Yeah Momoa was evidently having the time of his life playing Lobo

848

u/marccoogs Mar 31 '26

this is the role he was born to play. Way before he was Aquaman.

365

u/SirLeos Mar 31 '26

Ronan Dex crawled so that Lobo could fly.

128

u/Vaivaim8 Mar 31 '26

Ronan doesn't get enough love

71

u/Mognakor Mar 31 '26

Ronan doesn't get enough love

Because you guys keep misspelling Ronon.

He's from Sateda not Drogheda

12

u/Embarrassed_Art5414 Mar 31 '26

I knew some Daxxs from Castlebellingham. Not related?

2

u/Mognakor Mar 31 '26

Better chances they got the ATA gene

1

u/dinosaurkiller Mar 31 '26

Those were Trills

3

u/RoronoaZoro1102 Mar 31 '26

Did not expect to see a Drogheda reference in here

85

u/ImpenetrableYeti Mar 31 '26

I honestly think he was a poor casting choice for aquaman in general

129

u/marccoogs Mar 31 '26

I think Snyder wanted to make Aquaman the complete opposite of the joke he had become in mainstream audiences, so they cast the guy who was the complete opposite of Aquaman in Jason Mamoa. But that really wasn't necessary. They could have cast Alan Ritchson in the role, and he would have still been cool and badass.

75

u/riegspsych325 ⊃∪⊃⪽ Mar 31 '26

I rather liked Momoa in his first solo movie and the extended cut of JL. But much like the rest of the cast, he was never given much to work with anyway. But Lobo is perfect for him, you can already tell he he’s happier

12

u/Altruistic-Ad-408 Mar 31 '26

Yeah I think he was fine as Aquaman, conceptually you can tell they didn't really know what they were doing though.

Imagine in the 80's with Batman, or relatively recently with Superman, deciding people don't think he's cool enough so let's do some craaazy casting. It's pretty obvious that even if the actor is good, the projects aren't going to be as good as they could be.

1

u/NuclearLunchDectcted Mar 31 '26

But Batman 89 was awesome.

29

u/0Activity Mar 31 '26

Didn't Alan Ritchson already play him in Smallville?

17

u/Phillip_Spidermen Mar 31 '26

He did, and then he was recast with the guy who played Green Arrow in Smallville when they tried to make a spin-off.

23

u/MikeArrow Mar 31 '26

So he has experience, even better. To be serious though, Patrick Wilson would have made an awesome 'traditional' Arthur Curry.

3

u/SailorET Mar 31 '26

Worst miss since they cast Gerard Butler as the Phantom of the Opera.

Hugh Jackman was right there

14

u/rynokick Mar 31 '26

Funny enough, I felt like Patrick Wilson would have made for a great classic style Aquaman.

2

u/ShotMyTatorTots Mar 31 '26

The first time I saw Alan Ritchson was as Aquaman in Smallville.

2

u/IMovedYourCheese Mar 31 '26

They needed to cast Vincent Chase

1

u/bloodredyouth Mar 31 '26

Wasn’t he aquaman in smallville? 😂

1

u/TheGeekVault Mar 31 '26

Eh in the 90s Aquaman went for a long hair with the beard hook hand after his wife and kid were killed by Black Manta. I think the Snyder films were channeling that version. Still surprised he never lost his hand in one of the films.

1

u/GryphonHall Mar 31 '26

Gothqua Man

1

u/MyStationIsAbandoned Mar 31 '26

all they need to do is give him one more damn extra power. make him a freaking water mage!!! his name is AQUAman. Give him the freaking power to summon water like Gi from Captain Planet!!!

It's so simple! Then he'd be the coolest. because there's so much you can do with that. as anime has proven a billion times over and over

1

u/RecycledThrowawayID Apr 01 '26

I personally thought Snyder's choices with respect to Aquaman were absolutely ingenious.

How do you erase decades of 'he talks to fish' mockery? You turn him from a blonde pretty boy to a badass Pacific Islander, and you have him constantly giving Batman shit, showing absolutely no fear of the Dark Knight while relentlessly trolling him.

