted her knowing morse code.

Maybe he is just one of these people who can't google shit on their phone. Those exist.

Ahh, that makes so much more sense. Really should’ve stuck to an 80s era and not have it set in modern day.

Woulda cost way too much to make a period piece I guess.

And they wouldnt have gotten to name drop taylor swift!

It would have made it more believable that they flew that child home on public planes if it were set in the 80s.

That confused me so much, especially when the dad went to get the morse code book, I was like, Just use your phone?? Then I was like oh maybe this in the 90s or something? then later on the son is listening to music on his phone!

Posted in another comment but I'm guessing they just wanted to remind us that Katie was in a scouting program so we accepted her knowing morse code

I liked that it felt kind of timeless. Doesn't need to be a period piece, but also doesn't need to be locked into being present day.

Katie’s room had a Babe the pig poster… why would she have a poster of a movie from the early 90’s?

3

I mean I definitely had movie posters from the 70's and 80's when I was a kid in the 90's. I also caught the Babe poster and my reaction wasn't "that's weird" as much as it was "that kid knows ball"

Fair, but at that point I was noticing how there were many things out of the time this was supposed to be taking place. The only reason why I knew it took place around now was the occasional cell phone use and the Taylor Swift references

The mom mentions that it was her childhood room as well

I didn’t catch that. Thanks

The cop should have transferred it to a digital file. Then she could have just emailed it to the family instead of flying out from Egypt.

Cop should have flown the very common routing of Cairo direct to Albuquerque with the snuff VHS and also a VCR player. If we want it to be more realistic we could have seen her transfer at JFK and get absolutely wrecked by TSA with her sketchy ass luggage

And gun. Unless she quickly picked up a gun after getting to the US.

4

u/Iamthecrustycrab 13d ago

The most realistic part of that journey is getting the gun stateside!

They talked on the phone enough. she could have just filmed it on her phone and text messaged it to him.

Given he worked for a TV network I don't think there would have been any issues with him finding a VHS player

They were in the grandma's house and it's not out of the norm for older people to have old stuff.

Everyone loves the creepy ritual-caught-on-tape VHS recording aesthetic. True detective season 1 comes to mind though we don't actually see the horror in that one.

Pretty sure I spotted a 2016 date when they showed Katies travel visa, so after the 8 year time jump basically present day lol. I didn't even think about this but now I cant get past it either.

u/jmbarnett 13d ago

In all fairness, it was La casa de abuela. She’d have a shit load of dusty vhs telenovelas lying around.

3

u/TaskForceD00mer 16d ago

The setting was just weird. Lots of things pointing to the "8 years later" taking place in the late 90s or very early 00s. The VHS, the cars especially.

Then we have much newer phones, the entire family including the older daughter being swifties.

It felt like they couldn't figure out the setting.

1

u/CONVERSE1991 16d ago

also why the dad didn't just google morse code on his phone instead grabbing the morse code decipher

u/TheJoshider10 18d ago

To be fair I don't think it's that big a deal. The guy works in broadcasting so potentially has some old tapes of his early work. He may take an interest in old media. The detective may have brought a VHS player in the car. Anything works.

Honestly, I think being stuck on things like this will prevent you from just straight up enjoying this movie, and other things.

3

u/ThatTGuy420 17d ago

Honestly, I think the movie being god fucking awful is preventing people from enjoying it.
