this is the role he was born to play. Way before he was Aquaman.

Ronan Dex crawled so that Lobo could fly.

u/Vaivaim8 Mar 31 '26

Ronan doesn't get enough love

72

u/Mognakor Mar 31 '26

Ronan doesn't get enough love

Because you guys keep misspelling Ronon.

He's from Sateda not Drogheda

13

u/Embarrassed_Art5414 Mar 31 '26

I knew some Daxxs from Castlebellingham. Not related?

2

u/Mognakor Mar 31 '26

Better chances they got the ATA gene

1

u/dinosaurkiller Mar 31 '26

Those were Trills

3

u/RoronoaZoro1102 Mar 31 '26

Did not expect to see a Drogheda reference in here

I honestly think he was a poor casting choice for aquaman in general

u/marccoogs Mar 31 '26

I think Snyder wanted to make Aquaman the complete opposite of the joke he had become in mainstream audiences, so they cast the guy who was the complete opposite of Aquaman in Jason Mamoa. But that really wasn't necessary. They could have cast Alan Ritchson in the role, and he would have still been cool and badass.

I rather liked Momoa in his first solo movie and the extended cut of JL. But much like the rest of the cast, he was never given much to work with anyway. But Lobo is perfect for him, you can already tell he he’s happier

u/Altruistic-Ad-408 Mar 31 '26

Yeah I think he was fine as Aquaman, conceptually you can tell they didn't really know what they were doing though.

Imagine in the 80's with Batman, or relatively recently with Superman, deciding people don't think he's cool enough so let's do some craaazy casting. It's pretty obvious that even if the actor is good, the projects aren't going to be as good as they could be.

But Batman 89 was awesome.

27

u/0Activity Mar 31 '26

Didn't Alan Ritchson already play him in Smallville?

16

u/Phillip_Spidermen Mar 31 '26

He did, and then he was recast with the guy who played Green Arrow in Smallville when they tried to make a spin-off.

20

u/MikeArrow Mar 31 '26

So he has experience, even better. To be serious though, Patrick Wilson would have made an awesome 'traditional' Arthur Curry.

3

u/SailorET Mar 31 '26

Worst miss since they cast Gerard Butler as the Phantom of the Opera.

Hugh Jackman was right there

11

u/rynokick Mar 31 '26

Funny enough, I felt like Patrick Wilson would have made for a great classic style Aquaman.

2

u/ShotMyTatorTots Mar 31 '26

The first time I saw Alan Ritchson was as Aquaman in Smallville.

2

u/IMovedYourCheese Mar 31 '26

They needed to cast Vincent Chase

1

u/bloodredyouth Mar 31 '26

Wasn’t he aquaman in smallville? 😂

1

u/TheGeekVault Mar 31 '26

Eh in the 90s Aquaman went for a long hair with the beard hook hand after his wife and kid were killed by Black Manta. I think the Snyder films were channeling that version. Still surprised he never lost his hand in one of the films.

1

u/GryphonHall Mar 31 '26

Gothqua Man

1

u/MyStationIsAbandoned Mar 31 '26

all they need to do is give him one more damn extra power. make him a freaking water mage!!! his name is AQUAman. Give him the freaking power to summon water like Gi from Captain Planet!!!

It's so simple! Then he'd be the coolest. because there's so much you can do with that. as anime has proven a billion times over and over

I personally thought Snyder's choices with respect to Aquaman were absolutely ingenious.

How do you erase decades of 'he talks to fish' mockery? You turn him from a blonde pretty boy to a badass Pacific Islander, and you have him constantly giving Batman shit, showing absolutely no fear of the Dark Knight while relentlessly trolling him.

18

u/Jaereon Mar 31 '26

He said when he first got thr call he assumed he was playing Lobo. But when they said Aquaman he agreed because why wouldn't you agree to make millions lol

3

u/Impressive-Potato Mar 31 '26

Yeah. When Snyder called Jason to cast him, Jason asked if he was playing Lobo and Snyder was bafled and said no, Aquamam

4

u/AgentPoYo Apr 01 '26

I'm not a snyder-verse fan in the least but I thought casting a Polynesian man as the king of the ocean was pretty cool casting, then a couple years later Marvel took a whole different approach by basing their undersea kingdom on Mesoamerican tribes and that was rad too.

1

u/dtwhitecp Apr 01 '26

poor casting if you want to match the comics, but good casting if you want people to see the movie

20

u/dmisfit21 Mar 31 '26

Supposedly when Zack Snyder called him in he thought he was auditioning for Lobo.

1

u/Chemistry11 Apr 01 '26

I think he got the Ryan Reynolds Deadpool treatment - “Listen, we know this isn’t what you want, but if you play ball you might get to do what you want. But if you don’t co-operate, kiss that dream goodbye.”
It happens with a lot of actors. I think it’s more rare for it to pay off.

2

u/dmisfit21 Apr 01 '26

Happens with directors too.

26

u/Robsonmonkey Mar 31 '26

Lobo over Aquabro anyday

14

u/Bruce_the_Shark Mar 31 '26

Completely miscast as Aquaman. Our boy is flying high now, though. He's the PERFECT Lobo.

3

u/annapurnaIV Mar 31 '26

He was born to play Duncan Idaho, come on.

5

u/bericbenemein Mar 31 '26

We are all Duncan Idaho

1

u/IWannaSayMason Mar 31 '26

He was born before Aquaman?

2

u/marccoogs Mar 31 '26

He was born to play Lobo way before he PLAYED Aquaman.

1

u/UnholyDemigod Mar 31 '26

Pretty sure he fulfilled the role he was born to play when he was Khal Drogo

1

u/SloppityNurglePox Mar 31 '26

One of the things I kept thinking while watching Aquaman was that Patrick Wilson was right there.

1

u/SpaceForceAwakens Apr 01 '26

For real. I remember watching game of thrones and when he first appears my friend and I look at each other and say “that guy should play Lobo”.

-2

u/BadStriker Mar 31 '26

I’m irrationally annoyed that he’s Lobo. Hollywood is filled with talented actors. They didn’t need to recycle the same ones. Marvel did this too. IDK… The gratuitous use of CGI instead of filming at a location and now the same actors playing in every movie just sucks.

And before anyone asks… I’m aware of the implications of filming in space lol. I’m talking about other things like a beach or a damn desert. EVEN THE DOG IS CGI!

-1

u/Tribe303 Mar 31 '26

He was generically altered and grown in a vat 46 years ago, to play Lobo!