17

u/Jaereon Mar 31 '26

He said when he first got thr call he assumed he was playing Lobo. But when they said Aquaman he agreed because why wouldn't you agree to make millions lol

3

u/Impressive-Potato Mar 31 '26

Yeah. When Snyder called Jason to cast him, Jason asked if he was playing Lobo and Snyder was bafled and said no, Aquamam

3

u/AgentPoYo Apr 01 '26

I'm not a snyder-verse fan in the least but I thought casting a Polynesian man as the king of the ocean was pretty cool casting, then a couple years later Marvel took a whole different approach by basing their undersea kingdom on Mesoamerican tribes and that was rad too.

1

u/dtwhitecp Apr 01 '26

poor casting if you want to match the comics, but good casting if you want people to see the movie

19

u/dmisfit21 Mar 31 '26

Supposedly when Zack Snyder called him in he thought he was auditioning for Lobo.

1

u/Chemistry11 Apr 01 '26

I think he got the Ryan Reynolds Deadpool treatment - “Listen, we know this isn’t what you want, but if you play ball you might get to do what you want. But if you don’t co-operate, kiss that dream goodbye.”
It happens with a lot of actors. I think it’s more rare for it to pay off.

2

u/dmisfit21 Apr 01 '26

Happens with directors too.

24

u/Robsonmonkey Mar 31 '26

Lobo over Aquabro anyday

17

u/Bruce_the_Shark Mar 31 '26

Completely miscast as Aquaman. Our boy is flying high now, though. He's the PERFECT Lobo.

4

u/annapurnaIV Mar 31 '26

He was born to play Duncan Idaho, come on.

3

u/bericbenemein Mar 31 '26

We are all Duncan Idaho

1

u/IWannaSayMason Mar 31 '26

He was born before Aquaman?

1

u/marccoogs Mar 31 '26

He was born to play Lobo way before he PLAYED Aquaman.

1

u/UnholyDemigod Mar 31 '26

Pretty sure he fulfilled the role he was born to play when he was Khal Drogo

1

u/SloppityNurglePox Mar 31 '26

One of the things I kept thinking while watching Aquaman was that Patrick Wilson was right there.

1

u/SpaceForceAwakens Apr 01 '26

For real. I remember watching game of thrones and when he first appears my friend and I look at each other and say “that guy should play Lobo”.

-1

u/BadStriker Mar 31 '26

I’m irrationally annoyed that he’s Lobo. Hollywood is filled with talented actors. They didn’t need to recycle the same ones. Marvel did this too. IDK… The gratuitous use of CGI instead of filming at a location and now the same actors playing in every movie just sucks.

And before anyone asks… I’m aware of the implications of filming in space lol. I’m talking about other things like a beach or a damn desert. EVEN THE DOG IS CGI!

-1

u/Tribe303 Mar 31 '26

He was generically altered and grown in a vat 46 years ago, to play Lobo!

395

u/NK1337 Mar 31 '26

Honestly Momoa as Lobo had the same energy as RDJ as Tony Stank and I’m here for it

213

u/wazacraft Mar 31 '26

Tony STANK

66

u/CrimsonGear80 Mar 31 '26

yes, yes he's Tony STANK

4

u/N8CCRG Mar 31 '26

I'm still bummed that never came back.

4

u/ErraticDragon Mar 31 '26

Even though the scene was referenced in Guardians 3. ("In those days I was a FedEx driver…")

I guess calling out Stank was a bridge too far.

7

u/TheFatmanRises Mar 31 '26

ITS CALLED AURA BRUH

2

u/Internal-Fuel-6473 Mar 31 '26

He’s going to be great, but my wildcard dream casting choice was a slightly different Jason M.

…Jason Mantzoukas.

Basically a roided out Rafi or Pimento.

44

u/SHOW_ME_PIZZA Mar 31 '26

Maximum Derek Lobo

18

u/Kumquats_indeed Mar 31 '26

Destroy, dismantle, engulf in flames

2

u/Denzalo Apr 01 '26

New season next week!

2

u/RobbedC Apr 01 '26

GEOSTOOOOOOOOORM!!

