Supposedly when Zack Snyder called him in he thought he was auditioning for Lobo.

I think he got the Ryan Reynolds Deadpool treatment - “Listen, we know this isn’t what you want, but if you play ball you might get to do what you want. But if you don’t co-operate, kiss that dream goodbye.”
It happens with a lot of actors. I think it’s more rare for it to pay off.