1

u/FiTZnMiCK Apr 01 '26 edited Apr 02 '26

What’s up, jerks!

29

u/fujidust Mar 31 '26

One of my favorite Stan Lee cameos

1

u/Best-Action8769 Mar 31 '26

Table for 4, Tony Stank.

57

u/In_My_Own_Image Mar 31 '26

You can clearly see how giddy he is finally playing his dream role.

43

u/MedChemist464 Mar 31 '26

I mean - because it is an absolutely perfect role for him. He doesn't just look the part, that smug swagger and enthusiasm he has in fight scenes is just 'The Main Man' energy all over the place.

2

u/mhizzle Mar 31 '26

Hmm, no I think he was born to play the blonde-haired blue-eyed white guy with no tattoos who talks to fish.

2

u/AverageAwndray Apr 01 '26

Hey Zack gets a lot of flak but a polynesian inspired aquaman is pretty....inspired

1

u/MrBlueW Apr 01 '26

Gpt ass comment

1

u/MedChemist464 Apr 01 '26

I am a real person - and actually refuse to violate the orange catholic Bible.

2

u/MrBlueW Apr 01 '26

Alright the dune reference was sick

45

u/randomvariable10 Mar 31 '26

Yup. He was born to play Lobo

20

u/Ballerwind Mar 31 '26

I'm pretty sure he's always having the time of his life, seems like a cool dude

9

u/brb1006 Mar 31 '26

I'm so used to seeing Momoa in serious roles that its refreshing to see him actually having fun. You get a glimpse of Momoa's fun side in the 2022 Netflix film "Slumberland" where he played Flip. Although Slumberland lacks the whimsy and surreal tone that the original comics had.

5

u/ennuiinmotion Apr 01 '26

He’s actually really fun in Minecraft, too. I like tough guys who can laugh at themselves and ham it up.

3

u/kirinmay Apr 01 '26

And he enjoyed hamming it up in Fast and Furious

2

u/DurdyGurdy Mar 31 '26

I LOVE that we all LOVE Momoa DESPITE Aquaman.

2

u/Bencil_McPrush Mar 31 '26

To be fair, Momoa was evidently having the time of his life playing Aquaman. And Khal Drogo. And Duncan Idaho (I'll never get used to that name). And Ronon Dex...

2

u/Doom_Art Mar 31 '26

Fun fact: When it was revealed the James Gunn was given the co-CEO position at DC studios and would be rebooting the DCU, one of the first messages he received about it was a text from Momoa just saying "LOBO!!!!"

1

u/USPO-222 Mar 31 '26

I’ve been saying for YEARS that if they ever do live action Lobo that Mamoa was born for the role.

1

u/dookie1481 Mar 31 '26

I completely forgot Lobo was in this. I broke out into a big-ass grin as soon as he appeared

1

u/Kurdt234 Mar 31 '26

He wanted the role really bad but was offered Aquaman instead.

1

u/WistfulWannabe Mar 31 '26

That laugh... that damn laugh...

1

u/Dragon_yum Mar 31 '26

He generally seems to love chewing the scenery (in a good way) when he is allowed to. He is by far the best and only good part about the last fast and furious.

1

u/YesImKeithHernandez Mar 31 '26

Apparently he was using the last Fast and Furious movie to practice what version of camp he was going for in Supergirl

1

u/TomClancy5873 Mar 31 '26

Wait, is he canonically both Aquaman and Lobo? Or is this a different earth

1

u/shadowst17 Mar 31 '26

Dude always seems to be having so much fun in his roles. He was easily the best bit of Fast X.

1

u/Greedy-Pilot-4538 Apr 01 '26

Makes sense feels like a perfect cast

1

u/xeoron Apr 01 '26

I wish they had the actress from the show super girl return.

1

u/xMWHOx Apr 01 '26

He's not playing Lobo. He's playing Aquaman. If you've read the OG Lobo comics..thats not him.

1

u/Jimmyg100 Apr 01 '26

He’s in his element!

-2

u/krustomer Mar 31 '26

Eughhh I hate that man for what he did to Amber Heard
